Harsh [or not] - having listened to music for 60 years, I know what I like. It's just my humble opinion limited to this one song, which I didn't much like, to begin with.
I'm a pro electric blues harp player. 5 minutes, 30 seconds of whatever they were playing was painful enough for me to listen to & Christelle manages to salvage some of it.
Maybe I should have just said nothing about it at all. Like our folks used to say, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all..."
'Poor' Jason gets relegated to being the unheralded accompanist. He had the toughest job in the room. I checked out this video because Jason spoke highly of Octavio's mastery, and I'd never before heard him play. Just getting back in touch after toying with harp as a kid. I'm not a fan of 'apples to oranges' comparisons, for the record. There isn't a slouch among them. Each one is an ace in their own right, and it was a jam. The complaint desk is closed. Have a bluesy day.
@LameBuffalo Perhaps a bit too harsh a critique, LB, but I must say that I did get that 'special feeling' when Christelle lit in. I discovered her channel recently, and she is a fine player: an example of someone who has chops but isn't bathing in them like overused perfume. One of my guitar-playing buddies and I have made similar comments over the years about guitarists. A talented musician can command an instrument but the true artist uses that gift with finesse to command the audience.
I disagree, I think he plays a very nice and musical solo. It may not be as sophisticated as the other players but it certainly is tasteful bit of playing.
I sincerely doubt Jason is turning away "in disgust", as you put it. If you watch more carefully it's pretty clear that the reason he's turning is so that he can signal Michael to repeat the head after Brandon finishes soloing. I don't know why you think he cut his solo short, Brandon's solo was same amount of time as Christelle's, in fact his solo was longer than Michael's. Your trying to read into things and you're coming up with false conclusions.
@sonnyrunner I know, what exactly is your point? My comment was in reply to turtles12, not superchucker77/Brandon, and was made before Brandon posted his comment. So I'm really not sure what you were getting at.
I can tell you for a fact that Jaosn did not turn away in disgust. And as far as my playing is concerned, I was not trying to be super flashy while playing in third position. I prefer a level of simplicity in such a context.
I can't help make some comments... slightly bad.
They are all great harp players, some very, very virtuous... but the real fact is that no one of them has jazz swing.
They all play like "harp" players, when they shoul look for the phrasing style of a jazz sax or a trumpet... as howard levy does.

Christelle, I hope you realize that you were the only one who could find the 'groove' out of all these other performers.
Without a doubt, your performance out-classed the rest; it was the only good performance of the bunch. The rest seemed to be lost.

The rest: 2

Otavio Castro set the bar way too high for the others I think...even though the others are very good players too.

You can see Jason turn away visibly in disgust, he cuts your solo short is all I mean. He knew it too.

Totally agreed. Especially as compared to Christelle Berthon who followed him, I thought Brandon Bailey played with a lot of heart and soul.
