The ignorance of the people who are "not effected" by this is disgusting. For starters- look at what these people have... very little. So, the argument that they should have been saving to begin with is bullshit. They probably didn't make enough to save for a disaster like this. Addiotionally, they weren't going out and buying flat screens and fancy cars. They're just simply trying to buy food and medicine to live.
The argument may be made that if they were struggling before, they should have moved onto better jobs. To that I say that: many of these people have been with the company for more than a decade... they were living comfortably (maybe not wealthy) before the crisis. To argue that they should have been looking for jobs when they found out can be diminished if you understand that very few companies are hiring; they can't afford to pay their employees either!
The News media is supposed to tell us what is going on. This video is a good look at what is happening, but I ask what about telling teas people Why this is happening. All this is part of a big plan and People should be told. Tell people about the Fatima message. It is not a secret anymore.
Heres the point. All you knew back in May this was going to happen. You should have been looking for a job then. But hey, Obama will help you. an if your son dropped out of college, thats his fault. There a plenty of help out there for college students. DHL will go back to CVG and wish they had never left!!!!!!!!
I'm not an Obama fan either, but has it ever occured to you that some of these people did know what was going on since May and decided to look for jobs then? Only, they had to sail the DHL boat until it sank because nobody else was hiring. The problem for these people is not the DHL plant closing down by itself, but being unable to find other employment.
I work at ABX in Wilmington OH. for over 15 years....it is sad that such a strong company at one time has come to this. I miss all of the people that I have gotten to know over the years there and want to offer them my prayers and hope of a better tomorrow. I know it is not easy and good jobs or any jobs for that matter, are hard to come by. Stay close to your friends, family and loved ones. I wish you all to have a better tomorrow. I miss you all.
I am laid off now also, and it is a hard thing to deal with. I know at times we all feel like just a number at the place we work. But for all the people at ABX, they were more than just a number to me.There were so many good people there that I had the pleasure to get to know. Now we are a growing number of the unemployed and my heart goes out to each and every one of you. Take care and keep your heads up.
if you have your family and respect you can do it money is only good to keep food on the table god will help all but not with riches may god bless and protect you all
it's not just the pay-per- hour workers being laid off..... my dad was a captain [pilot] for DHL for 10 years. he just lost his job on jan. 13th and hasn't been able to find work as a pilot. he went from making nearly $120,000 a year to $0. in a matter of months. Wilmington is a sad place... trust me! we're all trying as hard as we can to get through it.
he wasn't a DHL pilot because they have none. He wasn't Astar because they have not had a layoff. He was ABX. He should have been saving his money!!!!
I have many issues with what you just said. First of all... excuse me for not knowing exactly who my father worked for... and you got the point-- everyone at that company was laid off. Secondly, don't insult my father's intelligence by saying he should have been saving his money. My father is very educated- he has a masters from American University in Political Science and he's been a pilot for nearly 28 years. People can ALWAYS save more- even the wealthiest people- so your argument is void.
Conglomo, its easy to sit back and be a armchair quarterback on this crisis. These people represent the American working class. As much as I admire your sense of rugged individualism, I believe you are way off your mark on your stance with this issue,
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what i saw was alot of fat overweight people, now they will lose weight with less food. THAT'S A GOOD THING. and that one lady with her daughter and son-in-law and baby living with them, STOP MAKING BABIES!!!
If I knew who you were I would come and kick your spoiled ass. I grew up with people who are losing everything because this country has allowed free enterprise to be exploited by greedy bankers. What the story doesn't tell is that Airborne Express was the third largest air freight company in the world and was quickly approaching FEDEX and UPS. UPS bankrolled DHL's takeover because they knew DHL could not sustain an airpark such as that under their own supervision.
ok the guy who lost his son pure and simply was betrayed and manipulated. the MIC is nothing more than a shill for bankers and corporations with gazillions at their disposale and also do nothing or care nothing for the common man. GREED GREED and POWER that is the war is about. nothing more nothing less. the soldiers are duped into believeing they are fighting for something worthy they are not. end of discussion.
I'm not a politician so i do not have to be nice or sugar coat things for you. Its not ok to be run of the mill, just slaving away is not job security and no one owes you anything because of that.
Being poor and dependent, being run of the mill is like gambling, one day you are going to lose, but the stakes here are life.
Sometimes you have to cut loses, suffer, pick yourself up and start over. But feel free to talk about how "evil" it is, how "harsh" see if you can take that to the bank,
The weakness of mind, body and spirit here is sad. Look this is the real world, the only security you have is being smarter, faster, stronger and hitting harder than the people around you, hoping that the better person does not come into view and knock you off.
