Everyone needs to remember that these tournament are a controlled environment. Mma is the closest sport to real street fighting. But on the street these guys aren't going to trade punches. They are going for the throat eyes and knees. Because if you can't see breath or walk how will you win the fight. And all martial arts have there pros and cons!!
Yeah, in street fights the guys never take turns like they do in the movies, and sparring like this is best suited for the dojo or tournaments. In the streets it gets brutal and close-in VERY quickly...you might get time for one kick, but then it's all happening in your face. These guys were amazing for their speed, style, and well--sheer force, and sparring like this was what they excelled at. It was a different world for martial arts then, my friends. Reminisce and enjoy!
A UFC fighter would definitely own these guys in the ring, but in the streets when the fights are rarely one on one, MMA is just foolish. You really think you can roll around on gravel with 2 of the guy's buddies standing around him and expect to come out on top? Street fighting is all about staying on your feet. BJJ came from JJ and that was developed by samurai that were wearing armor, so they could afford to roll around. If MMA fighters think they can pull that shit in the streets, good luck.
These tournaments featured very heavy contact, and you had to be pretty good to get through one without injury, much less place. Many fighters back in the day used such tournaments to test their overall skills --
I thought it was amazing till I saw Goyce Gracie breaking Karatee,kung-fu, and boxers arms left and right and making them look like they had never fought a day in their lives.

elnyka: thats because they dont need to and probrably do not care. They didnt train all of these years to go in a ring and have a brawl and become famous. I believe the best martial artists in the world do not partake in these MMA events because they do not train in the art for fame, a name, or for a outright brawl. It is deeper in that. I'm just saying back in the senior kenpoist's primes, it would be insane.
Johnny.. these guys arent fake. Tom Kelly (at his prime) would most likely smash most MMAers on the street within seconds. Benny the jet can fight his ass off. Yea, MMA is for the ring. In a street, no regulations, restrictions, or rules. Id put my money on modern hardcore black belts who have trained for 35+ yrs in an art than MMA anyday.
Warrior011, what you say it's possible, but I'd much prefer to hear it from the mouth of one of them. Most of them don't make that claim. They do or the don't, but they don't talk.
This is what REAL fighting is folks.. UFC = Crap to this stuff. This is where the technique comes in BIG time! Ed parker is the man he doesnt even have to fight lol he just does a demonstration and the guy is like "Yea id get owned" LOL
You can ask these guys how they'd do in MMA - they'll tell you, most of them, that it isn't what they train for. Real fighters don't have fake egos (and the people they get in the ring with don't have them for long)
That doesnt look bad ass or hard to me. They are still pulling shots and it still is essentially point fighting, with more contact. Why all the erections ? and boasts that this is better than MMA ??
If you look closely in the beginning before the text *here they come the new..* you can see a long guy on the left with a beard. He was also in the Bruce Lee movie Enter the Dragon. Also seen was Ed Parker, longtime personal trainer of 'King' Elvis.
Believe it or not, this is what point Karate was in the 70's. Full contact karate with pads, more strict rules, and no takedowns hadn't happened yet, and there were busted teeth and broken ribs at nearly every major tournament. Saw some big names in this video. Very cool.
I fought in several Midwestern tournaments as a junior in 1973-5. The rules permitted full body contact, including the groin. Safe-T pads were not yet mandatory. Brown and black belts could make solid facial contact BEFORE Safe-T equipment became mandatory). Lower levels could hit their opponents' heads with controlled contact PAST the area that a hockey mask would cover. I zapped two opponents in the back of the head with my backfist and won points for each ==
I agree, I havent seen anything as hard as this for ages. ufc is a pile of crap with all its rules!!
this is bare knuckle and that quiet scary, it basically well good street martial art fighter. They seem to be very good in them days and bulls of steal.

Footage of the Elvis's karate demonstration was also found, along
with a 16mm color print that contains 8.5 minutes of Bruce Lee
demonstrating and free sparring at the 1967 Ed Parkers Long Beach
International Tournament. Both these finds have never been seen
before. It was decided to not include it in the actual film as Elvis never
did the narration.

These MMA guys can't hold a candle to the raw finesse -skill-and sheer badness of these people.
Check out the beauty at 1:22 a perfect 360 and Urquidez lands it dead on.
