  • Until Wikipedia came along, I thought the song was about a dancing woman. Happy Australia day from California!

  • Is this the recording of JW at the 2000 olympics? It sounds like it and i remember it well. Still gives me goosebumps 11 years later.

  • Beautiful song, and I'm from Texas.

  • Best Aussie song EVER

  • Love my country so proud to be an AUSSIE

  • haha wie listened to that in our english lesson :P just awesome lol

  • great song!

  • OI OI OI!!!!!!!

  • aussie aussie aussie

  • Unfortunately I recognized too late, what for a beautiful land Australia is, with warmhearted people, free and overwhelming. Now I am too old, to become an australian. But every time when I am listening to J. Williamson, especially with this song, my eyes get wet and I wish to be there. In Germany we have absolutely no comparable national feeling, casted in a such affecting song.

You can be proud to be an Australian. Be careful with your country.

  • John Williamson is the only person that is any good at singing this great song! good on you Jonny!

  • @ozyscott Tom Waits?

  • someone needs to put together a REAL Australian anthems playlist, post it on the web so that the world knows exactly what they're missing. Australia through and through!!!!

  • Thank you very much for this!

  • I love this song, I love Australia, I love it! I want to live in Australia later - the best country for me on the whole world!

    Who'll come a waltzing-matilda with me?

    <33333

  • Yes, this is true blue Australian & it always makes me choked up when I hear it.

I am proud to be Australian & have the opportunity to enjoy everything that Australia offers.

    Good on ya' mate. ]

  • Amazing!!!

  • We are using this in are assembly. ms age 10

  • Everytime i hear this song my heart drops, my eyes tear up and i feel so very proud to be an Australian. And i have no doubt that any Aussie, anywhere in the world would stop in their tracks and take the time to listen to this song and i am sure it would really make them miss home.

This is by far the best version of this song. It does not seem right if it is sung by a woman or anyone that is not Australian. But that is just my opinion and my take on the his song.

  • Very clear voice, easy to hear the story. Enjoyable.

  • There is no greater song in the English language...

  • Who thinks this should be Australia's National Anthem :)

  • As a Yank, we sing this song in grade school. I've always loved it. I have family that live in Perth and, while I love America and, should I have to live elsewhere on this beautiful planet, I would not think twice about living in the amazing country of Australia. The people, the land...it is a most wonderful place. Simply wonderful.

  • @jgreen913 I love Australia. Proud to be an aussie. Gotta say, our people are very friendly. I've been overseas, and there is just something different about us aussies :)

  • @wabbie88 Yes, all the Aussies were exceptionally nice to all migrants when I lived in Perth in the 60ies as a child. But I don't think they were special or different, just nice people as you would find them in other parts of the world as well.

  • @wabbie88 I've met quite a few Aussies here in Texas. Most of them were horse trainers. I liked them all, and they seemed to like us. One Aussie gal was leaving for home and said she wished she had a rattlesnake tail to take home. I had quite a few, so i gave her one, and she gave me a peck on the cheek. Pretty good trade I thought. I think Aussies and Texans are quite a bit alike. Best friend you can have, unless you piss them off!

    Keep safe.

  • @jgreen913 What a shame that you "yanks" have got such a lot of influence on Australia. When I lived in Perth in the 60ies as a child, it was still very british. I don't fancy the british way of life, but nevertheless , it seems to me that there was a little more culture then. I wouldn't want to live in Austalia now as everything is too "americanized". I prefer living in Europe where people do a little more thinking.

  • Yeah this is a great song however why on earth do the commies connect with these freedom songs?? God bless our freedoms under our institution of monarchy! and it if ends god help us all!

  • Aussie for life!!

  • I found this song,my social studies teacher showed us this i almost cryed casue it was a memorie vid. of the crodile hunter who got killed of the sting ray OF ALL when he handled crocs and snakes...wow WE MISS HIM we whatch his vids. in social studies

  • i was at the Deni ute muster last year and John Williamson played this song. 20,000 people also sang along. it was a proud moment for me as a proud Aussie

  • 7 people need to be shot! Proud to be an Aussie

  • Always loved this song!

  • love this song.

  • i want to go back...

  • proud aussi love the song

  • J'adore ces voix graves et même rugueuses... ! ♥

  • Waltzing Matilda is about as Aussie you can get. It is always sung with pride and paasion for our home and we belt it out as loud as we can. It should be our national anthem hands down

  • Relatively certain that this version was recorded at the Bledisloe Cup in Sydney, in front of a world record rugby union crowd of 110,000. My favourite part is when the crowd join in!

If I remember correctly, this was either the match we lost when Lomu scored a late try or (as I prefer to think) it was John Eales' last match when Toutai Kefu scored the match winner in stoppage time...