I bet every promising kid in that community figured that out and got out of dodge the SECOND they got an acceptance letter to a good school.
I'm done with you, just like DHL is done with this area's losses. Cut your losses and move.
I respect the decisions of the young people who chose college over living with Wilmington's limited opportunities. But sadly these young people are going to be in the same boat as their parents and have no jobs to look forward to, not even Walmart or McDonalds. And how do you get out of dodge when the economic downturn is hitting everywhere? Watch out for that smarter, faster, stronger, and harder hitting person. He/she may take you down before you know it.
If things keep going the way they have been, about the only "jobs" that'll be available to US born citizens who aren't well connected, other than the military, will be as drug trafficers, car thieves, identity thieves, armed robbers, muggers, burglars, and prostitutes.
This is why people need to save and stay out of debt when times are good and always have backup plans. Yet, with all the bad times, taxpayers are willing to allow the mortgaging of their futures to bailout Wall Street bankers so they can buy new jets and remodel their offices.
new jets built in plants that employ workers, furniture sold by companies that employ workers to be put in mansions built by us based contractors with cars built by companies with plants in the US or in other countries that Import goods and are a part of a global economy.
TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS. You are right about the first part. That is why we live at and below our means, save during feast so we can survive famine.
I am getting off this page though, the mind sets here make me sad.
DHL disaster spreads nationwide. I feel for these people in Ohio. My husband works for DHL for over 18 yrs in NY. They downsized his location & he was lucky to keep his job but he has to commute almost 5 hrs/day to NYC. He does it with hopes that in 2.5 yrs he can retire with full union benefits. That was the reason for sticking with this company all these yrs. In our hearts we know it won't happen. There will be more layoffs & he'll loose everything. At 59 where do you go?
DHL has a moral and social responsibility to help out this town. Having toured the HUB in Ohio several times (I am a past DHL employee), I can testify that the ONLY significant employer is DHL. The next closest city is 1 1/2 hours away. The competition is hundreds of miles away (in Memphis and Louisville) so it's not an option to go work there. These people have lost all equity in their homes and will have a REAL tough time finding employment. DHL destoyed this small town. Shame on you DHL!
Its not an option to go work there because there was a law passed to stop you and armed military are standing at the city lines preventing you from it? What a ridiculous "i'm owed" mentality.
My father commuted an hour and 15 min both ways each day for over 12 years now from his home in the burbs to the city, thats an excuse.
But no amount of logic will make sense to people who think that its ok to have lived paycheck to paycheck, above their means, had no life savings, no plans for the future.
Greg Spotts warned us with a DVD called "American Jobs." Morgan Spurlock warned us with an episode of "30 Days" - it was based on the minimum wage. Ross Perot tried to speak out about NAFTA in a 1993 debate on Larry King. Lou Dobbs tried to warn us about all of the outsourcing. ALL OF THESE PEOPLE tried to warn us. Unfortunately, just like with Ron Paul & Peter Schiff - WE DIDN'T LISTEN!!!
conglomorateman, I have bettered myself, gotten an education, and left poverty behind- I worked at Airborn while I was going to college. Not all of the people who worked there were entry level. There were high dollar employees there too. DHL came in making promises. Clinton County made decisions based on their word. When they pulled out they offered very little communication or assistance to the local government there even though they KNEW that thy we're going to destroy this community.
Yeah...remember that statement..."left poverty behind" you are dependant on the system..trust me....unless you own a farm (own it) own the equipment, have all the capitol you need (machinery/water/fuel/ manpower......you are part of the system don't fool yourself..I have a great military retirement, money in the bank, a collage degree, and no debt..if this whole thing collapses...you will know poverty..the dollar will collapse, you will need to barter...extreme violence..it may come...
of course a catastrophy cold catapult any of us back into poverty. Your line of thinking is making our economy worse. We need to look at the silver lining and work to make things better. The last thing we need to do is go hide out in a Y2K shelter somewhere shaking in fear.
Well unless those high dollar workers were the cause of DHL America failing where as DHL Europe did not (hint hint) they should be able to get on with a competitor. If they lived BELOW their means this should be nothing more than an inconvenience.
If their local gov (which is a business) did not have the sense a child entrepreneur has not to put all eggs in one basket, make informed decisions void of speculation, get everything in writing....well then... their fault, I can not blame DHL.
