basically it confused a lot of people who thought lyra had died and gone to heaven. the director said if they make subtle knife it'll be the opening to that
Hi I am a very good friend of Dakota Blue Richards you know where the plays Lyra ^ ^. It is probably not the second part, and then if not before 2012.
;~; why did they butcher the ending? OH WHY?? This looks so cool. I want to see the bit where Roger dies and Lord Asriel asks Mrs Coulter to come with him to destroy dust or whatever he says. sigh~~
They really need to get a grip. We should complain that their Churches are cluttering the country, lol. Anyway, they've written a script. And I think that the 'rights' to the movie have been passed on to a branch of Warner Bros. I'm slowly getting less confident that they will continue with the Trilogy, though it is upsetting that they will leave one of the best sagas unfinished. What with the actors growing older, it will be impossible if they leave it much longer...
Not really. They changed about everything. The master wasnt the one who poisoned Asriel, Iofer's(forgot how to spell it)name was changed to Ragnar, they switched around the Svalbard scene and the Bolvanger scene, and worst of all they cut off the ending. They did not stay good to the book, they changed EVERYTHING. I like the book the way it is. Hopefully, the rumor about The subtle knife coming out this year is true, and this time they actualy stay true to the book.
EVERYTHING is destroyed by Religion. It's sickening. I wanted to see all three films. Don't they have something better to do? There are movies about witches, vampires and dudes wishing they could get their hands on God but they ruin a franchise like Golden Compass. Like every other negative group doing evil behind a false perception of good, the Church are gangsters too. Makes me fuckin sick.
i dont believe that everything is destroyed by religion
I think it's destroyed by man.
even without religion we would still
destroy each other because all religions have the same golden rule. PRETTy much love your neighbor/ treat all living things the way you would like to be treated we are the one who need to find an escuse why we destroy one another and relihion fits
Actually I thought the message of the book and movie were more 'Pro-Religion' and assertive of God's existence.
Dust=God (Source of the Dust)
Magisterium=Atheists (denying dust)
'Little Cut'='Telling kids there's no God' (thereby cutting off 'dust' from the children)
The parallels are even more telling when we compare it to real life; "Does the Catholic Church have bases in the Antarctic? no, but there are SCIENCE facilities!"
Let's face it New Line made a complete Mess of the first book. They turned it into a feel good movie and the book is dark and sinister in many parts...especially the ending which New Line completely ignored.
When you change a book as much as they did I wonder why you ever think of making it in the first place.
And all the light weight American 'so called Christians'getting upst about the books...their faith must be pretty paper thin to let a work of fiction shake it so easily!
i prefered the books!!! the movie was alright but the books were much better!! i remember being in the cinema and thinking IS THAT IT!! they cut out and changed too much of it!
Why didn't they freaking put this in the movie?!! It's in the book and like the most important part at the end!! What the hell?! They messed up the end so much! They messed up the entire movie really compared to the book. Its another one of those movies that would be good if they weren't based on a book. Like if this was just a movie that didn't come from a book it would be an ok movie but since it is based on a book it sucks in comparison. Especially the ending. Its like the Eragon movie. Sux.
they couldn't have this ending because it would be too controversial and the movie want close to the book the not repel christian viewers, but they said that the subtle knife will be closer to the storyline.
there gonna repel a lot of people if they go closer to the storyline with the other two books if they make both of them. the books have already repelled me. i only watched the movie to see the differences. but still this ending isn't really the controversial stuff. that stuff like i said doesn't really show up until the 2nd and 3rd books.
I think they should just go super close to the book. It's a good thing to question authority, and the book and movie basically say it. If the church decides the movie needs to be cut,PISS OFF, I don't see their names in the credits!
That's right... the books are okay, and the movie would be, too- if it wasn't based on a novel :( just like the Eragon movie, I think that's really disappointing... specially because it's such a great idea behind this story, it could have been an amazing movie as well!
That's why I love The Lord Of The Rings... the books are great, and what they made of them on screen was, or is, breathtaking :)
I really thought if New Line Cinema produces, it could be as good as the story of the ring...
no no no no!! =( i hate this part!!!! did you see lord asriel's face when he saw roger? he didn't care 'bout the compass, he needed a kid like roger for a sacrfice to open the other world! he's gonna kill roger, well stelmaria is...
