great layout mate......may be a silly question but as your layout is outside how do you stop the tracks from going rusty and do you have wheel adhesion problems with leafs on the line
@MiLLwallpaul231258 It's a question I've been asked a trillion times mate and the answer is simple. The track is made from an alloy called nickel silver. It does not rust and withstands just about anything that is thrown at it weatherwise. Wheel adhesion is not a problem with most of the locos as they are driven on all wheels. The ones with rubber traction tyres are no good in wet weather though and they only get used on really dry days.
Hi, i have just started my railway, its called the Clay Hill Line as we live on a hill and you gussed it the ground is solid clay "lol", i have uploaded a few video's but only using a cheap camera, so much more to do, i live in the Notts area and am trying to find people with the same outdoor idea so we can meet and run trains at different tracks, any idea's, thanks Rick
a bit far, i sea you have problems with siding space, i have that problem, wife won't let me, just started a tunnel and its not going down very well, cheers rick
The layout was originally concieved as a twin track main line with no siding space as a supplement to my more extensive layout in the loft. The loft layout fell into disuse however and I rather liked the idea of whizzing trains round the garden. So all the stock from the loft came downstairs and there it stayed
It's a twin track circuit so normally only two are running at one time. I can however run any number of locos independantly as the line is digitally controlled.
the base is outdoor plywood screwed to treated 4x2 creosoted softwood which is itself screwed to 2x2 posts 3.5 ft sunk 1.5 to 2 ft in the ground having been soaked in creosote for about a week. The layout has now been in existence since late 2002
Not sure which one you mean there.. i presume you mean the coach in the siding which is a Lima Coach painted by me as an experiment into connex livery. It was the only one i did and the coach has now been scrapped
I have not encountered any serious problems using DCC outdoors. I have recently upgraded to Bachmann Dynamis. The only problem has been loss of the infra red signal due to bright sunlight.
Steampics here from the 00 Gauge Garden-based Sutherland Steam Railway.Any chance of a Steam Gala sort of video featuring your layout? When you get time?Would like to see that.
I daresay it can be arranged at some point yes. There have been one or two stock changes to the line recently which has seen one or two of my steam locos go but there are still enough to do a gala and more locos will be joining the line this year (2008)
wow thats a truly amazing layot, have you ever considerd putting fine gravel or crushed rock as ballest. even just a small detail like that can greatly improve the looks of a layout.
Thanks...good to hear that you are interested in railways. Anything you would like to know please feel free to send me a private message and I will try and answer your questions.
The track is all Peco streamline code 100 Nickel Silver track. There are two types used wooden style and concrete sleepered style which is the lighter shade of sleepers shown in the vids.
It is OO gauge, The layout copes with rain very well. I do not run my train in the rain as a rule but if I'm having a running day and it rains they do run very well in the rain. The trains get a wipe down after running in the rain. the layout is made out of watrresistant materials and the track is made from Nickel silver which does not rust.
Not that one no but I have recently repainted the platforms.. i came down into the garden the next day to find a huge dollop of it on one.. I was not a happy bunny as you can imagine! It has since been cleaned & repainted. I have more of a problem with cats than birds. I have two well trained cats but unfortunately when they invite their mates into the garden for a party they are not so careful!
yeh my cats just ignore the trains completely lol. I get more interest out of the neighbours peering over the fence when i have a running session. Been away this weekend so no new vids for a bit
Well like you, when I was your age so did I. I have built my collection up over years and made many layouts. This is probably the best outdoor one I have ever made though.
My treasured "West Ham" loco is one that sits normally in the display cabinet during the winter months. She'll be out and about soon once spring has sprung :0) thanks for your comments and ratings. Jules. P.S I hope my loco performs better than the team are at the moment!!
Nice layout, thats the only thing my railway lacks, double track!Oh well, turntable will be going in soon allowing some more movements up and down the line.Nice stills too.The video of 'Wilton' being put through its paces is very nice.
Thank you.. the one thing my railway lacks is siding space. That I hope to rectify in the future.. but the layout is exactly what i wanted.. a double track main line. "Wilton" is one of my best performers, I do have "Blackmoor Vale" as well but she sits in a display cabinet and comes out on summer afternoons only. Thanks for your comments ratings and responses though.. keep watching, more to come when i have the time. MDM
Thanks, yes I do draw the line at running trains in horizontal rain and gale force winds. The layout has been down now for about 4 years and the only significant damage I get is from Cats!!

there were gales on the 18th?
Man, the weather on my birthday is always crap
and whats worse is.. Your layout it like 298203534w5486206 times better than mine :'(

wow where did you get tht connex loco from
mattprice266 3 years ago
Not sure which one you mean there.. i presume you mean the coach in the siding which is a Lima Coach painted by me as an experiment into connex livery. It was the only one i did and the coach has now been scrapped
metadyneman 3 years ago
yh tht one shame you scrapped it tho it looked really good
mattprice266 3 years ago
It was an old Lima Mk 1 which was in a scrapped state when I decided to experiment with the livery... I hated Connex livery anyway really.
metadyneman 3 years ago
I like it. The train stations look real. I know someone mamed Julie. What kimd of music is that?
08reed 3 years ago
Er... I'm not called Julie! The music is some mood music I got on CD in Cornwall.

do you keep all your locos in a shed or something?
Tuxedo748 3 years ago
Yes they are kept under cover.. alarmed and under lock & Key.

Is the rolling material pure stock, or homemade/adusted? And at wich scale is it?
Skoda130 4 years ago
all of the stock with the exception of the 2-HAP EMU (which has now left the line for pastures new) is all "off the shelf" ready-to-run stock
