cool vide about a year a go I had the same problem with a proview 22 inch monitor and replaced a few capactors, and then about 6 months ago I got gave a 42 inch hd tv that went out he had taken it in to be repaird they replaced the caps in it and it worked for like a week and went out again he spent 300 bucks for a week of tv and he gave it to me for parts me I just ordered the power bard for it and have a new workign tv and it retails for 2500 bucks. nice tv.

Upon research I found some websites saying that a very dark image like that is likely to be the inverter, but then other websites say it's more likely to be a dead bulb... So which one is it, really?

@Matrix803 that can be both... there is no general solution.

@Matrix803 on test you can do is get a bright led flash light and if you can power it up but get a black screan shin the light in to the screen and if you see and imige it can be the inverter and if it is a bulb you will most likly get half light not all and they both are pretty easy to replace.

i do believe that my inverter is dead according to the simptoms that i've read..but the thing is,if i keep the brightness level to the very low,i still manage to get the lcd working but it was a pain to my eye,once i increase the brightess,the lcd goes blank again..so is it really becoz of the inverter,or the bulb,or is there any other reason?

I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 and I need to replace the inverter because the light on the screen flickers and then goes out. I can see whats on the screen after the light goes out but its extremely faint. I can get the screen back up by closing the laptop and waiting a few seconds before reopening it. Considering that my PC is different than whats used in your demo, do you think my inverter will also be at the bottom of the screen and would I be able to replace it as easy as this video showed?

@pabscara yes, the inverter is ever at the buttom from the screen and you mostly just need th demount the lcd-front bezel.

So I got the inverter online for 2 bucks,I'm already to install it and one of the screws on the side of the screen is stripped and I can't get it out,therefore can't get the screen holder off that covers the inverter. Any ideas,the screw is so small and it is trashed. Please tell me I don't have to pay 75 bucks to get it opened when I actually know how to fix it.lol. Your vids save people a lot of money. I just fixed my wife's laptop, needed inverter. I found hardly any shop willing to sell parts, just the service. I had to either order online or drive 75 miles for my part. I chose to drive because I needed it ASAP. So $14 and a two hour drive later my wife is happy.

great video.i have a similar problem with my laptop which shows vertical black and white stripes . it works fine with an external monitor and sometimes when i change from the external monitor to the laptop screen it works. i can't change the screen resolution and i cant install the graphics card drivers. any ideas on how i fix this problem? thanks in advance

actually it will only display rainbow color. i guess no problem with the OS.

hey my laptop monitor goes black for random times and then goes back again. when it goes black I can still see the document behind but the screen is black. Sometimes it come out after random time or I have to reboot my laptop. Do you think it is a inverter issue ? thanks

My 6 moths old sony laptop has started to show the black screen, but as in dim because I can still see the OS running. Just few hour I turn back on, it repeats the same synmtom. But now I am using it seem to be fine.

@dodgevipercool I think your problem is the backlight cause my backlight comes on for a few seconds then shuts off. If yours don't come on at all then its probably the backlight.

Thanks, great video. Before I buy an inverter I want to see if the one I have is plugged in right. Since mine too gets very dim after a couple of seconds. But the screw on it is too damn tight, I don't want to break it.

Thanks so much for this video. My IBM was having this problem with the backlight shutting off completely. I took the face of my LCD off like how this video shows and tested my laptop with an ext. monitor. The inverter got incredibly hot just before the screen would finally dim.

Just ordered a new inverter for $7 on ebay and look forward to fixing my computer. An older laptop of mine had a similar problem, perhaps I'll try to fix it, too. Thank again!

hey man, i was having the same problem as vredemack, where my screen comes on for a minute while it loads, then goes black, however i can see faint images of my desktop. I hooked it up to another monitor and i can use it that way. I already replaced my inverter, however it still does the same thing as the old inverter. What do you suggest i look for when i'm looking for a loose or disconnected wire? Could it possibly be my backlight, and if it is my backlight, how do i replace that?

hey great vid. thanks for the awesome advice and tutorials. but my problem is my LCD is fading. i have to hold it a certain way just to keep the screen on. and sometimes it doesn't matter how i hold it it just doesn't appear clear. i don't know if the inverter will fix this or what it is but i feel i could do this myself. by chance do you know what might be happening?

@cjdistheman1 than you have a damaged graphics! you need th change the graphic card or the whole mainboard, if the graphic is on board.

I replaced the inverter and it didn't fix it. My screen comes on for a min then goes black. I'm on it right now threw a external monitor and it works fine. Could I have a loose wire somewhere?

maybe a loose wire, yes, or a damaged flashlight, or a damaged display.

Was it the same error with the old inverter? That 1 min work and then it goes black?

@vredemack I had the same problem -- when it acts like this bad power supply capacitors are often the problem. the tops may look bulged or domed like they are ready to pop. if this is the case your lucky because with any luck all the troubleshooting is done fo you and all you have to do is replace them, but if only two or three out of six or seven are looking bad, its strongly suggested you replace all of them cause as they age they will all go eventually - there aree vids here on this--

@yambo59 Also, caps are cheap, make sure to get good quality (hi temp 105*C) capacitors such as the green ones from parts express, they will handle the heat of the power supply heatsinks much longer. Check the cap values in uF and volts. The uF must be the same but the volts can be a little higher but never lower - for example, if the cap you want to replace is a 1000uF 10volt, you can use a 1000uF 16 volt as I had to due to availability. Watch the lead polarity, negative has a stripe.

if you see something on the screen when you look closely it's a defekt from the Inverter or backlight (mostly the inverter). but go sure and go somewhere to a frend who have a external monitor and try it. if you see something and it's only the Inverter or backlight. this is much cheaper as a defect mainboard!!!

When you go near to the screen and you see something, than it is the inverter or inverter cable.

When you see nothing, but hear the windwos (or linux, mac os) sound it's the display or display cable.

When nothing happen (no sound, no noise from booting HDD) it's the ram, cpu, mainboard or graphics.

could be a number of things... Video card may be damaged. Connection from your card to your LCD may be damaged. Actual LCD may be damaged. Do more investigation and narrow down the cause.

When there is a damage by water, it can't be say whats damaged. It can be all: Inverter, back light, display. You must try it to find out. If you not have the parts to check it, it will be cheaper to send it in, as buying the whole parts only for testing.

I've never seen this problem, sorry. But maybe its only a loose contact. Try to disassembly the panel and check if there all right with the button or the cable.

Next time we have a M3438G in our factory i'll look what the problem can be.

Our factory is in Germany. And in Germany there is the "z" and "y" key changed. I think because in Germany we don't need the "y" key so often like in USA, Canada, England, ...

So the keys are in the right place ;-)

The screen of my laptop (macbook) is having the same problem, but it turns black only when it is opened at some angle, and sometimes it will just suddenly turn black.

When it works sometimes its not the inverter, only a loose contact or a damaged cable. So mabye you must only open it and look if the inverter cable right pluged in. But by macbooks the inverter is below the topcase, so take care by disassembly. I advise you to watch our video where we change the display from a macbook. Sometimes the cables are not right pluged in, than it works, when you only plug in the cable again. That can happen ...

Or you must buy a new cable and try it...

It's the Inverter! First check if your inverter switcher is working. (in older laptops there's a little button near the screen, in newer ones a magnet in the screen bezel assembled)

Then check if the inverter cable really connetet to the screen and you don't have a loose connection.

If all right with the switcher and the cable you probably need a new inverter.