Um...hello? There was no other basket. This place is out in the middle of farm country. What other competitors are these people going to work for? They will have to leave Wilmington to find work, which will leave lots of empty homes and a decimated real estate market. The economy grew around this industry because it was the only one available. Now, if only the do-good Christians would allow the casino to open...Maybe the local economy could recover. But that is a new topic. Do you work for DHL?
the same thing has happened in the rural south....we lost all our textile industry...and there are no jobs here at all...same thing with the churches..so called churches..rather see its people starve, drive 125 miles a day for minimum wage rather than have jobs here..
DHL's responsibility is to make a profit. It is not their responsibility to create or maintain jobs. If management was unable to find a way to make a profit, DHL is doing the right thing by shutting down all US operations. IF there is sufficient need for a new competitor is this marketplace, a new company can pick up the pieces. Buck up, folks. Self reliance has been and always will be the road to happiness.
100% correct. DHL's downsize and death in the US market means that their customers will now turn to UPS/FedEx and other lesser known companies. Any good DHL worker should be able to get on with them as their work load increases from DHL's death. This is the free market/trickle down economics at its finest.
You have to do what you have to do, nothing in life is promised but death. Roll with the punches, evolve or become extinct.
Like many small towns, there is a large company that employs a large majority of the people living in the town. When that company fails, the town suffers. But it's not just Wilmington; DHL people all over the country suffer, as well. I know, I am one of those. The main problem with this story, is that it implies that the economy caused the company to fail, it does not address the real reason, which is shitty management, from the top down. Ask any DHL worker, and you'll hear the truth.
Yep...shitty management...just like the American economy...the economy itself has not failed...it's the friggen financial criminals and incompetant government...they have destroyed us...What Willmington is experiencing now..most of America will experience in the next few years..get ready
Financial criminals? The government from the Community Reinvestment Act under Carter through Barney Frank created the financial criminals by forcing banks to make loans to people not credit-worthy first with a legislative incentive and then giving them a financial incentive by having Fannie and Freddie buy whatever bad loans they made.
thats not an absolute truth, the sub-prime meltdown was due to banks failing to follow guidelines, from false appraisals to accepting "statement of incomes" banks were not forced to accept these types of loans and consumers borrowed more than they could afford..however..that's really is not the whole problem....the massive amount of debt incurred during the Bush adminstration (doubled the national debt) along with wall street corruption and the wrapping of home loans with auto/credit (continued)
into derivative investments severly compounded the problem. Another major problem is the amount of state government debt.....43 states now are in debt..some have masive debt and are bankrupt. Californinia and Ohio are examples of local govenments failing to be competant (california is 42 billion in the hole) ..so your statement may contain some truth..but is only part of the total problem...
This is BS. Banks, brokers, and loan originators are bound to follow the guidelines. If the guidelines allow people to make bad financial decisions, the LO's aren't allowed to stop them. I can't tell you how many times I've encouraged buyers not to overspend, but they rarely listen! If only someone could follow us all around and stop us from spending too much...
Haha..yeah...so the bankers are saints following the guidelines.?.okay, I seriously doubt it.......what about the massive debt we have as a nation?, what about state debt, unfunded entitlements.......so wall street is honest?...what about Madoff.......look at the whole picture...you don't think our government is responsible for over spending? If we had a balanced budget right now..how bad do you think this crisis would be...????
So the problems caused by the massive debt of the Bush Administration won't be ameliorated by the debt heaped upon us by the Obama Administration. If that your point, I can agree with that without reservation. But the tightening of the credit markets has to be eased. The whole house of cards is built upon trust that each of us will meet our obligations. Until that confidence returns, the recession will continue.
It is my personal opinion that the credit markets could open freely...and the problems will still get worse...there is a large shift underway from consumerism...my opinion...
Shift away from consumerism? Really? Maybe in the short term I can agree with you. People want to lower their debt. But advertising is still as viable an industry as ever. Despite currently popular shows preaching debt elimination, it is more efficient to manage debt than to avoid it completely. A mortgage, for instance, or two, is the only tax deductible expenditure left. It does not make sense not to have a mortgage, if you are a tax bracket in a higher bracket.
NOOOOO..the cost of interest on a mortgage never equals the savings in tax deductions.....ever..mmmmm, so you think if you pay $20,000 in interest mortgage..you will get an additional $20,000 back in taxes...most people I know have figured that out...it rarely provides a beneifit of 30% gain against your claim..leaving you about $12,500 in the hole...you should know better..do the math......(and the more you make..the less you get in return)
Haha! Think bigger! It is not just the tax savings. It is the opportunity cost of the money itself. Look, if I have a $100,000 mortgage and pay an effective rate of 4% on the money, all I need to do is beat 4% in another investment vehicle to be better off. Doing that is simple...even these days. This, of course, assumes one has enough income to itemize deductions.
