Who in there right mind would spend that sort of cash on a old banger 202? But i love it! Its unique, tuff,an powerful, an most of all an old commodore nice car bud!!!
Fuel economy won't be a strong point though. Would i have to change the valve seats to suit E85 as if i was converting a red 202 from leaded to unleaded?
Theres 3 benefits: better power due to the higher octane rating. Its environmentally friendlier, so it will keep the tree-huggers happy. And it will be alot more difficult for the boys in blue to put me off the road for bad emissions.
It certainly is an awesome machine. E85 is available at several servos in major cities, but to run it you will have t ensure that you have hoses, pumps and other seals etc capable of using it. Ethanol is corrosive, and in high concentrations, this will destroy rubber and metal not rated for it's use.
I dont think i'll use a giant cam. i'll use a blower to get power, maybe twin paxton novi-1200 blowers for something different. There was a plymouth cuda featured in street machine a few years back, and it had those exact blowers.
Any 500HP V8 that's naturally aspirated won't be the best to drive on the street. Lumpy cam etc. Not for a daily driver anyway. Fun for a weekend toy though!
im thinking of buying a Gemini panelvan, getting an old blue 308 block & putting an injected 5ltr top end on it to avoid putting too much pollution gear on it. im planning to get 500hp out of it, manualised close-ratio T700, 9in, 35 spline axles & 4-link rear suspension. do you think that'll be a good combination? and would i have to get a new chassis made to suit or should i modify the standard chassis to get it to handle 500hp?
Yeah I will upload some more. I'll do an in-car vid or something. Missed out on racing at Calder a few weeks back (they turned people away!), so hopefully I'll get to run in early feb when it reopens. I'll do some videos of the runs.
Just 1 minor problem with the forums as far as registration goes. I have to type in a code in order to submit, but theres no code down the bottom. Is it the forums or is it because im trying to register on the net via my mobile phone?
Very nice work mate. just wondering what max boost psi you will run? I'm running 8psi (see my vid) with 8.3:1 static comp. this is pushing 12.8:1 full boost, just on the limit of 98ulp + prostrength octane booster. if i went to 10 or 12 psi, I'd need avgas. look forward to see it finished.
Car's pretty much finished. I'm planning on running about 20 psi, which should see me over the 300rwkW mark. Last dyno run (see my other videos) I had a faulty boost controller and could only get 14 psi, but still managed 244rwkW on pump fuel (98).
Check out my mate's SC14 supercharged EFI intercooled 202 VK (search for Wrayza). He made 146rwkW on 6 psi on a stock engine last dyno run. He's yet to go back with his new pulley, running 10-12. Should see him do more than 200rwkW I'd think.
my old man tells me that the blue holden carby 6s have air injection, which holds them back, performance wise, and fuel economy, which is why i wanna convert a red 6 to fuel injection. if i convert a red 6 to fuel injection, will i have to put any pollution components on it?
Generally, you can't put an older engine into a later model vehicle without engineering certificates etc. All engine changes are required to meet the emissions standards of the vehicle from which the engine came out, or the vehicle it is going in to, which ever is newer. Therefore, legally, if you were to put a red motor into say a VK, the motor would have to have all the same emissions gear that the VK had from factory. You would also probably need to have this tested by the EPA.
The VK EFI manidold won't bolt up to a 9 port red head really. Why don't you just remove the air injection from the blue motor (techically not legal, but who's really going to know?), or better yet, convert the blue motor to EFI. Blue/blacks are much better than the reds in regards to internal strength. The factor holden them back is they can't breathe. Fix that, and you'll have a very different engine.
reused the block. just bored it to 40 thou. The old engine still ran fine, just had the fuel in the sump issue. Most likely that was causes by a short in the injector wiring (two wires touching on the top of the plug), dumping fuel in constantly, and the rings were a bit worn. Care factor zero now hehe. New engine has done 450km. I'll post up a vid shortly
have ya got a 202 holden 6 lying around that u dont want, mate? if u got a red 202 lying around i'll give u $100 for it. i went to pick-a-part in campbellfield yesterday and there were shitloads of 202s, but i had no luck there either, as some of them were in shit condition, or they were missing the manifold or the head.
Nearly there. Everything is back on/in the car and the boot install is done. I decided to build another engine, so that will be ready next week. It's just a matter of dropping it in and away we go. New motor is a full house build, forgies, different cam, everything imaginable hehe. Should pump out some VERY serious numbers. I'll post a video up of the new engine startup.
Im in the process of tracking down a 202 red motor (in good condition, and with all the parts intact), and i wish to convert it to fuel injection. if i do end up having a go at doing the conversion, can ya tell me what components i need, how much might it cost and what problems will i run into during the process??
The EFI manifold won't fit on the red heads, as it's designed for a blue/black 12 port head, not the 9 port like the reds. Either start with a blue/black motor, or modify the red block to accept a blue/black head.
It's not too hard to do, but if you're planning on doing anything like turbo, don't waste your time with the stock management system. It's analogue, not programmable and pretty useless for modified engines (more than a cam and stuff). Get an aftermarket management system. You will still need most of the stock parts though, bar the airflow meter and computer.
You should be able to get all the stuff from the wreckers for under $200 or so.
There will be plenty of guys over your way that should be able to do it, but I use JC Engines in Croydon. If you want to use them, speak to Joe (0401018932). Say Liam sent you.
its a shame that holden didnt keep using the 202; instead they changed to the fuckin riceburner RB30 3L i6. i just cannot believe that holden would use foreign product in their cars.
the RB30 is a tough little engine, and more technologically advanced than the 202. But that said, look what ford has done with their old straight 6. It's the same motor it's always been, except for the change to OHC and then DOHC and a few other odds and ends. People get mega power out of them.
Wonder what holden could have done with the 202. We'll never know.
Still gotta love the rumble of a 202 over RB30's!!
I'm using a distributor I custom made. Holden bottom and a ford hall effect top. Either this way or using a top from a VL is the best way of doing things.
by the way mate, if i were u, i'd modify the front bumper, and move the number plate up a little bit, because the number plate blocks the intercooler a little bit doesn't it??
The centre divider part of the bumper has been removed. The cooler gets plenty of airflow due to group A bar. The number plate doesn't really affect it. Plus it hides the fact that there is an intercooler.
yeah why not. There are a few companies out there that can sell you conversion kits to make it a lot easier. The alloytec is used in Alfa Romeos and a few other cars in Europe in a twin turbo version. Something you could always look at doing.
i cqame across a 1998 R34 skyline, the owner was 19 years old and driving like a fuckin hoon. the engine was fucked; timing chain flexing more than usual which indicates it is fucked, the conrod bearings on cylinder number 2,3 & 5 were worn down all the way to the copper, there were several ridges in the bore of cylinder number 4 & 6, some of the pushrods were weakened so much from stress you could snap it in half if you tried
very nice car mate. considering this uses an aussie built red motor, i'd love to see this car race against some ricer VLs and beat the living shit through the cunts!!!!
Last dyno run was with the old turbo. On 10 psi is was 224.7kW (301.3HP) at the wheels. With the new turbo and more boost, it should break the 300rwkW mark. So at the motor, that's about 500HP. Not too shabby for an old school six.
not yet. Old clutch couldn't handle the power, and slipped at full boost in 4th. Once it's back on the road, and goes for a dyno tune with the new turbo, i'll run it down the strip. Hopefully a low 11 or high 10.
Supra 5 speed and custom button clutch setup. There are VL turbos running high 10's with about 280rwkW, so i shouldn't be too far behind them with 300.
speaking of VL's, im half way through the process of restoring a rusted up, dinted VL commodore with no engine or trans, im considering dropping a 202ci EFI red motor into it, with a 6 speed auto ZF gearbox used in some of the falcons. wat sort of problems do u reckon i would run into while trying to get it fitted???
Generally, you can't put older engines into newer cars without major engineering certificates (due to better emissions with newer engines). They will give you headaches over it for sure. You're better off doing an RB30 or putting in an RB25/26. They're way more bullet proof than the old 202, and can make a lot more power. It's less work for you then too, since the K frame is already set up to take the RB series motors.
It's a black block. The blues/blacks are stronger and have an extra crank journal, and the 12 port head flows a lot better. Starfire rods are the strongest, and are the same as the black rods. I had the crank nitrided and the rods shot peened for extra strength. All the specs are on my site (see the video description)
Fuel injection is easy to do. and well worth it. Respray cost about $4k, but I did the rubbing down myself, so made it a bit cheaper. You can get cheap resprays, but you get what you pay for.
Computer, wiring loom, fuel rail, regulator and injectors, inlet manifold and throttle body, factor/aftermarket extractors (as I don't think the carby exhaust manifold fits with the EFI inlet manifold), intake piping, air flow meter (attached to airbox) pump, return fuel line (you'll have to run it to the tank somehow, or put in a VK/VL tank.
Saw this at Cruise for charity, tuff VK man !

