  • My 2003 Dodge Neon is doing the exact same thing. Its making the exact sme sound as the car in this video. Have changed the cam shaft sensor, the spark plugs and wires, the coil pack, ruled out the catalytic converter, fuel injectors, and fuel pump. Do you think its the crank shaft? What is your opinion?

  • @BrittyBoo0704 I presume the car is not starting.Do you have spark at the plugs if so what happens when you spray starting fluid into the engine.

  • @richpin06a I'm sitting here with my husband and read off what you just sent. Without my knowledge, he messaged you this morning haha. His username is jimbz19 so if you got something, its from him. We did spray starting fluid, but it did nothing. And yes, the car cranks, just doesn't turn over. We are getting spark and fuel.

  • Hey!!!! It's Ray Romano!

  • could a cam/crank position sensor cause the starter to turn differently? I just put a new starter in that is tested good, and a good battery, and the starter don't turn as fast as it should, I previously had a loud bang under the hood when I tried to start it. I suspect timing issues, 96 caddy 4.6 ns 3 time chains made of steel and I was not driving at the time so I don't think there broke, but who knows. help

  • @MrDanimul6 Sounds like you could have a possible bad cam sensor.

  • wow, I did not think it would cause starter crank issues, dam

  • does a 1994 camaro v6 crank pos sensor read the same ohms as the car u working on if it is ok. or are the ohms readings diferent on every crank sensor?

  • @quentinqep I believe they are different.

  • @richpin06a thanks i try to pull codes with a actron scanner and no codes engine is backfireing bad and wont start. it has good fuel presure but wont start but sometimes will run when it wonts that is how i know it has not jumped timing im stumped thanks

  • @quentinqep Almost sounds like the spark plug wires are on the wrong plugs.

  • @richpin06a when it starts runs great. thats what is weird to me

  • @quentinqep possible ignition module ?

  • @quentinqep check for vaccum leaks maybe you have a cracked or loose vacc line or a leaky intake manifold gasket. just a little bit of extra air will cause a lean running condition which in turn causes backfiring

  • Loving the Billy Joel in the background!

  • When you are probing the pink wire to get a 12V reading, where is the other probe of the multimeter connected to ? Is it to the negative terminal of the battery ?

  • @opsvideo2008 Yes....actually i had it clipped to a metal part of the engine same thing.

  • next time shut the f...ng music off...

  • You sound like Peter Griffenth. No offence.

  • @MrJunkProductions That's cool

  • rich i remove # 1 and # 4 wires from the distributor rigth same for a 6cyl remove 1 and 6?

  • @hp11208 I don't think i understand.

  • @richpin06a u said # 1 and # 4 to pull off from the distributor cap or from the engine block

  • @hp11208 is it a V6 or a straight six? depends on the motor...

  • Use a GUTTMAN or KTS

  • Sir, I have 2 Saturns. 1996SL1 and 2001 L200.Both stopped running. I am starting with Crank position sensors. Took them both out-they are different looking. Are they supposed to have same parameters?I.E. 700-900 Ohms? I am assuming I check between the pins -not from pin to outside. My 1996 has no resistance-like if there is short. I actually went to two different stores(O-Railley and Auto Zone) and checked brand new sensors in store and they both had no resistance at all.The L200 is same.

  • @sonofsun4 I am not sure what the specs are on the L200 but on the SL pin to pin is 700-900 like my meter showed in the video.

  • Hey Richpin Do you know if a low impedance meter can be used to do these tests or does it have to be high impedance meter. Great videos by the way.

  • @SKFishAssassin Not sure all my tests for the last 20 years or so have been with the high impedance meter.

  • Richpin how do I connect the wires near the end of the video to the cps to test your last part of the video. I pulled #1 & 4 no spark, Pulled plug and checked pink wire low voltage and dropping as car was turning over. Like battery was dieing. checked battery but got 12.86 volts.

  • @csranch2000 Go to the wrecking yard and remove the connector from the cps and extend the wires like i did then you can check it.

  • when testing for voltage, where does the black test lead go?

  • @whoiiuhz Any ground

  • What if I have .8v on the pink wire on the ignition control modual plug? I see you have 12v.. what could cause the low voltage? short i guess? any ideas? thanks.

  • @fsitemstore It could be a bad cps. What you could do is replace it now or wait till it acts up and test for spark.

  • richpin, great videos, i will subscribe. Can crankshaft position sensor or camshaft position sensor be the cause of no start if I am able to get the car to start by spraying starter fuel into the intake? I think it is a fuel issue. No power to fuel injectors The engine control relay only closes intermittently when I turn key on.

  • @Prophet2525 It sounds like a possible bad sensor if you are not getting any voltage at the injectors when you are cranking the engine over. Have you checked for trouble codes in the computer.

  • scotty i have a 96 ford explorer it starts runs a lil then slutters and shut down sometimes it backfires also what u think is wrong with it

  • richpin06A - if its possible could you do a diagnostic test on a tps sensor?!!!1 You have the best videos.!!!1 Thanks for the tips!!!!!!1

  • @atoxx1 I will put that on my list.

