  • Wow. Wonder how many abused and depressed single women happened because of that line of reasoning over the years. Sheeze - I'd rather be single than stupid.

  • BUDDY HACKETT!

  • Man, I wish more men in this world had this type of attitude towards women :) And it wouldn't help if he had this talent, too!

  • @CallMeAvocado Uh... where do you live that they don't? There's no shortage of men looking for one night stands and no commitment.

  • I love this movie... but I hear Buddy Hackett's voice and all I hear is Scuttle from the Little Mermaid. :)

  • This video has absolutely no dislikes. I can see why.

  • @cinemaker006 no he didn't

  • Seth MacFarlane took a classic and improved upon it. And that's a tough thing to do.

  • @cinemaker006 Not even close.

  • @cinemaker006 Not even close

  • God I hate Amaryllis.

  • I love how Robert Preston points to the little girl likes he's deafly afraid of her!

  • thumbs up if robert preston is much better than matthew broderick

  • Her laugh at the end is so creepy.

  • omg....that guy (not Harold Hill) is the voice of Scuttle from The Little Mermaid!!! :D

  • @Cardcaptorsfanx249

    You mean Buddy Hackett ?

  • @JubalCalif ya lol him

  • That's probably the cleanest looking stable in history! Oh I forget....rectal emissions didn't exist in the mind of Hollywood at that time. THANKS for posting this clip! It's such a cute number. You've MADE my day & my week! CHEERS! :)

  • 1:20 for song :)

  • 1:53-1:57 = sexiest person alive. 1:57-2:02 = best ballet ever performed ;D

  • I'm so glad. I got this solo hands down,

and I need to study his charm

    Robert Preston is AMAZING!

  • "I cheer & I rave for the virtue I'm too late to save."

I cannot believe my grandma let me watch this as a kid, haha!

  • Honestly, I looked this up solely because of Seth MacFarlane's performance of it on Conan. I'm now in love with this song. And I can't wait for Seth's album!

  • He's singing a sensual song around a six year old, in the super conservative 1910's.

  • Horsie!

  • Seth Macfarlane covered this fantasticly on Conan, I will be checking out his album.

  • the little girl in this video kinda freaks me out. anyone else?

  • THAT IS A SMALL HORSE!!!!!

  • i LOVE this movie, and had a lot of fun when i was in the musical myself! and i LOVE this song! hahahaha so many awesome one liners and innuendos hahaha.

i smile and i grin, when a gal with a touch of sin walks in... :P

  • I love this movie! What a great flick/performance! Its a bit before my time (im 34) but its a timeless classic.

  • I love this song from The Music Man.

    It is a classic.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • i dun understand the lyrics..

    wt r they talking abt?

  • @berridreamer Harold thinks that Marian had an affair with Mr. Madison. He's saying that he wants a girl with more "experience" than an innocent Sunday school teacher.

  • It's interesting the way the Buddy Hackett character feels absolutely comfortable in correcting Amaryllis's "can I?'" to "may I?' I'm not that ancient, but in my memory that response was once routine. These days, a child looks at you as if you had three heads when you say that, or insist on a "please." Such a shame.

  • @januarynorth I suppose there is some merit to trying to keep a language "pure, but with English, it tends to be pointless.

Consider the fact that English was basically born out of Norman soldiers trying to pick up Anglo-Saxon bar maids. It's a bastard language, not that there's anything wrong with that. It's chalk full of loanwords, frequently breaks its own rules, has inane spelling sometimes, and is very open to slang.

    Why fight it?

English is for the common man, not for Kings or nobles.

  • May I visit the 'horses'? Bwahahahaha!!!!

  • hahaha...for the lady who knows what time it is....I love this movie my school did this production its still my favorite

  • Hello to everyone from Monique Vermont (formerly Amarylis). It is so rewarding to hear all of your lovely comments of a job well done when I ws so young!

  • Anyone else think Amaryllis looks exactly how Mary Steenburgen would have looked as a tween?

  • @tjmooney I thought the exact same thing!

  • My grandparents made me watch this movie when I was little. They're from Iowa so they absolutely love it. I thought I would hate it but it's still a favorite of mine to this day (especially this song)!

  • I have this movie on DVD and the quality isn't as good as this!

  • I love this film <3

  • You're more than welcome to post more videos. What great quality!

