The shot has nothing to do with "flu", which doesn´t exist as such, either, but only a collection of symptoms which may or may not be related and none of which have anything to do with viruses, dead or alive. thick mucus in the nasal / sinus area, lung & bronchi may be reduced by high dose of vit B complex caps ( 100 mg 2-4 per day, age & weight dependant). I am not knowledgable about viruses, you'll have to ask someone else these questions. I too am asking questions about them. I was told all vaccinations against diseases are done with dead disease, but live disease surely would be far more difficult to fight, so it's better to have your immune system naturally develop.

Some vaccines contain attenuated live viruses. Chickenpox and measles vax is live. But the only ones that are live intranasal are flu and polio (used in 3rd world only) and they are both known to cause viral shedding that can cause contagion.

Other vaxes are 'inactivated' viruses (i.e. flu vax). Supposed to be enough to cause an immune reaction so your body 'remembers' the virus, without actually making you sick. My son did get a mild case of chicken pox from vax, though.