They are going to make the subtle knife! They'v got to! If got the dubble-disc edition and Chris says thet they are going to start with roger getting killed, before the introduce Will ^^ Sorry if got a bad keyboard, and a bad education in english Sorry ^^
to be honest with you, I am not suprised that they are using the ending of the first book for the begining of the second film. they actually did a reverse of that for the lord of the rings. the begining of the two towers was used as the ending of the first film, and the ending of the two towers book was used as the begining of the return of the king.
i wannah c the bit where asriel and mrs coulter kiss...coz there not supposed 2 b together, and shes lyk come with me lyra...come....anyway, thats from wii golden compass...i've completed it 2.
its guting they cut the true ending off from the book they were doing do well with sticking to the story line from the books too unlike with lord of the rings
By severing a Daemon from its companion, a massive amount of energy is unleashed. Lord Asriel harnessed this energy to create a bridge to the Aurora when he sacrificed Roger.
This sums up what a huge disappointment this film was if you love the book. The action is rushed, and characters and voiceovers are overused for exposition. You don't learn too much about the characters, either. They could have made the films Lord of the Rings length to allow the story more room to breathe. As for the ending, the makers of Lord of the Rings weren't bothered about the first two parts not having "proper" endings.
The first movie had the right ending. I wish the second movie had as well (the original ending is a HUGE cliffhanger) but I guess they needed time to add Frodo nearly gets eaten by nazgul again scenes.
thats the same for any movie that is made from a book. A book will ALWAYS be better because they can go into so much more depth with characters and feelings.
Except this was a particularly bad adaptation, largely because they tried making it a super kid-friendly film, when the book series is clearly not meant for little children.
Not is this case...just look at the Harry Potter films. the books are around 800pages long and they still manage to make a well explained story that contains all the important scenes AND ENDDINGS!..and the golden compass is only 300pgs!!! and they skipped characters and important scenes and added things that never happened!!
I agree mostly with your statement. Except with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I read the book first and was pretty disappointed in the movie.
In fact, they DID go into more depth with characters and feelings. At least Chris Weitz did, in his screenplay and original version for the movie. But New Line has cut off all of the character and plot development, and the sad ending.
Damn New Line. There must be a director's cut to redeem the movie.
Uh well, it's sad because Lyra thinks she's saving Roger, but she's actually taking him right to his death, after she spent the whole movie to rescue him.
The actual ending would change all the feeling of the movie and the sense of Lyra's mission. A tragic turn, instead of the theatrical version's anticlimatic ending.
And the sequence of the Aurora must be so great...
you actually they may have just fucked up the entire series. what if daniel craig doesn't want to come and do the second movie? they should have just left the ending in so that way if craig wanted to leave then it wouldn't be all annoying cos if they put the final scenes in the Subtle knife and then when they film again they will need someone else. but that is only if danny craig is an ass hole and abandons it
no well i read the book but what i wanted to say and maybe i said it wrong is that this part is not the end of the movie there are two more chapters but i haven't seen the movie yet so i'm not sure if this is the ending scene
Can someone explain to me why some people think the book is for athieists? I've read the books but I can't see why people think that and I've never heard of it since now. Plz answer :)
is for atheists cause lord asriel is going to destry God hell yea the authority yawe yehova the sema you pray al nigths hahahhahha lord Asriel ROCK AND ROCK SO HARD HELL YEAH
From what i understand, they didnt want to leave you hanging, in case they dont make the other movies...and if (when!) they do, they can include it at the beginning of The Subtle Knife instead. They were kinda testing the waters i guess.
I'm mad that they cut this out. It would have made more sense if they had kept it in the first movie. And I noticed a lot of things they cut out of the movie WAS in the trailers.
As for that nonsense of attacking Christan belief, I understand that they mentioned Eve & Adam and all that, but the movie does nothing of the sort. It seemed to pretty much cut out the parts where Christianity was questioned. I'm not saying they should keep attacking the book, cause the book was awesome, but the movie was way different.
well its not like the writer is lying in saying thatt the church did many hmmm... questionable things, for the lack of a better word, to control people !!!
Besides religion is just trere so people are afraid of something and dont do bad things not that it's stopping them lmao
everyone who says that this movie is for athiests or satanists, or something like "Oh my God. this movie attacks the christian belief. Boycut this movie" go and make suicide... THIS IS A FANTASY MOVIE!!!
I tottally agree with you. I got in a huge argument with my teacher because she went on and on about how this book 'kills God' and seeing it made me worship Satan, and I'm sitting there going, "CALM DOWN. It's a freakin FANTESY."
