  • Hi Logos! I have some questions about ear training. I am very confused about the key signatures bit. You say it will makes ear training a lot easier but If I am not reading from music how will knowing the key signatures help me? And how am I supposed to identify what key a song is in just by listening to it? I find music theory a rather intimidating subject so bare with me. Thanks.. btw love your covers

  • @infernalphast9 thanks - great question. Check your inbox! Thanks

  • thanks

  • a pop/rock singer who uses lots of chords and interesting progressions is Gino Vannelli.( check out any of his Youtubes ) If you can get past his occasional 70's flamboyance-thing, and listen to the chords he plays; you get a wonderful example how he uses them to finely texture his music--and how each one of his songs shows a unique utilization of chords.

  • in C major the 7th is B Natural not B flat remember te doh

  • @chrlmack Hey brew...

He was going through the different QUALITIES of the chords in a key signature (C major was the Example)...

He didn't mean Bb 5. He meant B natural (minor with a flattened 5th)... It's a 1/2 diminished chord... and the 7th chord of the C major scale...

Just thought I'd point that out....

    All tha love man,

    Peace

  • The Best!! thanks!

  • Great! Thanks for all your hard work putting this together. I am in the midst of learning all these chords by ear up to 9ths for my uni exam next week. It has helped me to identify a word that each chord reminds me of, for instance Maj 7 sounds pretty to me, and min 7 contemplative, dom 7 sounds twangy. Do you agree with these descriptions? I would like to hear some of yours? Also is there a part 2. Cheers!

  • @LaSolarGuitar Thanks! Glad it has helped you and good luck with your exams. Well, it's an interesting point you raise about the characteristics of chords. Traditionally a major 7th would be painful, but now it is used a lot in love songs - which probably says something about us as modern people. Inbox me and I'll go a bit more into it, there's not enough space here!

  • thanks phil colins..

  • @jet07son haha, phil collins? Why's that!

  • just wonder where PART 2 of this video is??

  • @RoathRipper You know that's a good point. Let me do that!

  • Very good beginning lesson.

  • That was very helpful. You're a good teacher. Do you have (or will you make) any videos for Steely Dan where you go through the song chord by chord (as their piano player plays it).? That would be extremely helfpful because it would show theory in practice..

  • Nice lesson. You have a very relaxed deliberate delivery.

You're right about the circle of 5ths & the relative numbering of key sigs. It makes it a whole lot easier.

This helps me: the 3rd and 7th provide the color to the chord, while the 1st and the 5th sort of establish it. When you get to the ninths and higher chords, I always remember 7+2nd is 9th and 7+6th is the 13th. Makes it real simple for us mathematically minded souls to understand.

    Looking forward to part 2

  • Thanks for that.. I am a singer, but a little confused, I have always listened to the bass line for the key of where to sing, but you mention the chords, which are about the sound and emotion, but where would the vocal melody line be in a chord in the middle?

  • Thanks a ton for sharing your knowledge. It was very useful for me.

  • Glad to hear it, thanks very much :)

  • Not bashing you or anything.

I just honestly think either someone has the ability to or not.

Kudos to you for bringing this knowledge about though, take care.

  • I think people either have the desire to do it or not; I think its all down to this: If there's music in your head all the time and you're always trying to 'work it out' it will be no problem. Thanks!

  • I disagree, just about anyone can develop good relative pitch with hard work.

  • Good pitch doesnt mean it's a good song nor the person can make good music.

As long as a persons willing to try, then that's all that matters really.

  • @stevieVantanna Yes I think in the vast majority of cases this is true. Some people really seem to struggle but often by connecting intervals to simple tunes, it can be quite easy I find.

  • Here it is Time out of mind piano break (near the end of the song): hope it helps you to find main riff and verse chords and voicings. Amaj9 Dmaj9 C#m7#5 Bm7 C#7b9#5 F#m7 Bm7 C#m7#5 G/C C/F D/E Amaj9 Dmaj9 C#m7#5 Bm7 C#7b9#5 F#m7 B7b9 E7 A6 D/E the last E7 A6 Enjoy it! Can't find the main riff voicings...Maybe now I'm going to be mad.....
  • Haha I replied the main riff voicings to you on someone else's video! Didn't you get it? Thanks for that though!! xD

  • Thank you again for your fastanswer!

I really enjoy you could make Time out of mind, that piano riff is really catchy!

  • Hi, that's good, but I need voicings for ninth, eleventh & thirteenth chords....

    Really need them....

    Thank you!

  • wow ^^ kudos to you- his is a very instructive video- the longer way of learning 'playing by ear' is to have your piano teacher not turn up for lessons for a year, and you'll learn to play new things you've heard on the radio, rather than read from a book :) btw, i dunno if you mentioned, but humming/singing the tune can help you out too.

  • lol yeah I agree!! Sounds like a very good way. I totally agree, you gota be able to hum the tune first, I should have mentioned that! Thanks v much for nice comment :)

  • you've inspired me to upload something of my own- it won't be anywhere as good as yours... I can sort out chords and stuff with the right hand, but my left is crappy :P usually the same note in two octaves... gah. how can you get a fancy left-hand going?

  • No that'd be great!! Man thats just what I do nearly all the time lol ... but actually a lot of bassists don't like too much in the lh so don't worry about it I say :D What you mean by a fancy left hand? You can put nail varnish on/have manicure you know lmao .. sorry :P

  • XD you're just as crazy with me!! hahaha! the kind of music I play I have to think about it, then sort out the whole thing slowly... nowhere as good as you- stuff like movie soundtracks- princess mononoke, final fantasy, naruto, disney movies, phantom of the opera... the ccasional old song :P i dunno how to catch it on vid, tho. All I have a re audio recording :)

  • Haha if I'm as crazy as you I *must* be doin okay :D

  • is that sarcasm :O or is that a compliment.. from logos?

  • ooh you know, a bit of both hehe (but mostly a compliment I must admit!)

  • you're getting verbally poked for that *poke* XD

  • You better get uploading something Inky.. or I will do it for you :D

  • uh oh.... NOOOOOO!!!!!

  • aww you shouldn't be worried about it, you play piano so well! ^^

  • Are you Scotish?

  • Haha no I'm not :p do I sound it? I'm from the 'Black Country' in the middle-ish of England... are you? :D

  • Wow man thanks for that!!!

  • I can *sing* songs by ear... ;o)

  • Well thats all there is to it :) so, you just use different tools

  • hey nice tutorial and very detailed but u think u can show on the keyboard wat ur talkin about....i mean i know wat ur talking about but for the ppl out there can u plz show them on the keyboard plz???