    Go Wallabies!

  • God bless Australia

  • I did not want to hurt anybody , only wish to say , I LOVE AUSTRALIA , even I wass never there , did not had the intention to hurt people ... like you all guys !

  • @FrancoiseVandeWalle - Thank you for your kind sentiments. You should come and visit us sometime. We're a pretty easy going bunch of people and we make a point of making our visitors welcome, especially ones who seem to like us. How did you develop this passion for Australia? I must admit I'm intrigued.

  • @Biggus63 Dear Mr .or Miss . Once by chance I met a an Australian man on the P.C. sharing the same love for animals and nature in the world ... this man lives with his family in the deep south of Australia . So he told me a lot about the country and I fell in love with the land , even I never saw it in my life !!.Maybe next year I wiil visit this family because they are SO friendly , kind and wise ... And I love the music and everything about you people !!! Love from Belgium.

  • @Biggus63 I also like to thank your people (I was not born then ) , to help us in the second world war , my parents had deep respect for your soldiers !!! So far from their homeland and fighting here for freedom ! Last Christmass I was in FLANDERS FIELD to visit the graves of all soldiers who died there and we still honour them .

  • @FrancoiseVandeWalle - It's very kind of you to honour our dead in Flanders, and your high opinion of us is flattering, but really we are just ordinary people living our lives and trying to be happy like everybody else. If you're ever in Perth, Western Australia feel free to contact me. My uncle is a farmer and I could arrange for you to spend some time in the countryside to see it for yourself. Oh, and I'm a Mr, but you can call me Richard. Bye!

  • @Biggus63 I know Richard that you live your life like everybody else ....but maybe it was also a sort of reaction from me because some comments about your people and country are very disgusting ! They do not know what they are talking about ! I am a very emotional person and I do not like people without respect ! When I have the time and the means , I will accept your kind invitation ! Thank you for asking anyway . Bye and greetings from Belgium !

  • @FrancoiseVandeWalle thats very nice

  • @hannah7630 Thank you dear , makes me feel good ! Take care ...

  • @noneyageorge85 You disgust me so much to even discuss your errors.

  • ah yes, australias national song - about a homeless suicidal livestock theif... :)

  • i'd like to go to australia soon, i'm only afraid that they will deny me because i'm a felon. of course, that would be kind of hypocritical, since the nation (at least tasmania) was built on the worst of worst (or at least the most irish) of criminals from england. if they don't allow me there, i'll request that they change their official slogan to "sorry- no more criminals. we've had enough"

  • @noneyageorge85 You start by saying you want to come here then you say shit about convicts, make your mind up fuckhead.

  • @noneyageorge85 I hope they will refuse you to , people like you are not educated enough to visit the Aussies , hard working people , only in the news when their land has to fight nature violence , not because they make WAR like in so many other country's in the world . Do not like your double vision !

  • Don't forget the fffffflies!!!! The west is best ...see Perth first....when you go east you will be homesick for Perth x♥

  • John williamson version of Matilda makes the hairs on the back of my eyeballs stand up and sway in time. Long live the Outback.

  • @WEBFOOT2OF1 Never was there , but I have a friend who lives there and I adore his way of speaking with love about the deep south of AUSTRALIA , his homeland ! And he has also respect for the homeland from others to . He has send me the beautiful song , "And the band played Waltzing Mathilda " performed by J. Williamson ! LOVE YOU AUSSIES !!!! XXX

  • @FrancoiseVandeWalle Glad you liked the comment Francoise. You really should take a look. Try the poems of 'Banjo' Patterson, he was the guy that probably wrote waltzing matilda. Gotta go and comb my eyes now,see you there maybe? Stay in touch.

  • @WEBFOOT2OF1 Thank you for your reply . I surely will try to find the poems of "Banjo" Patterson . My friend from Australia has send me also a beautiful poem written by HENRY LAWSON , A man I did not knew ! Shame ! He wrote wonderful poem ! I loved to read this . We here in Europe did not learnt at school enough of Australian masters in using the words in such a beautiful way ....

  • @FrancoiseVandeWalle Henry Lawson is good, which poem did you receive from your friend in Australia? Sorry to hear about your husband, such a shame. Thank god for poetry and good friends and memories, aye?

  • @WEBFOOT2OF1 It was just a part of a poem I think .Started with the words " By homestead , hut and shearing shed ...." and ended " In the never, never land " .

Yes WEBFOOT , good and honest friends are a treasure ...

  • I have been to Australia ten times, almost moved down under!

Been to the Alice ( Springs) twice.

The culture of the outback is so similar to western US or Canada;I think that makes it so appealing to Canadians and Americans.

