I graduated Jan. 5th 1990 Plt 3091 Lima Co 3rd Battalion San Diego. Sr. DI Ssgt Agosto DI Sgt Brown DI Sgt Burkett DI Sgt Pinkney DI Sgt Pate. Parris Island is where they turn women into men hahaha!!
Graduated June 1989, Platoon 2033. Some POS went AWOL when we were at Camp Pendelton and told his mommy that he was being hit and so forth. There was an investigation, recruits were questioned, others like myself didn't provide any info, and our SDI and his team were relieved while we were in the field.
That jet noise brings back good memories. When Lindberg Field would get fogged in I couldn't sleep because it was too damned quiet. Het, how come none of those recruits are wearing their brainstraps? YOU THINK THE YOOOONITED STATES TAXPAYER ENJOYS BUYING YOU GLASSES??!!! GET IN THE CLASSROOM AND GIVE ME 50, RECRUIT!!! lol...3rd bttn plattoon 3091, class of 83. Oorah! And Sgt Folger, if you're readin, you're still an asshole.
Graduated bootcamp July of '87. PLT 3034. A couple of these DI's look familiar. Best decision I ever made. Worst decision was not re enlisting. SEMPER FI!
@TheUsassassin we used to have phases, and in 3rd phase, this was the first "proper" uniform inspection. the series gunny and up inspections were in alphas, IIRC.
When we were on the drill field, our senior would take us there at sundown and in third phase, we were awesome at drill! All you would hear is our seniors cadence and one platoon foot all hitting the deck at the same time. One of the most poignet memories of boot camp. As we marched, I was so proud to be becoming a Marine. 22 years later I still feel that pride and will at times bust out with my senior's cadence and my family looks at me if I'm crazy. Fuck em!!....lol!!
@westtrumpet7 one, and heel, and guide, and cut, basically a diddy that keeps the recruits together when doing the drill movements, we use diddys when practicing drill movements, when actually drilling we dont use diddys
It's funny how back in the late 1980s, the older Marines called us young Marines "the Pepsi Generation". Now the prresent generation of Marines would call us "Old Corps". Kinda how the WWll vets looked down on the Vietnam vets while OUR generation of Marines WORSHIPPED Vietnam Vets. It's a funny cycle.
yea but now all of the Marines vets dont even know what to say about this new generation...the past generations the vets had no choice but to join the Corps whether they wanted to or not but this present day generation of sociopaths who join and are willing to kill and die...idk you would have to talk to an actual vietnam veteran to see what they think about this new generation...GENERATION KILL
i remember the camie inspections and i remember when my father wore the v neck t shirts. My father is Marine Corps Vietnam vet too. I remember it very well Platoon 2063/ 26 January 1996 OORAH!! GOD bless Marines!
@cptcurk Yeah, after I got to Lejuene I had to get phone cards and go to the bowling alley to call home or stand at a payphone and keep chucking quarters into it.
@crow1701 Heck yeah! I remember doing just that! I used to call my parents - collect! Those were the days. I have a buddy who is currently a LtCol at Las Pulgas in Pendleton. He says the guys are not allowed to carry cell phones into the field. Uh, yea right. Marines will find a way to make things happen. Thank goodness for technology! (although there is much to be said about the "old school" way of doing things)

I was the Senior Drill Instructor marching the platoon (Hotel, '88-'90) and came across this video a few months ago by accident. I nearly shit when I realized someone had actually been walking around with a video camera! I'd have certainly taken my platoon elsewhere if I'd known . . . . This is great stuff!
@aschemann01 I agree. This brings back great memories. I LOVED drilling when I was in boot camp. That was the ONLY thing I looked forward to while at MCRD-SD.
lol i just got outta boot camp im may 09. this looks like a lot less screaming happens both with the recruits and the DI's but it seems like they are more anal with the cammies. cammies were never really that big a deal except on drill competitions. our inspections were in alphas. those were anal - PLT 1037 - winner of both the company and the batallian inspections ooh rah
@imustbebored2behere And even they didn't change until 2002. I spent the summer of '02 at MCRD San Diego. Lima Co. We were like the 4th to last company to wear the old cammies and black boots. By the time we got back to MCRD from Pendleton, it seemed like everyone was in the new cammies.
I remember Sax and our other 3 DI's very well with 2048. I ran into each of them while in the fleet. Sax in the Gulf at the port, Brandes just after Communications school, Terreforte ended up in my unit in Hawaii 3 years later and Robertson was the one to sign my DD214. :)
