@jubsjobs90 Ummmm the cubans had nothing that long range to shoot it down. The cubans bought there bombs for Russia. There for we used the plane to spy over cuba and russia. In fact a U2 plane was shot down by the russians. Get your facts straight.

looks like the explosion starts in the wing at 4:22

There were multiple charges in the wing and fuselage. They were remotely detonated from the ground. The sequence was to represent the plane being stuck in the wing first then a larger explosion to follow in the center fuselage.

This was intentionally destroyed for the sequence. At the time this was the largest free flight model U2 jet to be used in a motion picture. It flew in approximate a 1 mile circle prior to being detonated from the ground by Radio command.