You will most likely need unleaded valves/seats yes. I run E10 currently, but I'm interested in using E85 when it's more widely available.

speaking of VL's, im half way through the process of restoring a rusted up, dinted VL commodore with no engine or trans, im considering dropping a 202ci EFI red motor into it, with a 6 speed auto ZF gearbox used in some of the falcons. wat sort of problems do u reckon i would run into while trying to get it fitted???

Do you mean an EFI motor out of a VK? Those are black motors (they just have a red rocker cover). Red motors stopped being used when the VC came out.

Generally, you can't put older engines into newer cars without major engineering certificates (due to better emissions with newer engines). They will give you headaches over it for sure. You're better off doing an RB30 or putting in an RB25/26. They're way more bullet proof than the old 202, and can make a lot more power. It's less work for you then too, since the K frame is already set up to take the RB series motors.

hey cool man i ttok a 309 out of my vk to do up over time and im gnna put a 202 in and do up
which colour 202 did you use red blue or black

It's a black block. The blues/blacks are stronger and have an extra crank journal, and the 12 port head flows a lot better. Starfire rods are the strongest, and are the same as the black rods. I had the crank nitrided and the rods shot peened for extra strength. All the specs are on my site (see the video description)

Wicked! im looking to put a vk fuel injection on my 202 in my vc, hopefully it will be cheap and easy to do. What did the respray cost?
Jimmetalrules5546 3 years ago
Fuel injection is easy to do. and well worth it. Respray cost about $4k, but I did the rubbing down myself, so made it a bit cheaper. You can get cheap resprays, but you get what you pay for.

Cheers for the info, so i just put the fuel rail on, airbox, ecu, vk tank, high pressure fuel pump, regulator and return line?
Jimmetalrules5546 3 years ago
Parts you need:
Computer, wiring loom, fuel rail, regulator and injectors, inlet manifold and throttle body, factor/aftermarket extractors (as I don't think the carby exhaust manifold fits with the EFI inlet manifold), intake piping, air flow meter (attached to airbox) pump, return fuel line (you'll have to run it to the tank somehow, or put in a VK/VL tank.

The factory Bosch ECU isn't tuneable, so if you're planning on turbo etc, you should invest in an aftermarket management system instead
