Sometimes it was fun to lose a mission or two so that the next ones would be harder. In the beginning of this game, Blair has the choice to help a guy in a bar fight (this bar) or not. If you don't help him, that same pilot won't help you later on
Actually it's not "poor" performance that bring about this end.
This ending reflects making violent choices during the game (such as referring the shipyard to the rescue missions, abandoning Catscratch and using the flash-pak on the Ella Superbase). It suggests, quite powerfully, that Blair, in defeating Tolwyn, became the next Tolwyn.
You would notice that this is portrayed by Panther being in the "good" ending and Hawk being in this ending.
Yes, that's Mark Hamill. He played Luke Skywalker, Blair from WC3-WCP, the Joker in the Batman animated series, and the main villain in 'Castle in the Sky' as some of the memorable roles for me.
@DaveCaspermeyer Wow, I didn't realize that Hamill live-acted in videogames, too. This is quite interesting, still I definitely like him best as Luke Skywalker and yes, especially as Muska. He REALLY made CASTLE IN THE SKY truly worthwhile. He and Cloris are the reason I LOVE watching the dub, regardless of anyone telling me that I am committing a crime against humanity by doing so.
I'm not sure exactly how you get this ending, but I suspect ejecting and/or failing missions will get you to see this ending. But that begs the question, why do you want to fail?
@DaveCaspermeyer i think you get this ending if you eject and fail on the missions where you have to get the biochemist and/or the space lab, it makes sense that tolwyn is upset at blair for failing either one of those missions, its a very crippling blow for the black lance
@DaveCaspermeyer The only way I've seen to get it is the eject on the fourth mission. Regardless of your previous performance you get this ending if you don't rescue the bioscientist because she's critical to the story later.
Tolwyn in the game books goes from saving the light carrier in End Run to this:a real heartless bastard. Whats the POINT of this ending, anyway. Games should NOT end like this, or there should be one standard you lost ending. And Blair should not have to be the only one who can prevent the war. Maybe the fleet should be going to attack when Tolwyn gets found out. Endings like that make me SICK.
I think there is a point to something like this. It makes you hate him, they do their best to make you hate him the whole game. So it makes it all the more rewarding when you finally get the good ending.
@Colombianyoyo He could have then taken the opportunity to do what he wanted: Punch Tolwyn for all the crap he's done to him since he is a civilian now. Sure, he would have went to jail, but some things are worth it.
The look of contempt Malcolm McDowell gives Hamill when he offers to shake hands is priceless.

haha, what a stone cold bastard Tolwyn is, not even shaking his hand. Looks like Blair ended up in Jaynestown, drinking Mudder's Milk though.

hey, isn't the actor playing Blair the guy who played Luke Skywalker in SW? I mean... he seems to be somewhat similar looking at his face.

Endings like this exist because some people simply don't belong in the cockpit.