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i wouldnt reccomend this movie to any1 call me what u want religious or whatever but at least im not gonna pay money to see a frickin athieists movie!
If you're not willing to read that, at least study the history of your own religion outside of a book written for the necessities of a two-thousand-year old civilization. The book tells you to make up your own mind and not simply accept things. It tells you that it isn't satanic or anti-religious to think for yourself.
Anyway, enjoy not looking around you at the world. PS: Dinosaurs were real.
Nicole Kidman is awsome!!!! No her hair was not black but i thought her personality was awsome and of corse she is beautiful, so i thought she made a really good Mrs. Coulter, and yes i have read the book so i do know what i am talking about....
No, it enforces thinking for yourself and making up your own mind what you should believe in. Lord Asrael was an obvious atheist, and Lyra came to hate him, but she herself still believed in something more. The point is to find the fine balance in beliefs and enjoy life without stressing about organized religious traditions that don't make sense anymore.
You might try reading the book it's based off of. It speaks of the Church having done things countless times in our own history for the necessity of maintaining control for people's own spiritual good, in their opinion. I'm not speaking against the writer at all. The first book was fantastic. But there is plenty of religious quotation and symbolism, if you'd bother to look a little deeper.
Seriously, the movie is far more blunt compared to the books.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This movie was such a fucking piece of shit, easily the worst movie of 2007, no wonder it's bombing at the box office, and no wonder the critics completely trashed this turd! Phillip Pullman slings more bullshit than a busted sewer, and Lyra is nothing more than a whiney weak brat! Give me Beowulf over this bullshit anyday!
bombing out in the box office? last time i checked it was coming third in the ranks.
i found the movie awesome, even though it was no where near as good as the books of course :P
and finally, if you look a little closer youll find that the vast majority of people giving the movie bad reviews are either fans of the book who wanted it to be a lot closer to the book, and fundamentalist catholics who hate it for the principal of hating it.
i think they ended it that way because there are slightly less loose ends than the books ending. people are impatient when they see a movie, they dont want too much of a cliffhanger leading to the sequel :P
The Golden Compass has absolutely nothing to do with killing god. Its not like in the begining Lyra goes "Hey, lets go kill god today, that sounds like fun" That happens in the third book, and its not god himself, but a being that is NOT god, calling himself god.
You should get the facts straight before you go about criticizing and making false accusations about something. This movie is about a little girl who is trying to save her best friend. She meets people along the way, but in the end, she just wants to save Rodger. I know how terrible that sounds, it rocks me down -right to my core. (If you did not get that, its called sarcasm.)
Its people like you, people who have no idea what the actual movie is about and follow gossip as though it was written in the bible itself. I went to go and see the movie, and not once, NOT ONCE, was GOD ever mentioned, or anything about him. The thing that came closest would be dust, but you never actually find out what that is exactly. And in fact ***SPOILER***
That ending would seem even more confusing.. it doesn't tie it up at all either. But anyone who had watched the film, then decided to read the second book.. they'd be so confused. Why not just end it properly? New Line are fucking stupid and made this film feel rushed - the feel of it all is brilliant, yet they cocked it up big-style. Big Willy Style.
Chris Weitz wanted this ending. New Line stepped in at the last minute and said that they wanted it taken out and put in the sequel (if it's made). If the Subtle Knife doen't get made, then I would expect the full ending to be in a Special Features DVD or something.
WTF, you know i what i mean, i am talking about in a situation like people with "power" or "abilities" not like that. Person who made or trained you, such as in lets say...a.... ninja people, the master, cant lose to the student unless he becomes better or knows other moves, and the devil cant defeat GOD at all be cause he is all knowning, and you know what if you comment back your gay, because

for the fact that he didnt kill rodger :(
NICXNTA 4 years ago
he doesnt'?!?!??!
but then ....none of the second and third book would make sense!!! lyra's supposed to go save rodger from the world of the dead!!!
