I think that most belly dancers who have been trained with history and culture will understand you wouldn't dance to a beledi with a cane, you would use cane music, which is a Saidi, but one golden rule of thumb when performing: When you create your own choreography, you get to do what you want to do and that makes it okay." just don't be so surprised when people are surprised. Go Get em girl!
@PCCBellydance see the movie, gahem imraa (a womans hell. she does a number in there like this. it was on youtube but the owner made it private.
anyway i lived in egypt for 8 years and this music is typical for cane dancing...REAL dancing, not the shit these western dancers who takes 2 classes and think they are professionals put out there.
I liked it too. I think that the important thing is, besides the skill and clothing, the music with ''egyptian-alike'' flavor, and she did. so i see nothing wrong
I personally would never even think of doing cane/assaya to a beledi taqsim progression. Typically the cane is done to Egyptian Saidi music or Lebanese Debke music. But that being said, I thought she did a nice job with what she did. She didn't ignore the music or the dancing to play with the cane. However I'd rather see her dance to this type of music without the cane, and to see her cane work to more appropriate music.
@NormaDancer2 i think it can be done if performing the tet beledi...the men's style..but she's not..and it's not the right music for that even. but i agree with you entirely!
Hi, i don't understand the title, why do you write "wrong music"? Because of the music style? Isn't it saidi? not very important but i'd like to know ^^
She is very good, I liked it! Music is a bit hard to dance and risky for assaya. She is having difficulties while turning the stick (3:15)becouse of the rthym, than she is ending up holding it most of the time. But these little details dont make her performance bad.She is still very good and courageous to try something different.
While I think it is very important to maintain traditions as accurately as possible, I don't think it is necessary for every dance to be authentic. She dances beautifully, as she sees fit. I think it's good for performers who use very culture-specific props/costumes/moves to explain to their audience when they are doing something culturally authentic and when they are innovating.
I'll say this, as an Egyptian, she did a good job. And the music is fine with the cane. But I do suggest that she do more with the cane. She mostly held it up in the air above her and just danced, or shook her hips, but she didn't USE the cane to her advantage. I definitely see that she enjoys bellydancing and has the right attitude for it. All she needs to do is use the cane more, watch traditional egyptian bellydancers (like nagwa fouad) using the cane, and use more variety in her moves.
I´m from Europe, and i´m studyng arab dance, is´t quite hard to memorize all the rithms, but if u study is easy, that´s why i am carefully! she is perfoming a baladi! with a cane, and she is not wearing the correct costume!! oh god!! even she is not a bad dancer :)
There is sooooo much more to Egyptian dance than just Saidi or Beledi. Its nice that American dancers know this small part, but I think it is wise to realize the scope of Egyptian dance knowledge in the US is small, to say the least. Dancer "experts" are too quick to judge in order to prove their limited awareness of Egyptian dance. It doesnt look good for professionals to talk arrogant like this - really...... intelligent people will begin to question your credentials.
she can dance with the cane for a tupac song, she can do what she likes, belly dance has been so mutilated, it is not what it traditionally is anymore, what do u care anyways?
To an expert who tends to be too picky, it's probably all wrong. But it doesn't matter to the rest of us (the average person) -- we wouldn't know saidi from beledi or salami or belini. She used the cane well and danced just fine. A BIG HAND FOR THE LITTLE LADY!
