This is one of the most ripped-off endings in the HISTORY of cinema! DePalma even ripped himself off by doing something very similar at the end of "Dressed To Kill!"
There was already a Brian De Palma interview in which De Palma himself pointed it out. He didn't seem to feel uncomfortable about this 'mistake' as you call it. In fact, it's proof that, for his time, he was a creative director, so I say thank God there is real proof. He checked all of his films and he would not of left it in there if he didn't want to...
(1976) at Miramar theater in Manila, PHIL.. it was posted outside the theater that no one will be allowed entry during the last 5 minutes of the movie (because you can). and that really set up the movie goer, thinking, aha! --- Really, when was the last time you (as a movie buff) had a nice jolt at your seat, watching a movie---1978 Alien, and the Other (with Nic. Kid.)
@mmcrytb Same here. I know a girl who thinks it isn't scary. I think she's nuts :D Everyone's different, i suppose. I think "Carrie" is one freaky movie!!
The one real glaring mistake keeps getting missed. You see Norma (P.J. Soles) at a salon under a hair dryer the day of the prom, but in the very next scene she's at the gym with the pigtails and baseball cap she's worn in all the previous scenes.
Two more "mistakes": At the very opening of the film, when the girls are playing volleyball, Amy Irving's character, Sue Snell, hits the ball twice in a row (against the rules!) and on the gym field when the girls are exercising, you can see a split horizon line between them and a close-up of Betty Buckley (it was two shots put together)
@jackiebeat Also at the beginning, Carrie grabs Sue's arm twice when she's pleading for help. Both times, Sue swerves to the side and pushes Carrie away. Both pushes are from different camera angles, but both times Carrie grabs the same spot and Sue ends up in the same position, meaning they accidentally/deliberately repeated it.
That was one of the creepiest horror scenes ever. Thanks for the technical stuff about filming backwards and night for day. That was done on Rod Serling's Night Gallery also. I am thinking of "The House" with Joanna Pettet during the dream sequence.
It was definitely filmed in reverse -- this is a well-known fact. It is also shot "night-for-day." (Even though the sun is out at the beginning, the sign is shown against a black "night" sky) And that is Sissy Spacek's hand. They offered to use a stunt double down in the box, but she was determined to do it all! She said the lava or pumice stones scraped her up pretty bad.
WHEN I SAW THIS MOVIE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE THEATER, I WAS ONLY 12 YEARS OLD, AND THIS SCENE WAS THE ALL-TIME SCARIEST SCENE I EVER SAW IN A MOVIE. [Once you see it for the FIRST time, you already KNOW what's going to happen, so if you see it AGAIN, it won't have the same effect. It's like seeing JAWS for the first time......the FIRST time is the SCARIEST ! ]
It wasn't shot backwards. Dead giveaway (if you'll pardon the expression!) is the wind blowing Amy's dress and hair back . You can't fake that in reverse. All they did was film it in slow motion to give it that dream-like quality.
Still a pretty effective scene 35 years later. Even though I've seen this several time it still has the power to make me jump.
@redrosestoo - No, the cars in the background were moving normally, the film was played backwards. When they shot the scene, Irving walked backwards with small steps so the effect would be more subtle. If you look closely at the fabric of her dress, you can see the ripples moving in reverse, but since she was moving so slowly, it's hard to tell the difference. They probably had a fan blowing toward her to make her dress flow away from her as she walked backwards, making it even more subtle.
@redrosestoo Of course you can fake it in reverse, it all depends on what direction the wind is coming from, and if the wind is stronger than whatever breeze you'd cause with your own momentum. Try it yourself; face into a moderately strong breeze and walk forward. The wind will blow your hair back. Now stop, and start walking backward, still facing into the wind... your hair will STILL be blown backwards.
when carrie got doused in pig blood, her dress was barely soaked, but then when they cut to another angle, she was completely covered with it. still my most favorite movie of all time tho. :D
@Muse131 According to IMDB, Brian DePalma wanted that scene to have an "eerie" and "surreal effect" so he shot it backwards and reversed the scene forwards in slow motion.
Yes it does, but actually, that's just the kind of thing I would expect in a dream. Apparently, De Palma thought it would fit right in, too. He had to have seen it during filming, screening, editing. He didn't bother to block off the street for traffic and had to know that would happen.
I think it was one of those "let's go with it if it happens kind of mistakes." I love how it adds to the strangeness of it.
Don't forget ( maybe you didn't elsewhere ) the part where Carrie's dead, bloodied mom WALKS with her into the closet, where Chris plots her prom revenge BEFORE Carrie was even invited to the prom, etc.Enjoyable, bumbling film.
@billjoe39 That annoyed me too. In the remake Chris plots revenge after Carrie finds out she is going. Although you could assume that Chris was going to make someone take Carrie and Tommy asking her was just convenient.
Why isn't the cars in the background going backwards?
