In the original you could hear the weariness and despondence in Gabriel's voice, alternating with hope-filled defiance and Bush's compassionate little girl voice and gentle chiding was the perfect compliment to it. @ronnoc1990 A) Africa is not a country. When the issue is continent wide, then it has to be treated a bail out. B) Think Afghanistan and South America- they are both filthy rich with resources, yet don't their economies resemble Africa's? Common pattern? I think so. When western infrastructure is imposed, their is a payment too- all the resources in these territories are sanctioned off to western corporations. They are poor countries coz actually, they own NO resources. We own them.

Peter pulls off emotional intonation of each word so effortlessly, it's not until someone else takes a crack at it that you realize how much he brings to it. It's not like Bono's a rookie at this stuff.

As a big Bono fan and an Alicia fan, this version doesn't stir any emotions in me the way Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush/Paula Cole does. In fact, Alicia does well, but Bono's version just doesn't do anything for me here.

Hold notes.. maybe. My ears tell me shes a little flat but then my ears are very far from perfect so I am likely very wrong on that..
But that is not what singing is. Singing is ment to be plesent to listen to and not "hold a note"
What I can't stand is the wild pitch shifting carry that is not a natural part of the song and hence the cat swinging reference.
Still at least she doesn't sound like a fire alarm like katty perry does.

Her singing in a succession of notes over one syllable in a line is called a melisma you moron. That's a musical style and she was able to have control over those notes. The one campaign is not and never declared itself to be a nonprofit org or charity org. Any donations they receive are to fund their campaign which is to get Governments to increase aid to the poorest countries in the world. The person below spreads rumors when they never took the time to understand what the One campaign is. The world can't get anything done w/ that attitude. Willie Nelson & Sinead O'Conner by far have done the best perfornance of this song I have heard. I've never been much of an Alica Keys Fan although I admit she is rather talented. But Bono Did good here. They should have got Obama to do Alica's part. Too bad the one campaign got caught 2 months ago that 98% of their donations were going in rich peoples pockets like that Witch Oprah and only like 2% was going to Africa.

i think the thing i like most about Gabriel's version is the arrangement. This aint bad but its missing many of those elements which i love. eg Tony Levins basslines and those pipe sounds. I think the singers her are fine :-)

It was in no way a statement that all of africa is desperate for charity, or a criticism of anything, except for criticism of the concept that it's wrong for someone to be charitable to one thing instead of another.
