  • GO ON THE FUCKING IRISH!!!!!!!

  • This youtube is not very reliable when you try to post something.Went to try and see the brave mans grave the other day in Downpatrick. It was in the cemetry down the street from the jail. But i could not find it.Down district council or NI tourist board take note and please do it up with permission from the Parish Church.

  • Went to see his grave in Downpatrick. In the Church of Ireland graveyard down the street from the jail.Could not find it.Should be more looked after by the tourist board or Down district council.

  • First heard this from wee Freddy Anderson the Glasgow poet...born in Co Monaghan.....I'll never forget it!

  • I LOVE IRELAND..

  • coulter does a good job on it, some different lines in it compared to tommy makems version

  • This is a mighty recitation of Wilson's poem. It makes me wish I were Irish. That's a major compliment. I love it. I truly love it.

"I knew the set and I knew the walk." Goosebumps all the way.

    Best,

    Mike

  • You're right, Mike - mighty is the only word.

Have you heard Sam Bracken's version with Five Hand Reel?

  • It is a long time since I heard that poem. It brings back memories. I forget if I learned it in school or if my dad taught it to me. Phil does a great job of it.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • anyone know where I can get the lyrics for this?

  • I could have swore I posted the link to this... search google for "lyrics: man from god knows where" and choose the first result from celtic-lyrics.

  • I can confirm his poem was written by Florence Mary Wilson who lived on the Groomsport Road in Bangor. Local residents are fighting a decision by the planners in Downpatrick to demolish this fine Edwardian villa and make way for shops and flats.

  • When I heard Tommy Makem recite this poem, the hair would stand up on the back of my neck!

    God Bless you Tommy, R.I.P.

  • Have you got Tommy Makem reciting it? Is it on YouTube?

  • Not that I know of. I've searched but to no avail. Just have to rely on the memories.

  • Damn. Ah well, I can only imagine how he would recite it. Thanks.

  • @lreland1 Don't know if you ever found it but Tommy Makem's rendition of The Man From God Knows Where is on a double CD set that came out recently called The Legendary Tommy Makem. It's also on a CD of poems he recorded called Ancient Pulsing. I recommend everyone hear this version.

  • @JoMcG312 Aye I did find that CD. It is a fantastic version too.

  • I was wrong, it wasn't Fred Heatley who wrote it. The ballad was actually written by Florence Wilson of Bangor Co. Down. The Photo that i have is of Fred looking at a sunken stone slab in Downpatrick Parish Churchyard bearing the words "The body of Russel."

  • That was great, Phil is very good at it. Written by Fred Heatly, i have a photo of Fred standing beside the Grave of Thomas Russel, Thanks for putting it on.

  • Hey, you're welcome and thanks for that info.
