That's not to say that large scale whaling should be allowed, but the population can certainly handle losing 41 individuals. The population is not very dense, even in urban centres compared to countries such as Korea and Japan. Many people drive to work, school, uni etc as the public transport is not good enough. Buses are much more commonly used than trains and transport across the country is done by trucks

The bowhead whale, the whale that they are allowing north american aboriginals to hunt, is listed as a "species of least concern". There are around 25,000 of them worldwide. That's not to say that large scale whaling should be allowed, but the population can certainly handle losing 41 individuals. The north pacific right whale, on the other hand, which they are NOT whaling, has around 400-900 individuals. Get your facts in order.

This is not an Australia - japan Issue, in 1986 the numbers of humpbacked whales was reduced to a few 100 and they were on the brink of extinction, only a ban on their hunting has allowed them to come back from the edge of destruction.

This is a really horrific piece of video. Of course Australians care about our endangered native species. It is very hard to undo the mistakes of previous generations. Introduced species do more damage than humans directly do at the moment. Foxes, cane toads, cats, dogs, rabbits, introduced birds, camels, bufalo etc are doing damage everyday to habitats and local species. The Japanese Fisheries Agency is paying people to post racist propaganda to divert attention from its whaling. This cowardly, cynical ploy is part of a sustained campaign for a few rich men to secure whaling rights so that they can continue to profit by destroying the marine environment.
The Japanese people are being lied to by their own government. HELP these people AND the whales; make the Japanese Fisheries Agency accountable for its actions. It's not about race, it's PURELY ABOUT GREED.

Why is it that so many Japanese take it so personally that one of their commercial industries gets criticized? It's like the fishing companies ordered them all to respond by telling them lies like 'their culture is in danger' so the people automatically respond by reciting the same propaganda. It's all a lot like how so many Japanese were brainwashed to mindlessly die for their emporer in the war.

I don't care for whaling industry. I simply object to white racist hypocrisy of country that is far less eco-friendly than Japan, far less humane, with higher crime, slaughtering endangered species, inhumanely killing animals, but then suddenly found religion on the matters of whales.
First remove the skyscraper that is stuck in your own eye before trying to help Japan remove splinter from its own.

One, not all of Japan is clean of racism. They have an offical organized group who want foreingers out of the country. And we don't slaughter endangered species. Name some of them. I don't care too much about the whaling issue. And it's not just Australians who are trying to stop Japan. No one has made one comment about how racist America is in this issue

Australians do slaughter endangered species like dingos and rare cockatoos, but the main destruction is HABITAT DESTRUCTION, overgrazing, desertification, etc. Australia is eco-nightmare. It's much worse than killing 1000 among 100,000 Minke whales.

Parrots like Pepperberg's Alex and N'gisi have learned to use language. They recognize concepts (all green squares) and count them. They can explain how one object is different from another (blue key is bigger than red key).
Whales just sing some song. They do not use sounds to stand for things that are combined using grammar. No whale has been found to have an IQ approaching parrot.
But Australians destroy parrot and cockatoo habitat, grow monocultures, and slaughter these brainy animals.

Kill what endangered species? Minke whales are plentiful. There are nearly one million. It is necessary to kill a few other whales (fewer than 50) for research.
Are you talking about Australian farmers shooting endangered dingo without permits? Are you talking about white racists bringing nonnative species to Australia--for example, domesticated dogs, to interbreed with dingos and destroy the species? Do you mean bringing rabbits, sheep, and cows, to overgraze and turn Australia into a desert?

I am opposed to whaling personally, and I am a vegetarian. But I do not believe in dictating how others should behave, treating myself as superior.
I do not believe that one nation should dictate to another nation which animals are precious and intelligent.
I am waiting for scientific proof that whales are more intelligent than the tens of thousands of parrots, cockatoos, and galahs that are slaughtered by Australians, shot or clubbed, some dying slow and agonizing deaths from minor wounds.

I'm not sure if it's true or not, but it is completely irrelevant. What does CO2 have to do with the hunting of whales. And I said I wasn't against whaling except for the slow methods. Bringing that up just shows that you cannot come up with a new arguement to counter what I said so you try to attack Australia on something completely different.

What does CO2 have to do with hunting whales?
The REAL threat to whales is pollution and rising water temperatures caused by global warming. These are destroying the whale's habitat and the animals on which the whales feed.
If you think that killing 1000 of 1,000,000 Minke whales is going to push them to extinction, you obviously don't know how to use a calculator.

I didn't say that they're going to be extinct because of whaling. The only thing I'm against is the slow and painful method. And I did use google, but didn't find anything. And I just checked google images, and Japan has HIGHER than Australia according to a 1998 graph.

did you take into account the fact that Australia doesn't use nuclear energy? Australia is a bigger, less densely populated country and therefore is more reliant on car travel. Maybe thats why it has a higher CO2 emission rate per capita. I'm not saying it is ok but Australia is taking steps to reduce CO2 and hopefully will reduce it's emissions to even less than Japan

Well thankyou for telling me about my own country but I'm afraid you're wcars are heavily relied on in Australia. The population is not very dense, even in urban centres compared to countries such as Korea and Japan. Many people drive to work, school, uni etc as the public transport is not good enough. Buses are much more commonly used than trains and transport across the country is done by trucks

Japan is spending BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to help poor countries cut CO2 emissions. Greenhouse gasses are destroying the whale's habitat and killing more whales than any harpoon.

I like to restate that the only thing I have against whaling is the method, and that I find most hunting unneccesarry but I don't particualy care. But this video is racist to Australians by calling us racist. Australia isn't racist, it is multicultural. If the country was racist, the whole country would hate itself.

Okay, let you know the fact. Some whales are exterminate & in danger of extinction because of the commercial hunting of western countries in 18-19 century. Now number of some whales are recovered. It's time to restart commercial hunting of minke whales.

You're right. Australia isn't racist. They dislike whaling. Japan has been whaling in Australian waters so that's why they have come under so much heat. I don't have anything against whaling specifically, thought the methods should be stopped and improved to be more humane (instead of the grenade harpoons which cause a slowdeath). I don't like hunting in general, because it is unneccesary in a world where we no farm animals, and can kill them peacefully. I love Japan, I'm living there no.

It's not just in Southern ocean sactuaries. Also, they are called sanctuaries for a reason. Sanctuaries are meant to keep its animals safe.

That occured back when we didn'tknow better. The whole reason for the restricions on whale hunting is because whales nearly went extinct due to uncontrolled hunting. These days we are trying to protect animals.
