He is, in general, fantastic technically. But its always struck me that he plays with virtually no musicality, certainly whenever i've seen him play. No musicality, and no composure. Every time he breaks down in recitals, he starts playing even quicker. Shame really...
@BagpipeHeadache I didn't say he's not Gordon Duncan; I said no Gordon Duncan as in he is not as musical a player as Gordon Duncan was. Don't get me wrong, Chris is a fantastic player but I disagree when people say he's better or "the new" Gordon.
sgtcrab1 correct me if i am wrong, but do the drones not alter after a period of time and need brought back into tune?? 8 minutes playing and u expect the pipes to sit !!!. can u play like this? no? then y are u criticising one of the greatest living pipers?? UR A MESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been playing for 4 years and I cant comprehend how this is even possible, he has made sounds and rythym patterns come out of the pipes that i couldnt have imagined.
i have seen quite a few guys before with fast hands in person....jack lee, gordon duncan, stu liddell, ryan canning, mark saul, danny boyle....and I gota say that he just played probably the most ridiculous stuff I have ever seen as far as speed is concerned!
nevermind speed. you must have control. Even Chris looses control over what he is playing. he makes a couple of stops. But he is still one of the best pipers i have ever heard.
Fantastic playing, as per usual, but I'm always struck at how dour and staunch audiences are at these things. Take the magnificent piping out and one would think it were a funeral when scanning the crowd? Enjoyed it all the same. Thanks for posting.
Regarding his "talking fingers" and "like a twitch".....he is simply adjusting the ring on his finger. Take another look. Probably more like a nervous habit.
haha.. notice that at the start when he is speaking his fingers are still going! wow.. he is like one my idols.. he has achieved so much in his piping at such a young age! amazing!
No doubt an amazing player, but I've always thought his posture looks way uncomfortable. Obviously works for him, though; always a pleasure to listen to.
truly a master of his trade this man makes it look so easy... all of his music is amazing i dont think he has any tunes i dont likkeep up the good piping
"all frills with no substance"?? That's a bit silly, isn't it? Chris won both the Bratach and the J.B. Robertson in 2007, previous wins include the Former Winners MSR at the Argyllshire Gathering, the overall champion at Cowal, A grade MSR at the Northern Meeting, 1st in the PM Donald MacLeod Memorial MSR, the Gold Medal at the Northern Meeting, and many, many others. How he fitted in the time between being of Pipe Major of the Grade 1 Scottish Power Pipe Band, I dunno.
@bagpiss This WAS filmed more than two and a half years ago, when it all was relatively new. Not seen any of your new tunes on Youtube..... not seen ANY of your tunes on Youtube!!
Among others, Chris is playing is The Barachio's Reel from his CD Notes Frae Ma Heid, (I think). I've not seen the World's DVD, so I can't comment on that. The last tune on the vid is Chris' version of Mason's Apron.
im getting a lesson from him :D

I agree; ridiculous! I've heard him play live
and he is an amazing player; he can do it all,
Individual tastes are one thing, but to imply mediocrity in his musicianship has no credibility whatsoever.
