I strongly recommend the extra dogslot modification to the game, it let you use dog as a summonable pet instead and this allow you to keep him in a full party. Just up the difficulty if it gets to easy thou.

@jembalang42 If you start off as a human, you get the dog already, but if you're someone else, when you get to ostagar, you talk to the guy near the fence with the dogs in, and he asks you to find a flower for the dog so it can live, after the battle, yaddy yaddy yaa, he comes running to you because he has imprinted on you :D

and then you fight the darkspawn infront of you with it :L

@s0meNo0b No. Human noble is the only one that starts with the dog, but everyone can have the dog. For anyone other than the Human Noble, you just need to do the quest to help the houndmaster cure the Mabari when you get to Ostagar(getting the flower from the wilds). Then, when the whole of Ostagar is concluded, and you head for Lothering, you'll run into the dog on the road.

When you get to the Greay Warden camp at Ostagar, there is a guy like right past the front gate who is like "This Mabari is sick, can you help him?" And just say yes and agree to find the flower and then bring it back to him. After the battle Dog will find you, and you keep him! Name him something dirty if you wanna have fun... "An asshole barks playfully." it never gets old.
