What did you use for the spring? I am well familiar with the making of a traditional trebuchet, but it seems much more efficient to use a spring, I just wouldn't know where to buy one that works good or how to attach it. Any suggestions?

that's a catapult, not a trebuchet, trebuchets use gravity and weight to power them, catapults use springs or other mechanical means of storing energy, completely different.

Springs is the only way to do small scale ones.I eventually(2 months) built a proper big counter weight one with a 9.4 metre arm and a half a ton of stone in a piece of old trawler netting

technically its only a trebuchet if it uses counterweights and gravity to swing the arm, not springs. This is more of a caterpult than a trebuchet, but saying that, it does work very well!!!

There were four garage door springs on it, and it unlatches because the sling is only held on one end, the other end is looped over a piece of metal at the top of the arm. When the arm reaches a certain point the loop slips off of the metal and releases the ball.
