  • spent a fair bit of time envolved wuth this, would love to see it back, where are or what has happened to wayne mankin and robin best, the shed is still there boys a few beers then mt gambier sprint cars sound good en

  • I live near that truck

  • I mean I love the Bud Shootout and All Star...but I wish NASCAR still did events like this or what they did in Japan

  • what you hear with this track

  • was at that time I was born

  • Looks like an Australian version of Charlotte

  • MULLETS!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE THE MULLETS!!

  • Thumbs up if you think Bob Jane should upgrade Calder to FIA and Nascar standeds

  • sadly i dont think that they will ever race again at this track. i went there a few months ago and got a look at the speedway and its looking very sad and worn out. its certainly seen its day. apparently it was built up on old landfill which each year sinks a little and therefore ruins the track little by little.

there going to tear it down and put more bloody housing there like they did at waverly park which i bet the afl are regretting now with all the sharing of gounds atm

  • precision racing...no surprise Grice didnt last long..

  • Thanks for uploading. Just have gotten into this NASCAR craze and its nice to see vision from hometown. Mike Raymond and Wilko too. Vintage stuff.

  • This is no doubt a long shot, but do you have any vision of the WTCC touring car race from '87 when they used both circuits?

  • I have some Thunder dome coverage on my Channel but wow this is very cool! Thanks for uploading mate this is great!!! Never new Bobby Alison came to Australia :O

  • there was another race there at the end of the 1988 season or start of '89, but i dont know who raced, who won, and i havent seen anyone who has footage

i think more top-name drivers went to the second event, like Earnhardt and Wallace, etc. but dont quote me on that lol

  • The Goodyear Christmas 500 (with a $1 million prize purse) saw Sterling Marlin, Morgan Shepard, Dave Marcis, Michael Waltrip, Harry Gant, Rick Wilson, Jimmy Means, Trevor Boys, Rodney Combs, and several others come over.

There wasn't another big American invasion until the 1990 Christmas 400, where Terry Labonte, Ken Schrader, Dick Trickle, Phil Barkdoll and a few others came over.

  • @TopCat956 - im looking to get my hands on that Christmas races, as i dont have either of them but know people who might possess them

  • Oh wow. I've never even heard of this race! Like Kyle, I know about Japan, but Calder Park, the V8 Supercars track? Wow.

Learn something new every day. Just made my afternoon

  • oh my god man this is so good. i remember seeing this on tape when i was ten. so good to see this. had a ride around calder last year. would love to see some small series start. up bob jane what a good bloke

  • The Aussie version of Talladega! But not key stars other than Bonnett and a few of them ran. No King Petty, Earnhardt, D.W., how come?

  • Nowadays is there any big racing series there or only small ones?

  • @Maxtremus Sadly neither NASCAR nor AUSCAR run in Australia right now. Calder Thunderdome is used for track days only.

Pity they can't use Marcus Ambrose's success in America to try and get it going back here. Aussie motorsport at the top level sorely lacks variety right now.

  • @Holden308 Amen to that!

  • holy crap! thanks for the up. this is a rare one indeed.

  • Why are they driving the wrong way around Calder Park?

  • the track was designed so cars could driver in either direction

American oval tracks go in a counter-clockwise directions, so this probably threw off a few of the Australian oval trackers that normally make right-hand turns instead lol

  • american stock cars are left-hand drive, if they drove clockwise it would expose the drivers to potentially massive injuries, and really for no reason

  • @hammr25 The top category ALWAYS raced counter-clockwise. Only Auscar and the HQ Holdens raced clockwise.

  • @Zadan Correct, but the real reason is so the drivers door is never on the same side as the wall.

  • This is really cool. I knew about the races in Japan in the late 90's, but this one is news to me.

  • I've always wanted to see this race, thank you for posting this wildbeemer.

  • why was dale earnhardt not at this race?

  • was dale earnhardt there in this race?

  • no Earnhardt

  • Wonder if this place is still operating...

  • It is, but it's hardly ever used.

  • Never knew that this race happened. Maybe this was part of Ambrose's motivation? Great upload wildbeemer. The place looks similar to the SMI tracks.

  • i never knew they have a race there! Awesome!

  • i believe they ran there in 1989 as well, but dont quote me on that lol
