There were multiple charges in the wing and fuselage. They were remotely detonated from the ground. The sequence was to represent the plane being stuck in the wing first then a larger explosion to follow in the center fuselage.
This was intentionally destroyed for the sequence. At the time this was the largest free flight model U2 jet to be used in a motion picture. It flew in approximate a 1 mile circle prior to being detonated from the ground by Radio command.
Ah, it's for a movie! Yeah, I thought it seemed a bit strange to do all that work just to blow the thing up, hehe. That would have been strange.. : )
