It's interesting the way the Buddy Hackett character feels absolutely comfortable in correcting Amaryllis's "can I?'" to "may I?' I'm not that ancient, but in my memory that response was once routine. These days, a child looks at you as if you had three heads when you say that, or insist on a "please." Such a shame.

Consider the fact that English was basically born out of Norman soldiers trying to pick up Anglo-Saxon bar maids. It's a bastard language, not that there's anything wrong with that. It's chalk full of loanwords, frequently breaks its own rules, has inane spelling sometimes, and is very open to slang.

Why fight it?

English is for the common man, not for Kings or nobles.
