Nearly half the population of Detroit are unable to read, research has revealed.
The study, released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund, found that 47 per cent of adults in the Motor City are ‘functionally illiterate’.
That means they struggle to complete daily tasks such as reading a bus timetable, filling out a job application form or reading a label on a medicine bottle.
You couldn't pay me any amount of money to teach in Detroit. It has to be one of the toughest jobs in the world! And now those teachers are being attacked from a highly-financed right-wing network of organizations and corporations. THEY will be the ones who will be addressing these problems directly every day, with now 60 or more students to one classroom. Meanwhile the right-wing lobbyists will be sitting in their leather chairs in Washington smoking their cigars. I stand with the teachers!!!!
The mistakes of this district. Tsk Tsk. Was this the doing of unions? Did unions issue construction contracts? Did unions hire all those employees? Did unions pay all those health care benefits for ghost employees? Did unions mismanage budgets? Did unions hire Steve Conn? Did unions continue to give Steve Conn passing employee evaluations year after year after year? Did unions prevent this mother from speaking proper English in this interview? Hmm...
neo-marxists and unions have to create those downtrodden masses, carefully nourished with ignorance, hate, hopelessness, to agitate to uprising somehow.
I disagree that it is our socialist school system that has failed the kids. The best education systems in the world are in socialist countries. I think American's fail themselves and blame it on others. Instead of personal accountability, it's easier to say it's someone else's fault. Let's play the great American blame game. God forbid we turn off the tv and take accountability for our own children!
@TheCrazyCatLady83 Parents are limited with voice. Private schools and homeschooling rank far above public schools. Certainly parents should hold the tools, but in the case of public education and public daycares the tool is constantly trying to control the parents. Parental involvement is at an all time low, and that is the very idea of the public system. My exchange student was forced to register for the hell-hole. He arrived laughing at the idea that we homeschool, and left praising us.
@TheCrazyCatLady83 THE best educational system in the world IS IN AMERICA! Just as some of the worst. Did you watch the video? YES, I will blame the corruption on others-THE CORRUPT people Robert Bobb tells you about. THE MAYOR who is in prision. Don't lay that on me. I have not failed, nor has anyone I know. I help the local charter school. I help the schools I went to. Listen at 8:55. Listen at 9:50. That is who is to blame, not me.
@TheCrazyCatLady83 However in Sweden, which you may consider a socialist country has school choice. Since 1992 they implemented school vouchers where state money goes to the parents, which in turn they chooses whatever school that their child goes to whether its a public school, charter school, private school, home school,or parochial school. However we cant have that because of the ACLU who is currently suing Arizona for trying to implement the same programs that Sweden has done.
I it sad, but not at all surprising that a socialist, "narcissist" union agitator, would be fighting improvements in a failing school system where 76% of the students fail. It is not surprising that the same city would elect Obama's friend Kwame Kilpatrick as Mayor. It is not surprising that Kilpatrick was put in prision. What is surprising is that we want a socialist marcissist community organiser as President.
Co-sign w/ EchoMike03 about Steve Conn. Robert Bobb is working on solutions while Conn is griping because his check is being threatened. As Robert Bobb said, "...it's time for the adults to grow up. Is it about the children or is it about them?" Powerful stuff.
6:54 This numbnut says that Robert Bobb "is there to destroy education in this city."
1.) Everytime a leftist/statist says anything this outrageous, and it happens all the time, it IMMEDIATELY discredits that person from engaging in rational thoughtful debate.
2.) I hate to break it to this asshole, but at less that 25% graduation rate, it would appear to me that the educational system was already destroyed.
But as long as he is collecting his VERY large paycheck he doesn;t see any problems
Re-instate Bible reading and prayer in the public schools. This will work toward alleviating corruption at the top also. 1) Thou shalt have no other gods before me, Ex 20:3 ... Get rid of unions and have competition - pay for performance - if your students don't get good grades, you're out of there.
Oh come on. Everyone knows what is wrong with Detroit. But no one is willing to say it.

8:15 Camera shot of the Detroit Schoolboard.
I'll be accused of it anyway so here it goes...
Anyone else notice that it appears that every single member of this board is black?
How many wanna take a wager as to how many of those folks vote for hard leftitst Democrats, and have for the last 30-40 years?
Liberals have controlled the school system and they have fialed.
It's time to let the adults run the show for a while.
By the way I'd love to see thier paychecks as well.