  • @atoxx1 Thanx!!!!1

  • I just wanted to let you know that everything is now good; we are up and running; LOTS of thanks to you!!! I never would have figured it out and my husband says thank you so very much. He was stumped and he is usvually ery good at knowing what is wrong and what needs fixing. He is a super handy-man. LOL! My fan kicks on at 1/2 to 3/4 way on the temperature guage. Thank you so very much for everything!!! You are a Godsend!!!

  • What was the problem?

  • @richpin06a still hve not found source of problem. also changed the IAP sensor and cleaned out throttle housing. It was filled with oil and gunk. Any new ideas. Still only starts when it is cold, have to hold gas pedal all the way down to start when engine is warm, and has a high to low idle.

  • Just replaced the coolant temperature sensor also and still no change. What else do I need to try?

  • I was wrong. The fuel filter and coolant temperature sensor must have worked. It is now starting everytime. However, I now got another question. When I replaced the coolant sensor some antifreeze leaked out. I put more in when the vehicle was running. When I went to take it out for a test drive, about thirty minutes, it started to leak antifreeze, smoke, and overheat. Could this be due to me using more antiffreeze than needed or maybe the sensor is not in correctly.

  • Comment removed

  • Just replaced the fuel filter moments ago and no change.

  • Sorry had to leave for a few. But yes, when I turn the key, the fuel pump whirrs for just a few seconds.

  • Here is the best I can describe it. When I put the key in to start the car, it turns over but instead of starting, it gets to the point of where it should start and it suddenly dies. White smoke comes out of the exhaust, and no matter how hard I try it just will not crank over enough to start. If I leave it sit for an hour or so it will start right up once and no more until it cools down again.

  • You have spark and fuel but it will not run. What was it running like before this problem. Some times you can have spark and fuel and the engine will not run because the catalytic converter is plugged. That is easy to check by seeing if it will run wih the o2 sensor removed. But you say when its cold it will run but when hot it will not. That is a classic bad CPS symptom.

  • @richpin06a hi buddy my car wont start it is a diesil 6.8ltr v8 and when i turn it over all i get is a whirring from my starter moter so i striped down the starter and rebuilt it put it in and same thing just quiter then i put it in my girlfriendws car and it worked the car was working before the winter so what do u think thanks

  • As far as I can tell anyway. The car is unable to start 99% of the time and when I tested the spark plugs and wires, I got a spark off both. Pulled the plugs and they are getting spark.

  • Richpin I REALLY need your help. I just bought a 1995 Saturn sl2. It is doing the exact same thing the Saturn in this video, you are testing, is doing. I cannot get it to start unless the engine is cold. It stalls out when it does start after a few minutes. I am getting gas and a spark. I have checked all the sensors with an OHM meter and checked the spark plugs as well.

  • Are you checking for spark when you can not get it to run.

  • We have checked for a spark on both the CKP and also on the sparkplugs themselves. What about a bad fuel filter? Could that be the problem?

  • Let me understand you correctly when it does not start you are getting spark at the plugs...correct.

  • yes

  • Ok,Can you hear the pump run when you turn the key to the run position.

It is only on for 2-3 seconds.

  • nice work ,question ? why set the meter on ac scale ? not dc ? thanks

  • @garcon98

This type of sensors are inductive sensors. The output signal approximate a sine wave, for this reason not dc.

  • thank you libmaj for the answer ,,,

  • This is one of the ways but not good enough.A meter is not a good way to test ckp because is not fast enough to capture data. .while checking for ground the best way to check ground wire and ground is to check it with load in this case while vehicle cranking or starting which is the best way. Ohming is one of the ways but doig a voltage drop is more accurate because you are putting a load and verifying it.

  • What do you do when the problem isn't the sensor itself, but the wiring harness going into the sensor has a broken wire flush with the connector that goes into the sensor and there's no possibility of splicing ends together? I've checked around and can't find a replacement harness. I guess I'll have to drive 50 miles to the nearest junk yard.

  • Junk yard is the best way to go.

  • How do I make the' long wire spare connector' like you use in this vid? I'm going to the j/yard and don't really want to climb underneath. Can I cut off a connector off some other part of the car?

  • I went to a' you pick it' yards and found a car with the cylinder head removed, very easy

  • Ok so when you test the ground it should show 0? Mine is showing 7, what does this mean?

  • Richpin is a genius, best auto mechanic i have come across in years. He aint no "parts changer" He is an AAA mechanical genius. 3 different shops could not figure out why my olds kept dying whenever it wanted to. This VID on the crank sensor helped me fix this damn GM POS.

RICHPIN is the BEST, thank you brother.....

  • your average autoshop doesn't want to save you money, if you turn to them they're interested in presenting a dire scenario to you and bring you the only option that is profitable to them - its interested in REPLACEMENT not preventative maintenance, because REPLACEMENT = charge for new parts and INSTALLATION LABOR. I had a problem with my door it made popping sound, shop wanted to charge me 400 dollars. I went to home depot got a bolt and fixed it myself. They wanted to weld!

  • the bolt was less than a dollar!

  • What exactly does the crankshaft position sensor do? Control ignition based on the position of the crankshaft?

  • Yes,it defines the engine position to the PCM so it can control ignition and fuel delivery.
