  • most stupid and maked by totally brainless idiots... we have 16:9 tv's and thats ok (present times standard) but some morons makin and selling BD's in cinema aspect ratio 2.39:1 and that is shit. Why not normal 1.78:1 (16:9)? why we need to watch 2 black belts? almost 45% of the screen is useless, 21 century are times with most stupid people, full of idiots and imbecils, im never buying movies with other aspects than 1.78:1... where the fucking problem is to make full frame 16:9 format BD?

  • @B0l06 Id have to say that 85% of all movies are shot in this format and not 16:9

  • i love the end

  • CinemAAAA

  • Frigid was the wrong word...in fact...a weird word.

  • Any why after all the years of TVs and cameras they have not figured out how to STANDARDIZE THE F-ING ASPECT RATIO is beyond me...

  • @TechnologyGod Why would they want to force a standardization of it? That would take away the director's free will to shoot in whatever aspect ratio they want. Some things look better in 16:9, some look better in 21:9. If you don't like 21:9, just don't buy it. It's that simple.

  • When can we buy it in stores? : P

  • yes well its called a PC whit 1080p zoom in a little and done no more truble altho i do like the Super Widescreen that pans around the player

  • this is getting ridicules....how much do we need to look to the sides? how about looking to the sky? no1 cares about looking up anymore? I dont know about you guys but sometimes I feel like when Im playing BF2 I wish I was able to see the planes better....before I get bombed

  • In the near future, tvs will be as wide as your whole living room. Screw this, 16/9 is enough wide for me.

  • i still a black bar, but thinner

  • Sure, having a 21:9 aspect ratio TV would eliminate the black bars on the top and bottom if watching on a 16:9 aspect ratio TV... But what about watching TV shows, there will be black bars on the left and right, my god it'll be like watching 4:3 on a 16:9 again!

  • @JackethRawreth Yes exactly. One thing to remember is the reason why companies gave us 16:9 in the first place: We had 4:3 and cinema was 21:9 and the PTB thought that size screen was too-big for our homes so they made an in-between size that was wider than 4:3 but smaller than cinema 21:9 - enter the 16:9 screen! So yes, because of that blunder we probably will have to relive the ratio-wars all over again. :) Have fun.

  • @cwilbr

lol so basically theirs no need to buy a current hd 16 9 screen right? since they have so many defects. most cant even play SD without looking horrible. i bet that in 10 years lcd and plasma 16 9 screens will perish. with sed and laser tvs on the way and oled and 3d already here 21:9 will be the new standard. i guess i will stick with my current hd 16 9 crt tv which blows away most screens.

  • It's kinda stupid, maybe in the future it could be used, but right now most movies are filmed in 16:9 so that format isn't really used, yet. But still, it is better than 4:3 xD

  • would playing a game like Modern Warfare 2 just stretch the game? or woukd it just cut of the top and bottom

  • just buy a screen with the same width but 16:9 ratio if you want to spend 3 grand...

  • TVs will keep getting wider and wider...... Pretty soon a taller screen will be a selling point. lol

  • так он стоит больше 4000$

  • And TV program and movie in 16:9 like Hellboy or Sherlock Holmes? 21:9 is shit, another commercial fraud especially for those who have just bought it because now released the 21:9 3D, great deal genius XD ahahah.

  • not every director wants a widescreen shot you know. how can they settle in one aspect ratio if for example someone wants to shoot old style. the black bars will still be there. they should make an old style movie with full widescreen shots though hahaha

  • this is stupid, if movies were made in 21:9 ratio, then why do TV companies make 16:9 TV's why not just make 21:9 in the first place?!

  • Yeah, or why not the movie producers use 16:9, every movie varys from 2.4:1, some are 2.35:1, so even this TV would not be exactly right for every movie, if only the movie industry could settle on one aspect ratio

  • That's not the point...The director choses the aspect ratio depending on a variety reasons... sometimes they want it to be more up close and personal (16:9) sometimes they want a wider image, getting more shot in the frame (21:9). If you make them pick one standardized aspect ratio, you take all the creativity and art out of filmmaking.

  • that's an opinion, not all directors feel that standardized ratio takes out the art of filming, cos the art of filming is mostly in the way you approach a scene. in my opinion though, they are just making TV's height smaller and more wider, which actually limits you view of the screen, like looking at a letter box, unless you get a extra huge TV. 16:9 is wide enough,

  • because most TV is shot in 16:9 and some still in 4:3... Also a good amount of movies continue to be shot in 16:9. There really has been no need for a 21:9 TV until the digital age. It will take awhile to catch on

  • because not evryone has a 21:9 ratio tv and ur wrong anyway. movies ar made at cinema ratio wich is 21:9 Dvd's ar just downscaled to 16:9

  • because tv shows, sports, news is filmed in 16:9 you fucking retard

  • whoa calm down, I'm just questioning the high variety of aspect ratios there right now, and there isn't 1 TV that will suit them all......

  • So that they can sell us new TVs? I dunno.