John Williamson is a really great Country and Western Aussie musician!

  • I'm American but I've always wanted to live in Australia. I have nothing but respect for the Aussie people

  • yes, it is

  • yeah

  • Australian and Proud :)

  • what is a jumbuck?

  • @kuska1996 a lamb

  • Yes Silas?

  • we will miss you Steve but your memories will stay thank you for your good work.

  • love this version

  • the scenery is to die for !! proud to be Australian!!

  • proud to be an aussie

  • @killyskillys same

  • @killyskillys Go aussies XD im an aussie..

  • John's interpretation typifies what being an Aussie means to a genuine Aussie...His version brings a smell of gum trees and an appreciation of what we have here...It's precious and we should all cherish our land and it's history...Let's hope future generations maintain our uniqueness but not overlook new arrivals who wish to share and become part of a great nation

  • I never tried listening to this song ever... I had no idea how haunting it was. This really is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written. Why isn't this your National Anthem?

  • @MEATYOKERRable -we had a referendum about that when we changed our national anthem from 'God save the queen' about 20 years ago but some people thought a song about a sheep thief was inappropriate for our anthem but 'Waltzing Matilda' is the soul of Australia, have no doubt about it. Cheers from Oz!

  • Why does it say Australien on the map? =/

  • @Ajayy007 Its a German map

  • @Ajayy007 LOL

  • reminds me of bluegrass from West Virginia .

  • God, this song stands for joy, kindness and sympathy! Australia in our hearts.

  • Going to Sydney is like going to china, Vietnam,INDIA,& AFGHANISTAN ALL IN ONE DAY AFTER MY LAST VISIT THERE I'LL NEVER GO BACK THAT PLACE IS NO LONGER AUSTRALIA.....

  • @tinhemp, @ozzyguy69: hey, let's just enjoy a great cover of a great song without fighting :-) The "P.O.M.E." acronym is a folk etymology anyway; no-one's really quite sure where the word "pom" came from. And speaking as a half-aussie, half-pom, currently living in the states, I'm not sure where I'd rather be... all beautiful countries!

  • @timhemp Dude. I'm from America, and I spent a month in Australia. I've also been to England. If there was any place I'd rather be, it's Australia. If anything, they're not arrogant. Not bad for a penal colony from your country, eh? Cheerio, old boy!

  • my yank alarm went off.

  • only real australians know how good of a song this is and what it means to be an australian we truely are the best country, not like the us where there are 50 different lines seperating us all but 5

  • It´s a great Song. I realy love it.

Best regards from Bavaria in Germany to Australia.

  • I love this song!!! Great video!! Thanks a lot for sharing!!!

  • The first picture says it all. Damn... someone get me a ticket to Australia, is there an airport on Uluru? :-)

  • If one wants to see Australia the first thing on the list shouldn't be Melbourne, not even Sydney. The real Australia is not in the cities but in the desert and in the bush. Who agrees?

  • Bloody hell, i totally agree! I've been to the outback. True australia can only be found out there

  • Yeah outback and the bush is my home. Though if you had to see a city in australia i would go to the most decent one which is Perth

  • @ballagyuszi It's true all over the world. I have yet to see a city that truly showed the culture of the land.

  • For sure.

  • @ballagyuszi I absolutely agree!!! Especially, one shouldn't miss Tasmania!!!

  • @ballagyuszi agreed!!!!!!

  • @ballagyuszi Mate i live 1 hr south of sydney in Wollongong and it aint near rural enough for me. put me in the outback anyday

  • @ballagyuszi That's the first place I'm going when I get to Australia is the Outback. Coming from a guy who likes wide open spaces, bayous and not that much cities and touristy shit, it looks like home to me . . . all I gotta do is go.

  • @ballagyuszi too right mate, u can shove ya cities up ya arse

  • @ballagyuszi

Henry Lawson, and nobody else. The bush and the desert suck. There's nothing there and it's boring as fuck.

  • @ballagyuszi The first place I would go is to a billabong with a coolabah tree next to it. I'd boil some billy and hope to catch a jumbuck down for a drink. Hopefully I wouldn't run afoul of a squatter.

  • @ballagyuszi I DO AGREE !!! AND I LOVE ADELAIDE and GOOLWA , were a dear friend of me is born !

  • and it ain't germany, its DEUTSCHLAND

  • gday cobbers love the song!

  • Ich have 10 jahre in Innsbruck gelebt und jetzt bin ich in australien

  • wieso bist du weggeogen

  • Matilda is my name!! ;DDDDD

  • OMG :D

  • Australia simply put is the greastest country on earth

  • Official hymn of the 1st Marine Division I do believe
