Whenever I hear this song, my snobbish mind goes, "Hey, Columbus was a horrible person who didn't do anything positive" but then I remember poetic license and realize how truly beautiful this song is. I love Suzanne Vega.
And it's not license. She's not proclaiming Columbus a hero or a villain. She's just saying that the world became larger, greater and scarier than anyone had previously thought possible.
The thing I love the most about Suzanne Vega, and I don't mean this in a nasty way, is that she is so famous and so well-respected right across the world, but she still sounds ever so slightly nervous every time she performs. It just shows us that she cares so much about her audience that she doesn't feel big-headed and completely in control when she's on-stage. I'd say that's a true performer - one who still cares about their audience when they're world famous.
I Love Her. Love her. She was the only good thing about the 1980s.
