I work for sears and part of my job is to rebuild Craftsman Ratchets. if we can't rebuild it for you we will give you a new one or if you want we will just give you the kit so you can rebuild it yourself depends on which ratchet you have.
What is that aluminum tool sitting on the bench @ 1.40? It has 4 or 5 grooves with a wing and a handle. What is it called and used for? I have one and need to know. Thanks!
@ljchrzan Cool!!! I thought the several coned/springs I have were the only tubing benders I have. Now I know I have another type. Some day I will sell my entire tool collection of Snap-on, MAC, Proto, Craftsman, taps, dies, files, drill bits, punches, body hammers, pry bars, etc.....all USA. Over $80k worth from a retired Pro mechanic. Thanks for the help!!
@outdoorsman310 how do you figer you don't have to buy a nuther one for rest of you life and all my are from yard sell and the are Craftsman and i pad $2.00 for 5 box full of them and didn't pay a dime to fix them,
FYI, you have the pawl upside down in the ratchet. You won't be able to get the cover back on like that. Sears policy says if repairable Sears will repair it or give an already rebuilt ratchet. HOWEVER, if you ask for new, one should be given to you no matter what. If anyone argues with you, tell them to pull up the actual rules and show you in print where it says you have to take rebuilt, because it specifically says to give a new one if asked. Not sure about hometown/hardware stores though.
@HappyKhicken - Thanks! I did end up returning it and they gave me a brandy new one. I more or less took it apart because I wanted to know what was inside :)
@HappyKhicken Hey, I asked for a new one when they gave me a re built one. The dumbass kid would not give a new one to me. I was so close to throwing the ratchet in the guys face it was not funny.
@1972FordF150 Unfortunately, you will get this. I stated the corporate policy, however some stores don't like to follow it. The stores get rated on their percentage of rebuilts vs. new given out. If a store drops on this percentage, they sometimes take steps like not giving new ones to those who want them. If going to the store manager doesn't work, the only thing I can say is to contact corporate or maybe try a different store.
@1972FordF150 Also, please don't get upset with the associate behind the counter. Being one of them, I know what it's like and we only follow the rules sent down from above. It's not our fault. Personally, I feel we should only be responsible to rebuild. If the ratchet is unrepairable, I feel that is negligence and we shouldn't have to replace it. If a ratchet is taken care of and not abused (i.e. used as a hammer or left in dirt), then rebuilding it will be like turning it into a new ratchet.
@HappyKhicken The thing that irritated me was I knew the ratchet was repairable because the little ball in mine broke. But they insisted on giving me a rebuilt one, which is fine but it kind of flustered me because they told me that they have never given free new replacements before. Which is a load of crap because everyone I know has always gotten new ones.
@1972FordF150 I took my click-type torque wrench into the Bowling Green, KY, Sears store. I purchased it in 1980, and as with all Craftsman brand tools, paid a notably higher price than the off brand. The rachet head was not functioning correctly, the torque mechanism was just fine. The store associate told me that design of the rachet had changed since 1980, and they couldn't fix it, and they would not replace it either. He told me to order a kit (i.e., pay for it) and fix it myself.
@Me112233 Well, something like that I could understand. But all I wanted to exchange was a 1/4 inch drive ratchet that was almost brand new but the little ball for the rotational selector broke somehow.
@1972FordF150 I think you missed my point. I paid for the "lifetime warranty" though a decidely higher price than similar "limited warranty" products of that day and age. Sears then doesn't honor the warranty in any way. That is THE point ot the previous comment (and to tell the world about it).
@Me112233 Yeah now that I read it again I did kind of miss the point. I think if you paid for the "lifetime warranty" they should replace it no matter what if the design has changed or not. It's still a warranty and they should honer it.
The ratchet repair kit you have 43447 is for the 1/2 teardrop ratchet with the oil hole (Model 44985). Your ratchet appears to be a 44814 ratchet and requires the rebuild kit number 43444. They are pretty common, and if you do make it to a Sears, they will give you the kit for free. A few will ever rebuild the ratchet for you. Recently, Ace Hardware started selling Craftsman and may be able to give you the right kit, repair, or replace the ratchet for you. Kmart as well.
Put wheel bearing grease in the mechanism it makes it incredibly smooth, especially the 1/2". Mine is butter smooth, now better than my Craftsman 60 tooth thin profile 1/2".
@redneckrollercoast1 - Sears doesn't give you a "new" ratchet. They give you new/refurbed guts just like I was demonstrating. Been there. Done that. It's easier to ship it right to my house. Cheaper then driving all the way to the store (45+mins from me each way)
@happyjellyfish2008 - I bought it. It was like $5. I did it partially because I wanted to see what was inside. I did end up taking it back to sears (45+ min ride each way)
i had a ratchet with a broken ball and i had one with stripped teeth on the ratchet mechanism so i just too the parts and switched them and now i have one nice one instead of two broken ones
@whocaresnow2 Just found the answer to my own question - searching sears.com the they technically state that if a ratchet breaks, they will only provide you with a repair kit as shown in this video. The only way they will replace a ratchet is if the Ratchet handles that are broken or bent.
Thats according to Sears.com website. Maybe if you walk into a Sears a not caring employee will just hand you a new ratchet, but technically according to Sears.com they are not supposed to.
Good pointers. That sucks you got the wrong part to fix it. That is the problem with ordering stuff of the internet, you don't always get what you think your getting.
Yeah if you pull that ball bearing and rocking arm you have one shitty time getting it in without the proper tool! The screwdriver will not work!

You know this tool has Unlimited Lifetime Warranty. Right?
I don't understand why you had to order part and repair this yourself.
No sears store around your house?
I just took mine to sears hardware, and they repaired it on the spot with rebuild kit.
Last time, they just gave me whole new ratchet. Nothing was wrong with the handle it self. Guess it depends you who you have at the counter. :)