  • I saw this today in a store. It did look awesome! What happens when a film has subtitles? Does it crop the film? Could you imagine if original material was filmed in this format i.e. sporting events? Uk football fans will be shouting: "Oi"? "Ref"? "Off side"?

  • I'ld love to watch hd movies with 7.1 sound on that one, must be awesome. How much is it? And does it support frame doubling, so making 48 hz out of 24?

  • I prefer watching the two black bars

  • awesome for films.

    but for films only.

because if you watch a normal tv-show, you'll have vertical black bars. they should make a fold-out tv, that can adjust itself on the stuff that's displayed on the tv :D!

  • or a sliding TV, which slides outwards.... now that would be cool, even have the ability to go to 4:3 ratio....

  • Comment removed

  • You should only get this if you are a hardcore film buff! For videogames and regular tv and sports 16 :9 is fine. The world cup for example will be broadcast in the 16:9 format!

  • OK and here a stupid question guys.... I got a SONY 50inches LCD Projection TV... Its very nice but not FULL HD and the picture is like a CRT TV... Maybe a bit better. The thing is.. i want to be this PHILIPS Cinema TV BUT!! According to its HEIGHT... it is 6-7cm shorter than my SONY... I need the HEIGHT for videogames... will it show BADLY if i play videogames? coz its LESS height 7cm less.. STUPID QUESTION I know... but plz help haha :p thx

  • yes!

  • for video games, I would say you should buy a 16:9 TV at full HD, its perfect for almost everything which is broadcast, and video games, except for a growing number of movies.

  • I would gladly sell my current tv and buy this

  • ya, but don't even think about the other 95% of tv that uses 4:3 and 16:9 format. this is pretty dumb..

  • It looks very nice... but Ive got a question...

I like to watch movies, but I also watch normal tv channels.... would that 21:9 size somehow affect it? or it would be normal like on 16:9?

  • Not at all. When you watch TV (4:3 or 16:9) you will see vertical black bars. That's all.

  • So I wont see them... but will be the picture normal, or extra wide?

  • It depends. Most TVs have zoom capabilities. You can watch 4:3 or 16:9 with vertical black bars OR full size with stretched images.

  • I got this Television and you got Zoom capabilities wich is perfect when I'm playing games and watching Tv shows.

For sure later in the future they will create games and tv shows that also includes 21:9 :)

  • it would be window boxed with a zoom for pillar box! This is the perfect ratio for movies ONLY!

  • Well IMO I feel this is great for technology and the back bars don't bug me though I like cinemascope on 4:3 tvs more than on 16:9 because I think it looks artistic. Here's the big problem, yes they can fill the screen if formatted right but the tv needs a stretch feature to do it projecting 16:9. and people are still adjusting to high definition and its ratio chance so to be quite honest, it needs more time wait before hitting the markets because it's to early imo.

  • u forgot to say it support 2560 x 1080 as well

  • i like it.

  • Damn, it looks terrific.

  • Will never ever catch on, 16x9 is a perfect inbetween, if you watch a 16x9 movie on that you will have black bars at the sides.

  • this tv isnt for people who watch 16:9 movies. :P

  • the point is that most movies are filmed in a much wider aspect ratio... so this is designed specifically to work to "cinemascope" width-to-height ratios

  • i saw this in John Lewis and it was for £4499 :S

  • yay my dad is getting one!

  • this is a load of bollocks and nothing but milkage!!!

  • KLINGON!!!

  • awesome but to much expensive 4000 euro!!!

  • 1. kostet er 3600€

    2. es muss heissen "too expensive" und nicht " to much expensive"

  • Many shows (repeats and some special channels) are still in standard 4:3 def..How big will the black bars on the side be fore that? Not to mention even 16:9 High-def.

It solves a problem but creates a new one.

I dont see this catching on--except in limited circumstances--solely a basement viewing room and not as a main tv in a house.

    Thoughts?

  • Look at Philips homepage, they have the answer last i checked;)

  • Until movies start coming formatted for the 21:9 aspect ratio, this really serves no purpose. Quality will be lost, video games do not support this type of widescreen (so they will just be stretched or have black bars on the sides), and the wider the tv gets, the smaller the diagonal measurements impress... This TV is 56", and I honestly feel like I would need an 80 or 90" version of it in order to watch movies with the family comfortably... We'll see what happens in a few years.

  • Movies already are made in 21:9 format, thats why they made this tv, beacase with 16:9 you still get black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. However, you are right about video games, this tv would cause problems...also watching tv shows it would cause problems too, because those ARE made in 16:9

  • Movies are made in 21:9 format, yes, but the DVD and Blu-ray movies are not formatted for this type of TV. Movies are encoded at a 16:9 form, so those "black bars" are part of the picture. This TV will stretch out the movie as it should, but resolution will be lost until movies are encoded to the 21:9 form properly. A 16:9 TV is truly the best of both worlds right now between 4:3 TV broadcasting and these 16:9 and 21:9 movies.

