Many Progressives left the Party in 1912 with the Bull Moose campaign by Teddy Roosevelt, and these joined the Democrats by 1932 when Franklin Roosevelt became President. And the Southern Stragtegy saw most racists in the Democrat party switching Republican.

After civil rights legislation passed, many southern democrats (Dixiecrats) switched sides to the republicans and for a good reason too. They were against civil right pure and simple. JFK couldn't get anything accomplished during his term because even though the Democrats controlled the House and Senate, the real power was controlled by the Southern Democrats who opposed all of Kennedy's civil rights measures, and everything else besides. it took Kennedy's death to get the 1964 cvil rights act passed by the persuasive powers of Lyndon Johnson. Im not so sure it was a good thing because today we have Affirmative Action that institutes Reverse Discrimination and that is wrong!

Accusing the Klan of being liberal Democrats is ridiculous. Liberals support civil rights, equal rights, womens' rights, gay rights, federalism social programs and are generally anti-war. You are 100% right that Republicans were more for women's suffrage, because prior to FDR, the Republican party was the liberal reformist party. There is an almost complete consensus amongst American historians that back up what Cenk said. Eisenhower actually initiated the Civil Rights Act of 1957. But he left office in '61 and the Act of '64 was actually first proposed by JFK. Both presidents were motivated by politics though, not morals

They're actually correct on Helms opposing civil rights. It's true he wasn't yet a senator at that point, he called the 1964 Civil Rights Act "the single most dangerous piece of legislation ever introduced in the Congress".
He also migrated from the Democrats to the Republicans, as Strom Thurmond did (albeit before joining the senate).

Actually, because of the disadvantaged socological origins of colored people, those who have the qualifications in question would have had to overcome more to attain them, and therefore has demonstrated a greater ability than somebody of a higher socioeconomic level, and therefore a higher level of competence.
In other words, they have achieved more to earn their qualification.

OMGF that's a awesome Family Guy quote, and it's so true. My friend and I took a trip there once (we're from Illinois) and stopped at a gas station. I was having trouble getting my debit card to work a the pump and the attendant came out to help me. As he came over he lit up a cigarette and proceeded to pump my gas with his cig hanging out of his mouth. I was so shocked, I could just stand there speechless. It seriously felt like we were in a foreign country.

My favorite part is when she accuses democrats of 'revisionist history' right before she revises history....
I'm 90% certain that the real republican strategy is to accuse democrats of what republicans are doing, that way democrats are too scared to call out the republicans on their bullshit.
For example, during the elections
reps "youre playing the race card!!!"
dems "wtf.... YOU just played the race card!!!"
reps "SEE? Why are they so scared of people knowing that they play the race card!!"

The reasoning is simple.
The reasoning is, because THEY think a certain way, then EVERYBODY thinks in this way.
So if you are a racist, you believe EVERYBODY is racist.
If you hate the opposition, the opposition must hate YOU.
If you lie and cheat and steal, then the Opposition must be lying, cheating thieves as well.
THAT is why Republicans are always accusing the Democrats and the Democrats are always giving Republicans the benefit of the doubt.

What these ignorant republicans don't know is that party alignment hasn't been constant since the dawn of time. After civil rights legislation passed, many southern democrats (Dixiecrats) switched sides to the republicans and for a good reason too. They were against civil right pure and simple. They were racists and their legacy still lives throughout the south.

It's a matter of historical fact that the conservative Dixiecrats transferred their party affiliation to the GOP in response to the Great Society and civil rights laws. That's what the southern GOP is all about nowadays.

If you check the congressional record you will see that MORE Democrats voted for the Civil Rights legislation and Voting Rights Legislation than did republicans at the time. Not surprising in the slightest that the con-servatives like to con people into thinking they are on the peoples side when the record shows otherwise. Love war, against scientific fact and advancement, no regulation for corruption, increase the wage gap so the working class become more like serfs, demonize anything remotely considered liberal, fair or equal. The cons have conned people out of quality of life preferring that only the rich have a good one.

Certainly the Southern Democrats were racist back in the day. But they were also conservative. Thats why people like Strom Thurmond of South Carolina and many other conservative Democrats became Republicans when the Northern liberals took over the Democratic Party. Thats why now the Democrats are nowadays the party of the people!

I don't necessarily disagree with you, though I definitely am not in complete agreement. It's just the old formal equality vs. equality of opportunity debate. In assuring equality of opportunity for black people, some white people are going to get burned. Fair? No definitely not, but neither is the alternative or black people having to wait around until some racist organization or employers decide to give them jobs. It's crappy all around, so choose your evil.

JFK couldn't get anything accomplished during his term because even though the Democrats controlled the House and Senate, the real power was controlled by the Southern Democrats who opposed all of Kennedy's civil rights measures, and everything else besides. it took Kennedy's death to get the 1964 cvil rights act passed by the persuasive powers of Lyndon Johnson. Im not so sure it was a good thing because today we have Affirmative Action that institutes Reverse Discrimination and that is wrong!

Reverse discrimination is just trying to play the victim. While affirmative action helped bring power and opened doors to the real victims. Though statistical figures in income and poverty rates are still far from reaching a equilibrium. Affirmative action as well as desegregation has helped America become a more open society.

When Harry Truman said the Democratic party should support civil rights in 1948, the Southern Dem's, most notable, Strom Thurmond split from the party.

That's true but the Southern Democrats were states' rights conservatives. They went Republican between 1964-1968 after the progressive Northern Democrats signed the CRA. Accusing the Klan of being liberal Democrats is ridiculous. Liberals support civil rights, equal rights, womens' rights, gay rights, federalism social programs and are generally anti-war. The Klan is opposed to all of those positions.

You're hilariously wrong. To free the slaves is an inherently liberal policy. Anything that radical is liberal, by definition. Conservatism, by definition, is a preservation of tradition and status quo, or did you already know that and are being facetious? Those who are racist are conservative, because they want things to either stay the way they are, or to go back to the way things used to be. Liberals, however, always fight for change, or "progress."
