standard def is still good the government probably got paid by cable companies because many people are switching to cable or paid by tv manufacturers.
...more then likely they probably got bribed somehow to do this, i dont think they would just do this out of the blue either the cable companys or the electronics companys
also standard def is faster than digital, get 2 tv's 1digital(HD) and 1 satndard and compare the times they show something on the same ch, DTV is about 3-10 seconds slow maybe even more but probably later DTV will show real time.

cable and satellite has the same problem with the delay...it takes time for them to convert it to digital signals

cable doesnt matter, you dont get cable tv for free and you pay for it to be digital
