Just a tip, if your doing this at home, or microwave anything at all, things microwave faster on the edge of the plate vs. the center. dont know why but i can am positive this is the case. So if your trying to destroy your microwave, and your in a hurry. Put the battery in on the edge of the plate. The More You Know!

@h8GW sorry for this ridiculously late reply but, technically in that compound (NiCd) it's not AS poisonous in vapor form, now if they added something gaseous and reactive to the mix the Ni would combine with the other substance leaving pure Cd (gas) which, depending on the isotope, is radioactive. (if this comment is wrong, please don't hate, but it seems mostly accurate)

@MediocreMusicman ok i recycle batteries for a living (basically i work in a factory where we pull them apart and resell the metals.) NiCd means it has both cadmium and nickel plates, you have to heat cadmium to around 609 F+ to get it to melt. and 1413 F+ to get it to vaporize so the odds of it being a major danger to them is kinda low. but they should still be using respirators not dust masks. long term of Cd is cancer the shot term of a high exposure level is death within 72 hours.

I think these vids are fab - but one to do OUTSIDE would be a LiSo2 battery - they are lithium and sulphur dioxide (normally a gas but inside the battery it is liquid as under so much pressure). Should be entertaining but would urge you folks to do it with a nice zoom lens camera outside. Ought to be good fireworks from the lithium and probably a good explosion from the (V. toxic) so2 bursting out.

@FullmetalninjaDR , cadmium is not radioactive, but it is an EXTREMELY toxic heavy metal (no, I'm not talking about rock'n'roll here!), and as such it accumulates in the body and is very hard to go away. Have a look on "itai-itai disease" - there was a serious episode of mass cadmium poisoning in Japan that made thousands of people ill and lasted for decades until they identified the cause. This time the guys risked themselves and the environment with serious chemical contamination.

Also this is a nickle-cadmium battery, and the amount of any chemical to cause the amount of danger as in Japan is far far more than is contained in that battery.