  • thats one telly that costs a friggin lot

  • sorry... this guy is a professional presenter? and he just said "Protential".... jesus.

  • its called an accent.....jesus

  • When i get my home theatre sorted out, i'll customize the screen, so i can put some light-absorbing material in front of the the picture to remove the black bars from the top and bottom. That's probably the cheapest way to getting the 21:9 AR if you ask me, but it requires some DIY. If you want to block out the black bars from the side which appears during pillarboxed sources then it's best to find some curtains that'll absord the light.

  • if the movies are fullscreen on the cinema tv, than with the regular tv programms there are black borders again. So it's not solving a problem.

With zooming in into the picture you will lose quality.

I think people sould wait a couple of years to buy this new tv.

There are still tv programms broadcasting in the 4:3 ratio (then you will have a lot of black on the sides of your tv.

  • true, that's what i was getting at

  • Finally, someone does it RIGHT!

  • 'eradicate those black bars forever'... except for the other 95% of the time where you're watching 16:9 television.

  • omg gotta hook my ps3 to that thing o.O

  • @lorenzo1234567891011

hahahaha h3ll yeee!!!! imagine call of duty on tht b1tch!!??? 0_0

  • @lorenzo1234567891011 I gotta hook up my Magnavox Odyssey to that thing.

  • @lorenzo1234567891011

i think it is made for eyefinity not ps3

    but maybe i'm wrong

  • The black bars never really annoyed me. I just ignore them, and within a few min i forget that i'm even watching a movie that has them. Until i switch back to tv anyway.

  • The problem is if you have an old smaller tv (4:3) and the black bars take a lot of space then, so you have nearly the half screen black when you add those bars together .-/

  • OH

Those black bars are so annoying, why won't they just go away.

    the horror, the horror

  • jajajajaja

  • Yes, I still believe, there is the rest of the movie behind them :)

  • Sometimes there is part of the picture behind the black bars (reffered to as a 'matted' image'), but it's rare. In most cases, the black bars aren't covering anything, just filling in empty space.

  • So if you have a movie that is 16:9 yo still get black bars. Just somewhere else.

  • All movies should be 16:9

  • Why is that?

  • Because 21:9 is like chopping the top and bottom off of a 16:9 movie. If you watch the extras on Ironman you can see that it was shot in 16:9 and the top and bottom were cropped.

  • I don't know about Ironman, but the vast majority of 2.35:1 films were originally shot in 2.35:1.

  • Despite all the negative comments. They are kind of right.

Pretty much ALL movies are now 21:9 not 16:9.

Its main purpose I'm assuming is so that Philips Ambilight will finally have colour on the top and bottom of the screen instead of it always being black...

  • I like philips but this is only a commercial gimmicks for the fools.

  • Just do the maths - buy a 65" plasma and get best with all aspects ratios

  • its gonna cost about 4000 euro

  • Looks nice but i don't need that.

  • you're gonna want that within 5 years

  • A 4:3 displayed on that stretched would look horrendous

  • Cinematic experience. Is any movie filmed in 4:3????????

  • Someone in 4:3,many in 16:9 (Imax is in only 16:9),a many other in 21:9, but you preferere the black band or a stretched image? absolutely black band for me more cinematic.

  • Old ones have a 4:3 ratio.

  • I saw a guy from philips talking about this on TV and he was asked if it was a problem that most broadcast is in 16:9. He said that the TV would just stretch the picture so it filled the screen, and that it didn't matter if everything looked wider, because bigger = better!

What a fuckin idiot. What self-respecting film/TV/sports fan is gonna watch a stretched image??

The correct aspect ratio should always be preserved. The guy had no clue.

  • I agree, I hate when people think a stretched picture is good. I like that they've made a TV that allows wider films to be viewed in full frame, though.

  • Most hollywood movies nowadays are made in 1:2.35 ratio, which is great. But 16:9 is fine for TV shows and sport etc.

This TV is great for movies but you should be able to watch everything else in its correct aspect ratio, not stretched.

  • I agree.

  • I just have fucking old 4:3 flat televisions, and 21:9 is fucking appearing.

  • its called post box and yes its pissing annoying. fuk tard tele companys.

  • this is great, except for that whole thing when you're watching 16:9 video and you get black bars on the left and right...

  • Yeah, filmmakers have the freedom to display their works of art however they want. There will always be black bars.

  • Why can't it be both?

  • wa.... i want that!

  • wow

  • cool...

  • that is sick man. i want one. give me a 72 inch :)

  • Why on earth is this only arriving now!!!!

  • Companies do this all the time:

Do we know what people want? Yes.

Do we have the technology? Yes.

    Do we sell it? No.

Why? The market for lesser products is not depleted yet - we will sell our old crap for a few more years, start putting a few items out at a really high price and then drop the prices down to a normal level within ten years - all the time blaming the high prices on the low sales, of course, and not the other way around.

  • siiiiiiik

  • wow that is sick!