  • "The virtue I'm too late to save" What a great line! I love this movie.

  • lyrics?

  • lyrics?

  • Can somebody get me the piano sheet music for this?

  • Little girl gets quite an education in the stable.

  • shit high quality on youtube for a 60 year old movie wow.....

  • Thank you for sharing this.

  • Robert Preston is the best. Music Man, Victor/Victoria and Herb Tarlic's dad in WKRP -- doesn't get better than that. And let's not forget "Chicken Fat."

  • An absolutely brilliant song from a wonderful movie, and the Broadway stage soundtrack was even better (still available on CD)! . But you cannot beat Robert Preston, and Shirley Jones, at the height of their powers! I flinch, I shy, when the lass with the delicate air goes by

I smile, I grin, when the gal with a touch of sin walks in

I hope, I pray, for Hester to win just one more 'A'

The sadder but wiser girl's the girl for me

The sadder but wiser girl for me

  • NO one can compare with Robert Preston's presence and energy. Mathew Brodrick really misses the mark and falls way short.

I'm sad he died of lung cancer . . . . he was irreplaceable talent!

    LOVE YOU ROBERT!!!!!

  • I can't believe I watched this as a kid. It's true how things just go right over the head of innocent children. "The virtue I'm to late to save?" oh man, haha

  • they're doing this in front of Amaryllis? that's weird.

  • Robert Preston is so great. And he looks like he is having the best time. I hope making the movie was as enjoyable as he makes it look. Love Buddy Hackett too!

  • Buddy Hacket!!!!!!!! Love him!!!

Great show too, this song is very good and so true to life... it talks about modern issues!

  • Haha this scene is so funny...I love it. =)

  • Hestor? A?

  • It's a reference to "The Scarlet Letter".

  • @Lamaniz

yeah it's from the Scarlet Letter

because Hester had a child out of wedlock... and so she had to wear a scarlet A on her chest...

  • @Lamaniz

Specifically, Hester Prynne from the Scarlet Letter. She was labeled as an adulteress by her Puritan neighbors and forced to wear a red letter A on her clothing for the rest of her life.

  • @Lamaniz To elaborate for all those people who don't know - Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter was branded with an A for committing adultery when she believed her husband was dead. So wanting Hester to win just one more A would be wanting her to commit another sinful act. Quite a cheeky and clever line.

  • mmm... Chicken croqeuttes

  • nice shoes, preston!

  • did they make a Scarlet Letter reference?

  • yup

  • I never noticed that before, but yes

  • We just did this show at my school. This dance was absolutely HYSTERICAL.

  • Am I the only one that thinks this looks like rediculously high quality for youtube?

  • @ratbutcher

It is super clean, and IN SYNC!

  • @ratbutcher Oh heck yeah. Stuff like this is WAY TOO

GOOD FOR IT. YouTube's speed is vulgar homemade

vids of people sucking each other's filthy toes & lying

    fraud-politicians on "The View".

  • @4freespeech Evidently that is all you watch on YouTube. What ratbutcher meant was the high definition quality of the video.

  • @ratbutcher It's a particularly high quality source material, a restored print of a movie.

  • @ratbutcher Ridiculously high quality for 1962, as well.

  • @ratbutcher

I second that emotion! And I was thinking the same thing! What a shame that every video clip here at youtube doesn't have this same awesome quality & crispness! CHEERS! :-)

  • Haha! I love this song... but i can't help thinking it's a little wrong that in the version he's singing it in front of a sweet little girl. Hahaha! Good ol' Harold.

  • Hopefully she didn't understand - not yet! ;-)

  • @YorickTheJester - yeh that poor little girl clapping and laughing at lyrics she does not understand... let's hope she doesn't become a "sadder but wiser girl" one day!

  • @YorickTheJester

You make an interesting point. But I'm sure the lyrics are all going over that cute little girl's head. She's just enjoying petting the horses & admiring the fellas' fancy footwork. Cute & catchy tune, I must say. Thanks for your thoughtful comment! :)

  • He's nice to let her visit the horses after viewing hours.

  • i am trying out for harold hill for my play and this is my audition song. thanx

  • It's mine, too! Lol. :)

  • I have to do this dance as marcellus in our play, I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing

  • I <3 Buddy Hackett in this song! thanks 4 putting it on here!
