Again, this is a bit pedestrian! Can't understand why he didn't play more at the heel in this mvt. Slow vibrato is definitely not for this mvt!! Tempo is ok, Primrose took liberties and went against Walton's wishes. But each phrase should show the bassoon qualities that are stronger with viola than the oboe crispiness of the violin. Walton understood the viola!! But the vivacity he wanted is not brought out too well in this rendition. Hammered strokes, "au talon" & brisk vibrato should help!!!
personally I feel he did it so that the viola projects more! I think it's an awesome idea. some critics say the concerto is weak because the viola is often overwhelmed by the rest of the orchestra. PROBLEM SOLVED :DDDD
I agree, I have seen a lot of colleagues sliding/bleeding playing this piece, The I and II Mov are great but the III mov, Walton run out of fuel, there was no viagra at that time...definitively we have better challenging pieces where we can outchallenge the challenge and make it a great musical performance...
that's a very crappy piece, very difficult and wicth a very low musical value. I have to study the piano reduction and it is sooo much waste of time...expecially i see that even the orchestras have great problem in playing in the "right" (i mean written by the composer) tempo. this video is an exaple of how difficult is to keep the rithm and how little music you get from it...
It's poorly played, yes, but it is one of the greatest pieces ever written for viola. So if you can't understand the music, keep your comments to yourself.
@ratoci Concertos are supposed to be difficult. Musically wise it has a large range of expression throughout its movements with varied harmonies. There are plenty of good recordings of this work so it's really not that hard for a good orchestra to play this. Perhaps you don't like Walton's style, but to say low musical value is simply off the mark.
@ShadowTheHedgehog423 Primrose wanted to push the technical limits of the instrument to gain respect in its own right. Point of making it harder is to push the bar and show that violists are not simply 2nd rate violinists.

I don't see the point in making music harder.

Good job! and it should be very difficult to play with a viola of your size! it seems to be at least 43 cm. long...

This changes where made by William Primrose and Walton conducted the recording with the changes.

Why are a lot of the parts in a higher octave?
cyvue 3 years ago
Because it's challenging for the player. The main point of a concerto is to be challenging.
ThaSchwab 3 years ago
What? Aren't there any changes for musical purposes?
ShadowTheHedgehog423 3 years ago
Why would there? Sure, maybe if the viola is doubling a higher part, but that's really the only time.