ChuppaChupBobbin 4 years ago
thanks for ruining the 3rd book for me lol
LeonaRulez 4 years ago
nah! not really coz i meant that she "goes" to save rodger. and basically that's the plot 4 amber spyglass. so i didn't ruin anything.
i didn't say he does get saved, i meant that the story wouldn't make sense if rodger didn't die other wise the books would be totally different!
i rest my case...lol
ChuppaChupBobbin 4 years ago
Lord Asriel (D.Craig,James Bond call him whatever you want :D) he kicks ass he is so badass! :D
Champione007 4 years ago
This sums up what a huge disappointment this film was if you love the book. The action is rushed, and characters and voiceovers are overused for exposition. You don't learn too much about the characters, either. They could have made the films Lord of the Rings length to allow the story more room to breathe. As for the ending, the makers of Lord of the Rings weren't bothered about the first two parts not having "proper" endings.
cbak12sg 4 years ago
The first movie had the right ending. I wish the second movie had as well (the original ending is a HUGE cliffhanger) but I guess they needed time to add Frodo nearly gets eaten by nazgul again scenes.
roninjoey 4 years ago
thats the same for any movie that is made from a book. A book will ALWAYS be better because they can go into so much more depth with characters and feelings.
LeonaRulez 4 years ago 2
Except this was a particularly bad adaptation, largely because they tried making it a super kid-friendly film, when the book series is clearly not meant for little children.
Goatmon 4 years ago 3
Not is this case...just look at the Harry Potter films. the books are around 800pages long and they still manage to make a well explained story that contains all the important scenes AND ENDDINGS!..and the golden compass is only 300pgs!!! and they skipped characters and important scenes and added things that never happened!!
Royalbip 4 years ago 3
I agree mostly with your statement. Except with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I read the book first and was pretty disappointed in the movie.
Duragorr 3 years ago 4
Fortunately the last movie will be splittet in two ^^
Tariksin 3 years ago
In fact, they DID go into more depth with characters and feelings. At least Chris Weitz did, in his screenplay and original version for the movie. But New Line has cut off all of the character and plot development, and the sad ending.
Damn New Line. There must be a director's cut to redeem the movie.
Grissha 3 years ago
If that was the whole ending, I don't see what's so sad about it. I know what happens with the boy but they didnt make any mention of it.
Duragorr 3 years ago
Uh well, it's sad because Lyra thinks she's saving Roger, but she's actually taking him right to his death, after she spent the whole movie to rescue him.
The actual ending would change all the feeling of the movie and the sense of Lyra's mission. A tragic turn, instead of the theatrical version's anticlimatic ending.
And the sequence of the Aurora must be so great...
Grissha 3 years ago 3
Yes, but unless you read the books you still wouldnt know that. With this as the ending it looks still like they were both safe.
Duragorr 3 years ago
I mean, they shot the whole thing, until Lyra crosses the aurora and all.
Grissha 3 years ago
you actually they may have just fucked up the entire series. what if daniel craig doesn't want to come and do the second movie? they should have just left the ending in so that way if craig wanted to leave then it wouldn't be all annoying cos if they put the final scenes in the Subtle knife and then when they film again they will need someone else. but that is only if danny craig is an ass hole and abandons it

aghhh! why didnt they keep the real ending in???!!!!!!!!!!
marisaofthe91 4 years ago
From what i understand, they didnt want to leave you hanging, in case they dont make the other movies...and if (when!) they do, they can include it at the beginning of The Subtle Knife instead. They were kinda testing the waters i guess.
larrieking 4 years ago
So what itf it attacks Christianity. Plenty of "Xian" movies attack other religions.
MercysHollow 4 years ago 2
I'm mad that they cut this out. It would have made more sense if they had kept it in the first movie. And I noticed a lot of things they cut out of the movie WAS in the trailers.
JustAPrayer 4 years ago
As for that nonsense of attacking Christan belief, I understand that they mentioned Eve & Adam and all that, but the movie does nothing of the sort. It seemed to pretty much cut out the parts where Christianity was questioned. I'm not saying they should keep attacking the book, cause the book was awesome, but the movie was way different.
JustAPrayer 4 years ago 2
If they intend to cut out all mentions of Christianity they're going to have a bloody hard time doing the Amber Spyglass
doubleblink 4 years ago 3
Haha. Yeah, that's true.
JustAPrayer 4 years ago
Im prettty sure Chis Weitz had said he intended to keep religion n the sequels if they get the chance to make them.
SeymoreOmnis 4 years ago
That's really interesting, and would make a lot of sense, can you tell me where it was you heard it?
Zepheriah 4 years ago
well its not like the writer is lying in saying thatt the church did many hmmm... questionable things, for the lack of a better word, to control people !!!
Besides religion is just trere so people are afraid of something and dont do bad things not that it's stopping them lmao
julia2030ce 4 years ago 2
The movie and the series to it rocks, but I have to admit, I was really disappointed that they cut off the ending in the movie.

