Far East Mississippi - Ohio Players [Dayton, Ohio] - 1976 - "Their BEST non-charter. Nice funky guitar/harmonica/drums riffs. Is a masterpiece in slow, slo-o-o-ow grooves, incredibly textured with musical layers that are complex while never sounding cluttered." - Funk On Fire - The Mercury Anthology [Disc 2]. NOTE: Two other songs caught my ear in this compilation: Skin Tight-1974, Fopp-1975.
LIKE I PREVIOUSLY STATED IN THE FAR EAST MISSISSIPPI LIKE THE LONG ASS ST.JOHNS RIVER RUNNING THROUGH J,VILLE, FLA. TRIBUTARIES FOR SLAVE RUNNERS THE SPANISH WERE NOTORIUS FOR SLAVE TRADING IN MY HOME ST. AUGUSTINE,FLA. I AINT GOING JUST WANT TO BE FREE.
I DONT KNOW FAR EAST MISSISSIPPI MY LEAD ME UP THE MISSISSIPPI TO FROZEN CHI- TOWN,UH. RIGHT HERE IN G.A. THEY DONT ALLOW NO TRIPPING ITS THE REAL DEAL IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN . OH I MEAN MR. MEAN. ONE MORE CHORUS SUGARFOOT. OHIO PLAYERS. CYMBAL.
@jody808 yep, not just "want to be free", but in all the drumming from all the lp's on the mercury label!!! my high school years (1986-1990) were spent cramming all those lp's into my brain, and the sound of the ohio players is still there!!! WHAT THE FONK WIT IT??
This is a GREAT song!!!! Sounds like undercover message of some brtha running away from some slave dogs chasing him to put him back in chains...So typical of the history of African-Amricans to not FORGET!!! Thats probably why they wrote it!!!! ONE LOVE!!!
This track was actually a jam they put on another album, with Satch playin' the flute. Do you have that version HZ? I will post it as soon as I get back to Akron. I am on the road in New York right now but by May I will have it up.
