This had always been my favorite Otis Spann piece. I was blown away after listening to it for years to learn that the title 'Otis in the dark' was given to this piece because when he would only play it with the lights off! Amazing X2!!!!!
I checked out the key of this tune years back and found it to be in B, or it might have been C# (can't remember !!!! ). He has other tracks on the album IN the key of C - so I don't think the track was speeded up or slowed down.
That key is NIGHTMARE to play in, let alone in the dark !!!!!
I don't know what the classical types think of as the pinnacle of piano achievement (Mozart? Rachmaninoff?) but my vote goes to Otis Spann. Thank you, God, for ears.
It's like the left hand plugs along and the right hand thinks 'fuck this' and goes mental.

read in the liner notes of "Otis Spann is the blues" where this song is from that Spann actually recorded this in the dark.
