The atmosphere is NOT why we cannot see stars in the daytime - it is the presence of the sun. If that were the case we would not see stars at night!

Neil Armstrong had been in space before Apollo 11, a veteran of the Gemini and X-15 programs. If stars would have been visible under these conditions, he would have seen them and could have used them as the basis for any statements about stars from the moon, even if Apollo was a hoax.

John Young set up a remote controlled telescope on the moon when he was on Apollo 16.He had to put it in the shadow of the LM because the glare from the surface was strong.The telescope ,controlled from Houston, took photos of the Large Magellanic Cloud in the constellation of Dorado.

Anyone can duplicate what Neil saw. Go downtown in your nearest big city, with the glare from streetlights and hundreds of neon signs and look up. How many stars do you see? None. Even on a clear night, the sky looks pretty much completely black because of the light pollution. No streelights or neon signs in space, you say? @loperspest Yes it would but the only time that could occur is when the Moon is between the Earth & Sun or on the far side.The CSM pilot would experience that but my understanding is that NASA deliberately scheduled all of the Apollo landings so the astronauts would be on the surface during Lunar daylight. Shepard got a photo of Venus on Apollo 14. Canopus & Sirius were also visible and a couple more bright stars but that's about it in the Sunlight.

When they are on stage (as many people could probably attest) the lights make it very hard to see the audience, in fact most people can't see anything but darkness from the stage if the lighting is powerful enough.

Stars were visible and used for AGC navigation and visible in the dark side of PTC and on the far side of the Moon & while in the Earths shadow but they dont show up well on film when photographed in direct sunlight. The atmosphere is NOT why we cannot see stars in the daytime - it is the presence of the sun. The blue hue of earths atmosphere is nothing more than the absorbtion of wavelengths of light - it is not a magic shroud that prevents us from seeing stars. If that were the case we would not see stars at night!

If stars should be visible in daylight conditions in space, why would Mr. Armstrong say otherwise?
Neil Armstrong had been in space before Apollo 11, a veteran of the Gemini and X-15 programs. If stars would have been visible under these conditions, he would have seen them and could have used them as the basis for any statements about stars from the moon, even if Apollo was a hoax.
Instead of lying, he looks to me like a better rocket jockey than a PR junkie.

Anyone can duplicate what Neil saw. Go downtown in your nearest big city, with the glare from streetlights and hundreds of neon signs and look up. How many stars do you see? None. Even on a clear night, the sky looks pretty much completely black because of the light pollution. No streelights or neon signs in space, you say? No...but there is one really, really really big, huge, massively bright light that would drown out all the other lights in the sky. :o)

Something you may not know is that when you are out in space, in the direct light of the sun, the glare from the sun washes over the specially designed windows/tinted helmets. You are unable to see the stars because they are less than 1/1,000th the intensity of the glare from the sun.

Even if Armstrong never made it to the moon, he'd have to at least get into orbit.
He'd need to to film the extended free-fall scenes in the CSM/LM stack.
You just can't film weightlessness for that long at a stretch in parabolic flights.
This means he was a real astronaut, this means he had to be quite intelligent, flying the CSM and Gemini capsule wasn't for dummies.

@Za7a7aZ He is actually an avid enthusiast, as is James Burke. As a matter of fact he was the BBC host starting in 1968 covering Apollo 8, 9 & 10. They both later covered Apollo 11 together for the BBC. He does not believe in UFO's, paranormal activity etc, he is a scientist and astronomer and firmly believes the Moon landings were one of Mans greatest achievements.

@1MtnBoy I have this suspicion about Moore and Burke because I did watch the re-run of their BBC docu on Apollo-11. There they explain the astronaut-suit, escape-bunker under the launch pad and more. If I read between the lines of that docu I read how they want us to show how impossible it is, with the tech of the day, to land on the moon. I recommend you to watch that docu with such glasses on....

The cold war & space race fueled business & industry here and abroad and spurred the PC revolution we all enjoy today. If it were not for the Gemini & Apollo programs several communications & Computer industries would be years behind where they are currently and thats a fact.

Objectively considering the satellite and missile technology history of the day clearly demonstrates some of the facts in question. Curious that nobody questions similar photo's taken by Gemini crews the ISS or Shuttle even though satellites and probes were taking pictures back in 59 & 60.
Explorer, Ranger & Surveyor again in 62-67 as well.

This is being described horribly and unnecessarily complicated.
It is very simple.
Go outside during the day while the Sun is high and count the stars you can see or photograph in a short exposure.
It is no different in space, in LEO or on the Lunar surface itself.
Why would it be ?
Unless the CSM is in the Earth's shadow ( Apollo 8,14 & 16 ), You are in direct sunlight the entire time.

02 23 59 20 CDR: Now we are able to see stars again and recognize constellations for the first time on the trip. It's - the sky is full of stars. Just like the nightside of Earth. But all the way here, we have only been able to see stars occasionally and perhaps through the monocular, but not recognize any star patterns.

@loperspest Yes it would but the only time that could occur is when the Moon is between the Earth & Sun or on the far side.The CSM pilot would experience that but my understanding is that NASA deliberately scheduled all of the Apollo landings so the astronauts would be on the surface during Lunar daylight. Shepard got a photo of Venus on Apollo 14. Canopus & Sirius were also visible and a couple more bright stars but that's about it in the Sunlight.

In my experience, household lights been in view at the same time is enough to make it so I can't see stars, and think how much brighter a landscape lit by an unfiltered sun is.
Besides, why would he lie about this even if it was a hoax?
If stars should be visible in sunlight or no in space, he would have had an eyewitness account from his Gemini flight.
