We kind of have a group like this is St. Louis, but we only meet once a month, I would love to get mine together with more danes...most people have a look of sheer terror on their faces when they see mine coming...he's so sweet and just doesn't understand why they won't play with him...so sad!
There is a group like this in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There are like 30 great danes, and they meet on Saturday mornings at about 10 AM at Lake of the Isles dog park and sometimes the Columbia or Minnehaha dog park too. It's amazing to see a literal ton of dogs romping around. The herding breed dogs try to herd the Danes like cattle when they're all running around. It's so funny.
The name "Grand Danois" was given by French naturalist Comte de Buffon during his travels in Denmark. French were also calling it dogue allemand, or "German Mastiff." Although the Danish made no contribution to the breeds development, for some reason the name stuck.
Danes can be traced back to Denmark. The first Danes were quite different than the ones we see today. I believe it was Hitler who changed their name to Deutsche Dog. The info is very hard to find as there is little evidence, but I remember coming across this info in my research. If any one knows of this I would be very interested. There is no doubt that todays Danes are the refined German descendants.
We have a blue boy and a tan girl, all of your danes are beautiful :-)
