Piaf's performance is so powerful it's like watching an entire movie in four and a half minutes. You're transported to another world and sharing the sadness of the singer. The emotion in her voice is incredible. Still unique and world class after all these years. Everyone should own a little bit of Piaf.
This song is superb and I love this English version the best. I have it as well as many other Piaf recordings. To me, the best part is at the end, when she breaks the glass and you hear that last bass note on the piano....breathtaking.
tahle drobná holka, vrabčák z ulice, ta má v sobě kouzlo vznést nás do oblak , prolétnout se světem, který nemá všední še´d, bolest změní v růže žhavě vonící, .... v světle šantánů, v kouři hospůdek své srdce ti rozdá v tónech písní svých, kam dala své srdce láskyplné:život do něj rozdala...vrabčáček co vzlétl, nás tu zanechal perutěmi z písní létat za ní dál nad šedou tvář dnů, nad bolest, nad smutek a stesk
Am trying to imagine what Frehel could have done with this song. Probably more hearbreaking than even Edith's version, especially since Frehel did die in a poor room in Pigalle. Viva Piaf and Frehel!
This has long ben one of my favourite Piaf songs in French and until I found this I was not awaree she had recorded an English version...absolutely beautiful and thank you so much for posting it
J'adore cette chanson! I love this song! Je l'ai découverte en français, mais cette version anglaise est originale. I discovered it in French and the English version is original.
it is not so difficult to understand she saw to lovers in a parisin cafe and she imagine..and remember a sad love story she lived, and talks about the drama in love in living.you must be stupid to not understand
Um, let's talk about who really does not understand the song. FYI, she works in a cafe, the lovers come into rent a room that is above he cafe and then they commit suicide and are then found the next day. THAT is what she is remembering.
Es obvio q no hablas bien el ingles ni el frances, por eso te escribo en espanol para q entiendas mejor. Mejor saber de lo q hablas antes de criticar a la gente tan feo como has hecho.
Translation:
Its obvious that you don't speak English of French very well so I'll write you in Spanish so that you can understand better. Better to know what you're talking about before so rudely criticizing someone like you have.
Sí, jimm2224 tiene razón. No critica a la gente, por favor. A veces, es difícil a comprender algunas canciones. Nunca se critica porque a veces se equivoca ¿no?
@pestuga Well you must be pretty stupid because you clearly got everything wrong... It has nothing to do with her remembering her sad love story, not about "drama." It's about a bar tender who witnessed a young couple commit suicide in a cafe/hostel...
@pestuga Are you so stupid not to see the obvious imagery? "...They took that room and heaven walked in... we found them next day the way they planned so quiet, so cold, but still hand in hand, the sunshine of love was all they possessed; and so in the sunshine we laid them to rest. They slipped side by side... I'm sure that they found a place of their own. So why must I see the ribbon she wore... Be still children still... your shadows may start..."
@pestuga heaven walked in - death, eternal life... finding them in a room as they planned, hand in hand... quiet and cold - signs of death. The sunshine of love was all they possessed - meaning that they no longer possessed love but mirrored the love they had in life. Laid them to rest - obvious... In Edith Piaf's time they buried married couples side by side, nowadays most are buried one on top of the other. What kind of idiot are you to think that this is a nostalgic love story?
its cool dont worry about it...the issue is that the words in english are different from the french version...in the french version shes working in a cafe and two lovers walk in to rent a room for a day *wink* *wink*...however the next day she walked in and they were dead hand in hand (possibly suicide)...during this song she is just retelling the story as she works like she did the day they came in....in french she says that she cant handle the pain in her soul and heart when she remebers
It is a beautiful song and I get teary EVERY time I hear it. Yes the two lovers were very young and obviously in love and one can only imagine why they did what they did. Could have been pressure from family and they decided this was the only way that they could be together eternally...who knows? I think this one is my favorite of Edith's and, yes, the French version is much better. :-)
Such a sad song. Like both the enlish and the french version of it. But of course, the french version is the winner when Edith sing - even more dramatic and heartbreaking in french...
Sorry, I got these lyrics off the internet and I thought I fixed them! Thanks for telling me! :) Also, I don't know who wrote either the French or English versions of this song; sorry. :(

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I tear up everytime, too.
"We found them next day the way they had planned
So quiet, so cold, but still hand in hand
The sunshine of love was all they possessed" and
"So why must I see the ribbon she wore, the glow on his face
when I close the door
Be still, children, still, your shadows they start the tears in my eyes and tears in my heart"
These parts really do me in. :-(

it may help to have these phrases from this text which is transcribed slightly inaccurately here:
who am i to care FOR A love affaire
they WANTED a place, a small hideaway
the wall was so BARE, the carpet so thin
and i closed that door, and turned TO DEPART
love is nothing new, i HAVE work to do
so QUIET so cold, but still hand in hand
they sleep side by side, two CHILDREN alone
the robbon she wore, THE GLOW ON HIS FACE