No the bankers aren't saints. I was referring to mortgage bankers and loan originators. I have personally witnessed loan originators telling people that they are qualified for much more than they should actually spend. Alot of times, people spend it anyway. We are ALL in debt, as a nation, and as individuals and no one held a gun to our heads to make us get there.
Unfortunantly..it's not going to..think about it...Not only is the US governement suffering from massive debt...they are printing money to bail out states that are broke...America is extremly broke...and has masive debt...the continued massive layoffs and higher unemployment will compound the problem...there will be no recovery...we are going into a massive depression that will change everything about this country...don't listen to the government..they are trying to prevent mass panic
What they did to the community? First off DHL inherited the area from Airborne Express. Even if they had not, the community was full of people who were dependent on a company and had very little usefulness anywhere else apparently. DHL's losses are more than the combined yearly income of that community times some exponent I am sure. Its not ok to be coast in life, not ok to be poor, you will suffer and die unless you aggressively try to better yourself. Take notes kids, push hard or suffer.
Inherited?? NO, they BOUGHT it. They chose it! DHL/Airborne are not the only companies in that airpark. There are some smaller companies that are directly affected by this. ACS (also known as Trippak or TMI) moved to Kentucky because all of their work came from DHL. Dealer Track is packing up and moving to Memphis--closer to FedEx's main hub. So, there's more of a ripple effect going on than you realize. Unless you live in this area; you will not know how badly this is affecting us.
DHL should be held responsible for what they did to this community. I hope that there will be money available to educate the people who have lost their jobs so that will be able to get jobs that paid at least as much as they were making before. Also, no one has mentioned the bypass that was just built on the premise that DHL would be remaining in the community for a certain period of time. DHL did not keep their end of the deal and DHL showed a reckless disregard for the people they employed.

The argument may be made that if they were struggling before, they should have moved onto better jobs. To that I say that: many of these people have been with the company for more than a decade... they were living comfortably (maybe not wealthy) before the crisis. To argue that they should have been looking for jobs when they found out can be diminished if you understand that very few companies are hiring; they can't afford to pay their employees either!
indycolts1786 2 years ago 3
The News media is supposed to tell us what is going on. This video is a good look at what is happening, but I ask what about telling teas people Why this is happening. All this is part of a big plan and People should be told. Tell people about the Fatima message. It is not a secret anymore.
StigmataBOB1 2 years ago
Heres the point. All you knew back in May this was going to happen. You should have been looking for a job then. But hey, Obama will help you. an if your son dropped out of college, thats his fault. There a plenty of help out there for college students. DHL will go back to CVG and wish they had never left!!!!!!!!
catfanuc 3 years ago

Take care and keep your heads up.

it's not just the pay-per- hour workers being laid off..... my dad was a captain [pilot] for DHL for 10 years. he just lost his job on jan.

When they pulled out they offered very little communication or assistance to the local government there even though they KNEW that thy we're going to destroy this community.
luciao1 3 years ago 3
Yeah...remember that statement..."left poverty behind" you are dependant on the system..trust me....unless you own a farm (own it) own the equipment, have all the capitol you need (machinery/water/fuel/ manpower......you are part of the system don't fool yourself..I have a great military retirement, money in the bank, a collage degree, and no debt..if this whole thing collapses...you will know poverty..the dollar will collapse, you will need to barter...extreme violence..it may come...
wrinkles1931 3 years ago
of course a catastrophy cold catapult any of us back into poverty. Your line of thinking is making our economy worse. We need to look at the silver lining and work to make things better. The last thing we need to do is go hide out in a Y2K shelter somewhere shaking in fear.
luciao1 3 years ago
Well unless those high dollar workers were the cause of DHL America failing where as DHL Europe did not (hint hint) they should be able to get on with a competitor. If they lived BELOW their means this should be nothing more than an inconvenience.
If their local gov (which is a business) did not have the sense a child entrepreneur has not to put all eggs in one basket, make informed decisions void of speculation, get everything in writing....well then... their fault, I can not blame DHL.
conglomorateman 3 years ago
Do you work for DHL?
luciao1 3 years ago
the same thing has happened in the rural south....we lost all our textile industry...and there are no jobs here at all...same thing with the churches..so called churches..rather see its people starve, drive 125 miles a day for minimum wage rather than have jobs here..
centervilletn 3 years ago
DHL's responsibility is to make a profit. It is not their responsibility to create or maintain jobs. If management was unable to find a way to make a profit, DHL is doing the right thing by shutting down all US operations. IF there is sufficient need for a new competitor is this marketplace, a new company can pick up the pieces. Buck up, folks. Self reliance has been and always will be the road to happiness.
