this is beautiful, thanks for posting. Can anyone enlighten me on the history of this song and how this song is related to Silver Dagger and which song was first etc.? Thanks.
As I was a child of the 60's with all of their very high and very low points, I cherish the idea that PP&M was likely the best of the 20th century. They are forever in my memory!
With YouTube, it is possible to search out a singer, a band's, a group's catalog in ways that are not possible in any other way. And, so, I stumble upon this utterly beautiful gem...past the repeated listenings of their better known songs (which are, in themselves, quite beautiful). But, this one....wow.
@Doleafol yeah thats the great thing about youtube.wed never hear any of these songs otherwise unless someone recommended them or had the album.the internet is great that way.
This is simply wonderful; I've woken up to yet another day of struggle and toil; getting through work and trying to make the most of life with all of its challenges; I put this song on, and as I sit here listening here to Mary's deep, tranquillising voice and the melody, it makes feel lighter and happier.
Isn`t this one of / in Sir Francis Childs collection of older anglo-american-irish ballads, but what number I can`t for my life think of right now....(Child # ?)
-Mary Travers......there aren`t words....SHE`s simply magnificent and so beautiful !!!
There`s another favorite of mine....`The fist time ever I saw your face`, makes me think of when/how I first met my .....the LOVE of my life.....
I do not know whether this is among the Sir Francis Child's collection but you have piqued my interest and I will look that up. Many American folk songs have histories to the long past as I have found a few in volume 1 of the Oxford Anthology of British Literature which is a huge collection I have, 2500 pages for just the first volume. I will take a look ! Thanks. ~~~
I here this song and I think of the wonderful woman who has been in my life for thirty four years. And even though I have had hardships, they pale compared to the happiness she has given me.
I've always loved Peter, Paul and Mary. This group showed how harmonies should be done. What a beautiful song this is; it's so haunting. Although Mary might be gone, her legacy lives on with her music.
This song is one of the first I heard Mary sing, in 1963 or thereabouts, when the stars were still visible at night. That time has gone, as has Mary. Man, you were great! Your voice was voluminous by the time of your passing, and we have so many songs of yours to store in our hearts until we see you again, on a stage in the beyond. Thank you for giving us your short time here.
As soon as I heard last night, your voice went through my soul - "I wish I were a tiny sparrow - and I had wings - and I could fly ... " You're flying now, Mary.
I love this song...When I was 10 (I'm 56) I bought the album with this song on it....would play it over and over....very deep for a 10 year old girl.....looking back...I should have locked my heart in a box of golden and not have courted...

This is such a beautiful song about the sadness of love. Just as true when you're old as when you're young.

I first heard this song as a young girl. i loved it then. and i still do. Mary nailed it but then she always was perfection.

One of Mary Travers finest moments,
it's so hard to believe that such a wonderful person has left us :-(
the world will be a much sadder place knowing that she's no longer here, but a more beautiful place because of what she did while she was here
Here's to you Mrs Travers, until we meet again... rest in peace :-)
1990AaronC 2 years ago 11
That was all very well said.
The world is sadder because she is not here, but more beautiful because of what she did.
Thank you for your thoughts.

@1990AaronC We'll all meet again. Mary is young and beautiful again waiting to sing her friends home.

Mary's voice so beautiful and strong.
Just a lovely, lovely voice in this sad and mournful song.
Mary, may you always sing with the tiny sparrows and all the angels in heaven.
You will be missed by many, many fans all over the world.

So nice to have this sweet, sad song to hear on YouTube, having just heard that Mary has died.
