I don't normally like Joe Buck, and I don't necessarily like him with this call, it was just what the call meant, to all Cards fans. Not only about what happened, but an awesome way to pay homage to the late great Jack Buck.
Wait, some people actually like Joe buck and his monotone-bored-to-death announcing? Buck always sounds like he'd rather be somewhere else than getting paid millions to watch baseball and football games.
I'm a Twins fan. So '91 has a huge place in my heart. How big? The moment Freese hit that tater, I was shouting "and we'll see ya tomorrow night" right in front of my Dallas-born co-worker. I almost took a clipboard to the forehead.
Classic call!! Father and son 20 years later, I get chills listening to it. Jack Buck called Kirby's walk-off October 26th, 1991 and Joe called Freese's walk-off on October 27th, 2011... 20 years and a day later.. Wow simply amazing.. As a Yankee fan and baseball lover
nothing beats this. the best announcer in baseball paired with his son calling one of the best moments in baseball. I get tears just thinking about it.
Uh, excuse me but Time McCarver is the WORST color man in the history of baseball. Been wondering for years what kind of pix he has to keep the job. Must be good ones.
And PS I agree Joe Buck haters are clueless/ he's great/ he connects us to our past/ tradition- and nepotism gets you the interview folks/ it doesn't keep you employed- that is on your talent alone. Joe buck owes no apologies to anyone - he's great/ loved the call.
Could care less about these 2 teams/ I'm a white sox fan/ but i love baseball and the playoffs- and as a dad of 3 young boys - hard not to get choked up on this one. The sheer odds stacked against these 2 calls happening in this manner would have to just blow ...your....mind. Chilling. Have heard much about Jack thru a guy named John OLeary- you should read his story. Jack Buck was a great guy. And most guys like him raise pretty good kids so Joe must be alright himself. A really cool moment in
@Sentenza233 No, I´m the ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD who hasn´t heard Jack Buck´s call of Gibson´s home run or his call of Ozzie Smith´s home run. What a dumb question. I know for a fact you´re not old enough to have heard those two calls live. You know how I know? Because you picked the only two calls of Jack Buck's that you've ever heard. Name ONE other Jack Buck call you've heard live. ONE.
If only the game wasn't rained out on the 26th, then it would have been 20 years TO THE DAY of that memorable walk off and this modern walk off with the same epic broadcasting call that father & son made.
I knew around the 9th inning that if it came to a walk off HR for the Cardinals, that Joe would make the same call, an homage to his dad. I could see it coming a mile away with a walk off ... just had no idea it would actually happen.
if the cardinals had adam wainright who's injured the rangers would have been swept. wainright is the cards best pitcher and arguably the best pitcher in the n.l and also a 20 gm winner.
Coleman in San Diego is great as well. I miss Bob Murphy doing Mets game, his call of the Buckner ball is much better than Scully's (no knock on Scully)
As a die hard Twins wonk, Puck's walk off is my favorite sports moment ever, even better than the following night when the Twins won it all as crazy as that sounds. I loved what Joe did on the Freese bomb. I hope the Card's go on to win this thing, talk about an improbable team just like the Twins were back in the day. Just two points:
1) Don't quite understand the Joe Buck hate? I think he's great with baseball, don't care as much for him with football.
@toeazy34 The reason I don't like Joe Buck is because he is so monotoned. Nelson Cruz' walk off grand slam was called like he was freakin' yawning. He makes good calls sometimes. Tyree's catch was a good call. The touchdown that followed was a good call. THIS was a good call. But for every great call he has made, he's made ten shitty ones.
@toeazy34 Why Joe Buck hate? He sucks at broadcasting, he's completely emotionless and boring (and ruined a ton of great sports moments) and his gotten as far as he did solely on his dad's success.
Joe and Jack might be in different classes, but they share one trait at least: a velociraptor could walk onto the field, on fire, singing a Lady Gaga song, and either of the Buck's would call it with the same monotone, unexcitable, stiff commentary.
Joe's no idiot his dad was one of the greatest announcers of all time and knowing his legacy is based on that man he will always go to his dad! That said It's amazing to hear father and son doing the same work!
@stearnsybears What about anything I said implies sour grapes? I think he's overrated. That's all. More power to him to be not very good at something but still have a super successful career with it. Anyway, that's a silly comparison. How many people in the history of Earth have a statue outside Busch Stadium? 1, 5, 10?
I grew up a Cards fan and there are very few men who can be mentioned in the same breath as Jack Buck. I love Joe but he doesn't hold a candle to his old man, but who does? Vin Scully is the only one left of the old guard. Great way for the game to end last night!
Joe Buck has the impossible task....he is better than most, but can't do it better than his dad did...its still pretty cool to have the legacy of Jack Buck live on tonight in a huge Cardinals win. It just felt right.
@ZoopSoulTheSequel His real problem is his color analysts (McCarver and Aikman) and Fox over-producing its broadcasts. I've never really had a problem with Joe myself.
I knew that if the Cardinals were to win, whether it was the way they did or in a simple, non-dramatic 5-2 win, Joe Buck would say that line.

And how many more amazing sports moments will be crippled by Joe Buck's apathetic robot announcing?
