I've watched a couple of documentaries and done some reading about this accident. The pilots were seriously screw-jobbed by both American Airlines and Douglas and aren't to blame. There was shitty design and shitty maintenance that combined to cause the accident. Sully and Jesus combined at the controls couldn't have avoided the crash.
FINALLY.....tomorrow (5.25.11) is the 32nd anniversary of this crash and they are FINALLY buidling a Memorial to all that were killed on this which is still the worse airline crash in US history.
@tinghaling Yes indeed wanker, its full of Americans, they burned nice crispy. I am a little disapointed when the Seagulls and crows didnt come and eat all nicely cooked flesh. Maybe because Americans are not as edible as bunch of crispy cooked passenger from Air New Zealand that crashed on the south pole.
I could have been a part of history but am glad I wasn't. I had to choose between this flight and the exact same one the week before, to go out and visit my dad in Calif. I chose the week before to avoid the holiday weekend crowds. Could have been the same plane I was on though, owing to the airplanes keeping the same planes on the same routes for maintenance purposes. RIP.
I was eight years old, I remember that day! Ill never forget it! Today, I go past that site down Touhy ave when I go to my side job. I cant pass by there without thinking of that crash. I also pass by the runway. When Im stopped at the traffic light, I just picture how that plane went over the intersection Im sitting at and where it plunged. Today supposedly there is a memorial marking the crash site. I have not seen it.
American Airlines Has Had Bad Reputation With Therye Aircrafts I Beleive Some One Should Put American Airlines Out Of Business There To Stuck Up To Buy New Planes!
The plane lost left engine, but on this video, even the right engine is on incorrect angel, when the plane tips on her left wing? Even the tail part of fuselage seems to brake of with the tail engine before impact?
if the plane had no fuel onboard though.... there might be chances of survival however no human body can survive the massive explosion so all 271 and 2 perished in the crash
as said one other person had said, the dumb ass ground crw used a fork lift to change the engine, cracking the mounts, they did not use the manufacter's instuctions just took a short cut. Not wise at all. It is too bad we need to make mistakes to prevent it from happening again.
upon rotation, the pilots want to climb and seperate that very large aircraft from the ground as quickly as possible. leveling off at 100ft would have done no good whatsoever, as trees, houses, buildings, poles, terrain, etc... would have been waiting just clear of the airport area. he had no other choice in this matter but to do what he "normally" would be doing, and that is to CLIMB the aircraft. as they say in aviation, "Altitude is your friend" such a tragedy though.

Why the hell did the pilot raise the altitude to 300 ft. If he had just kept it at 50-100ft then people would have had a chanse to get out alive, And why didnt he bring the plane back around!!!!! Damb that was an idiot flight crew!!!!!!!!!!!!!
imagine vc sentedo em uma poltrona quando ouve um estouro olha na janela e não ve a turbina só fumaça preta então o avião começa a virar quando ve vc está de cara com o chão credo em cruz!
I remember seeing that photo on the front page of the newspaper in '79. There weren't video cameras everywhere like nowadays, so it was unusual to see an image like that. It really made my blood run cold.
@IceBreaker832 no they did service but as they took off the engine, they stressed the main parts that hold the engine on. so that had caused the crash was bad maintenance

I heard that al-Qaeda refuses to hijack DC-10s for suicide missions because they are too dangerous to fly.

The left wing lost hydraulic fluid causing the wing slats/flaps to retract -- thus losing lift.
The right wing maintained lift thereby causing the plane to roll to one side.

The left engine fell off or as the pilots thought 'failed' but at 1:37 the right engine throttle is retarded.

looks like there were 2 major design flaws in the hydraulic systems layout of the DC 10..
1).they did not only NOT provide 'failsafe' back-up,
2) vital hydraulic lines were in potentialy 'vulnerable' areas of the aircraft,

Was this the one where it was proved that the idle-arsed ground crews had used a forklift to change the engine and had strained the securing pins?