I tottally agree with you. I got in a huge argument with my teacher because she went on and on about how this book 'kills God' and seeing it made me worship Satan, and I'm sitting there going, "CALM DOWN. It's a freakin FANTESY."

soccerrulesanunoit 4 years ago
Talk about eyes wide shut. The first book makes you think, the movie doesn't give you that much credit, but the book is worth a read.
TheSkyAblaze 4 years ago
If you're not willing to read that, at least study the history of your own religion outside of a book written for the necessities of a two-thousand-year old civilization. The book tells you to make up your own mind and not simply accept things. It tells you that it isn't satanic or anti-religious to think for yourself.
Anyway, enjoy not looking around you at the world. PS: Dinosaurs were real.

Atheism is normal, Christianity is what is enforced in the world.
HaroldMcdarold 4 years ago 2
you're so right it's not even funny
apollosapprentice 4 years ago
More like spirituality is common, and organized religion is the norm. Atheism is the lack of either.
TheSkyAblaze 4 years ago
No, it enforces thinking for yourself and making up your own mind what you should believe in. Lord Asrael was an obvious atheist, and Lyra came to hate him, but she herself still believed in something more. The point is to find the fine balance in beliefs and enjoy life without stressing about organized religious traditions that don't make sense anymore.
TheSkyAblaze 4 years ago 2
what does this movie have to do with religion??? omg. you might as well say its not christian to read Harry Potter books. oye people. Chill Out.
hahabaha1 4 years ago
You might try reading the book it's based off of. It speaks of the Church having done things countless times in our own history for the necessity of maintaining control for people's own spiritual good, in their opinion. I'm not speaking against the writer at all. The first book was fantastic. But there is plenty of religious quotation and symbolism, if you'd bother to look a little deeper.
Seriously, the movie is far more blunt compared to the books.
TheSkyAblaze 4 years ago
anyone here read the book?? they got sooo mmuch wrong!! her mothers hair is black, for one. whenever a movie is made based on a book, the movie sucks

Give me Beowulf over this bullshit anyday!
willhunting1995 4 years ago
the movie was awesome!
SPYTUBER23 4 years ago 4
bombing out in the box office? last time i checked it was coming third in the ranks.
i found the movie awesome, even though it was no where near as good as the books of course :P
and finally, if you look a little closer youll find that the vast majority of people giving the movie bad reviews are either fans of the book who wanted it to be a lot closer to the book, and fundamentalist catholics who hate it for the principal of hating it.
metalheaven 4 years ago 2
Why did the ending not end at the part it was supposed to end at?
Hiltoninchains 4 years ago 3
i think they ended it that way because there are slightly less loose ends than the books ending. people are impatient when they see a movie, they dont want too much of a cliffhanger leading to the sequel :P

"they suposidly kill god you cant kill god its impossable"
As the inability to spell sweeps the nation, so does the notion that events that occur in fantasy novels have to be possible.
rolgin5 4 years ago 2
apparently it is impossible to spell correctly or think coherently.
mdelrossi1 4 years ago 2
The Golden Compass has absolutely nothing to do with killing god. Its not like in the begining Lyra goes "Hey, lets go kill god today, that sounds like fun" That happens in the third book, and its not god himself, but a being that is NOT god, calling himself god.
Kalterwolf 4 years ago 3
You should get the facts straight before you go about criticizing and making false accusations about something. This movie is about a little girl who is trying to save her best friend. She meets people along the way, but in the end, she just wants to save Rodger. I know how terrible that sounds, it rocks me down -right to my core. (If you did not get that, its called sarcasm.)
Kalterwolf 4 years ago 3
Its people like you, people who have no idea what the actual movie is about and follow gossip as though it was written in the bible itself. I went to go and see the movie, and not once, NOT ONCE, was GOD ever mentioned, or anything about him. The thing that came closest would be dust, but you never actually find out what that is exactly. And in fact ***SPOILER***
Kalterwolf 4 years ago 3
the first movie doesnt speak about god much but the second and last its about defeating the authority which is god to them u see
atown2k3 4 years ago
Dust is Consciousness. The ability to know right from wrong, the ability to thing freely.
Its people like you that voted for bush, and believed that there were Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. Lemmings.

AdamsHouse 4 years ago
Chris Weitz wanted this ending. New Line stepped in at the last minute and said that they wanted it taken out and put in the sequel (if it's made). If the Subtle Knife doen't get made, then I would expect the full ending to be in a Special Features DVD or something.
