couldn't the interviewer have been setting pinter up for that response? that art and political issues should go hand in hand and are in fact unavoidable, rather than the opinion that many people hold that art should be purely aesthetic? they do speak of america's alliance with israel in an extremely critical way
Annoying interviewer who frankly couldn't give a damn about the lives that have been lost in the conflicts in the middle east. He just keeps cutting across a man who speaks about the plight of others whilst suffering from throat cancer. Wears his lovely suit with his silk hankie, he doesn't give a shit at all if children have no legs in Gaza.
@rey5000 I'll give you an example, one of the interviewer's questions was whether Harold Pinter's activism will taint the purity of his work. Like there is something dirtying about standing up for human rights, standing up against atrocities committed on our behalf. Like it dirties your shirt & hands more than it does for the men who commit the war crimes themselves. And this is from Al Jazeera. It shocked me. I thought they loved anything remotely anti-america, regardless of the cause.
He is dead. Good riddance (politically). He is a classic left-wing racist. Anything against the capitalist west is good. He has supported all the opportunistic dictators in the past. He did not care about the combodjan or serbian peoples etc. That is racist. That Chaves and Morales is doing the same thing as the arabs: blaming their misfortunes at the USA is just pathetic. It will not get them anywhere. Everybody is responsible for their own country. Soon Chomsky is dead too. The last madman.
People do not realize that Harold Pinter was Jewish and heartily condemned Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine and Israel's current brutal treatment of Gaza. Pinter was one of 105 prominent Jews who signed a We're not celebrating Israel's Anniversary petition in April of 2008.
The final paragraph of this petition reads as follows " We cannot celebrate the birthday of a state founded on terrorism, massacres and the dispossession of another people from their land.
Harold Pinter was a noble genius who bravely exposed the filthy, imperial, mass-murdering activities of the Bushco gang, whose revolting British collaborator, Blair the poodle, is, amazingly in a world of cruel ironies, now running around as a "peace" ambassador for the U.N.!
Pinter helps keep the hope for civilization alive in a world infested with abysmal evil as represented by immoral, cowardly killers as the chimp and the poodle.

I don't understand how you can say Pinter is a great author. Apart from saying all human beings are at each others throats what do we learn from his work about human nature?
I found The Homecoming tedious and Celebration downright bad.
He's a misanthropist at heart. Humanity is more complex than he would admit.
If anyone can say how he's on the same level as Chekov, Ibsen, O Neal I'd really like to know.
I used to share a similar opinion of Pinter's work. Nothing I say here could convince you to value that which he has written; but I can say I used to be in your boat. If you want to recognise the worth of his work, you'll find it. If you don't want to, you won't.
I also think it is wholly unfair of you to believe Pinter has a limited view on humanity. I have read and seen much of Pinter's work, as well as paid attention to interviews such as this one; I've read his essays and his poetry. I find very little evidence to the fact that he's a misanthrope with a limited world-view. I find the exact opposite, in fact.
One last thing: I've studied theatre for a majority of my life, and I have a deep respect for all three of the playwrights you mentioned. Pinter, however, is none of them, nor was he meant to be them. He didn't even try to be them. As long as you concentrate on how Pinter is not like Ibsen, you will never fully realise the various scope and uses possible with theatre.
Please don't be guilty of the myopia you've so erroneously ascribed to Pinter.
It's a shame about the cancer certainly, but his voice has become more dominating, and it's really quite a wonderful sound, though i would never wish cancer on anybody, especially not Pinter.
Harold Pinter is a genius, easily my favorite writer and as trite as it is to label people "heroes" or "idols" I'd have to say that Pinter comes closest to fitting that description for me
Excellent work. What's going to be the age of Al-Jazeera English Network before its shot by the alliance of the Lord Protectors of the ''corporate controlled media''?
