...It was surely a victory for Egypt. A small nation having to fight practically the entire Western world. Ppl. dont take into consideration the odds they faced crossing the suez. Even Israel didnt believe anyone could cross Barleve(sp)..the biggest challenge for egypt now is democracy. Many in Egypt do in fact see him as a hero who got back Sinai but for the wrong reasons as they believe the 73 war was a "winning" war when in fact was a humiliating defeat...regardless of the American/Soviet involvement (am not saying anything about the reasons or his decision making). His visit to Israel got Sinai back. So I'm simply stating how he achieved the goal of the war...him being dead now is irrelevant to these historical facts.

Sadat was a great man. He was far better than Nasser and he got our land back against all odds. His brother died in 1973 war. Sadat was thinking about cutting the relation with Israel after their withdraw from Sinai because of Palestine. Nasser was a lot of noise with no actions. Despite all of this all the Egyptian leaders in the last 50 years don't deserve to become a president for a great nation like Egypt. It's a military rule hidden under civilian rule.