LoboalaPuerta 3 years ago

Ask any DHL worker, and you'll hear the truth.
trazap08 3 years ago
Yep...shitty management...just like the American economy...the economy itself has not failed...it's the friggen financial criminals and incompetant government...they have destroyed us...What Willmington is experiencing now..most of America will experience in the next few years..get ready
wrinkles1931 3 years ago 3
Financial criminals? The government from the Community Reinvestment Act under Carter through Barney Frank created the financial criminals by forcing banks to make loans to people not credit-worthy first with a legislative incentive and then giving them a financial incentive by having Fannie and Freddie buy whatever bad loans they made.
LoboalaPuerta 3 years ago
thats not an absolute truth, the sub-prime meltdown was due to banks failing to follow guidelines, from false appraisals to accepting "statement of incomes" banks were not forced to accept these types of loans and consumers borrowed more than they could afford..however..that's really is not the whole problem....the massive amount of debt incurred during the Bush adminstration (doubled the national debt) along with wall street corruption and the wrapping of home loans with auto/credit (continued)
wrinkles1931 3 years ago
into derivative investments severly compounded the problem. Another major problem is the amount of state government debt.....43 states now are in debt..some have masive debt and are bankrupt. Californinia and Ohio are examples of local govenments failing to be competant (california is 42 billion in the hole) ..so your statement may contain some truth..but is only part of the total problem...
wrinkles1931 3 years ago
This is BS. Banks, brokers, and loan originators are bound to follow the guidelines. If the guidelines allow people to make bad financial decisions, the LO's aren't allowed to stop them. I can't tell you how many times I've encouraged buyers not to overspend, but they rarely listen! If only someone could follow us all around and stop us from spending too much...
luciao1 3 years ago
Haha..yeah...so the bankers are saints following the guidelines.?.okay, I seriously doubt it.......what about the massive debt we have as a nation?, what about state debt, unfunded entitlements.......so wall street is honest?...what about Madoff.......look at the whole picture...you don't think our government is responsible for over spending? If we had a balanced budget right now..how bad do you think this crisis would be...????
wrinkles1931 3 years ago
So the problems caused by the massive debt of the Bush Administration won't be ameliorated by the debt heaped upon us by the Obama Administration. If that your point, I can agree with that without reservation. But the tightening of the credit markets has to be eased. The whole house of cards is built upon trust that each of us will meet our obligations. Until that confidence returns, the recession will continue.
LoboalaPuerta 3 years ago
It is my personal opinion that the credit markets could open freely...and the problems will still get worse...there is a large shift underway from consumerism...my opinion...
wrinkles1931 3 years ago
Shift away from consumerism? Really? Maybe in the short term I can agree with you. People want to lower their debt. But advertising is still as viable an industry as ever. Despite currently popular shows preaching debt elimination, it is more efficient to manage debt than to avoid it completely. A mortgage, for instance, or two, is the only tax deductible expenditure left. It does not make sense not to have a mortgage, if you are a tax bracket in a higher bracket.
LoboalaPuerta 3 years ago
NOOOOO..the cost of interest on a mortgage never equals the savings in tax deductions.....ever..mmmmm, so you think if you pay $20,000 in interest mortgage..you will get an additional $20,000 back in taxes...most people I know have figured that out...it rarely provides a beneifit of 30% gain against your claim..leaving you about $12,500 in the hole...you should know better..do the math......(and the more you make..the less you get in return)
wrinkles1931 3 years ago
LoboalaPuerta 3 years ago
No the bankers aren't saints. I was referring to mortgage bankers and loan originators. I have personally witnessed loan originators telling people that they are qualified for much more than they should actually spend. Alot of times, people spend it anyway. We are ALL in debt, as a nation, and as individuals and no one held a gun to our heads to make us get there.
luciao1 3 years ago
Fannie and Freddie only accounted for about 15% of the bad loans. The rest were from private banks who simply repackaged and sold the loans.

wrinkles1931 3 years ago
What they did to the community? First off DHL inherited the area from Airborne Express. Even if they had not, the community was full of people who were dependent on a company and had very little usefulness anywhere else apparently. DHL's losses are more than the combined yearly income of that community times some exponent I am sure. Its not ok to be coast in life, not ok to be poor, you will suffer and die unless you aggressively try to better yourself. Take notes kids, push hard or suffer.
conglomorateman 3 years ago
