erm, i'm 11 and this took me longer than half a year. i've been practicing this for so long, and i still cant get it perfect like her. great job rachel!! hope you become famous 1 day :)
@arivas713 , I couldn't agree with you more, she is a genius at the piano. I want to believe she is a prodigy! But It's your opinion that "our" country (you didn't specify) is in the trash. Assuming you meant the United States, please bear in mind that we also have a lot to be proud of! Our healthcare techniques are some of the best in the world, and our general quality of life is very high!
WOW. *clap*clap*clap*clap*. This kid is awesome. Definitely one to watch... I think we'll be hearing her name later, or seeing it on the cover of a CD or something.
Also, WTF? People here are REALLY slamming this awesome kid and belittling the absurdly large amount of work she has put into developing her considerable skill? You shouldn't be worried about her parents, you should be worried about your own for not teaching you proper manners and basic civility. Picking on kids is beyond low.
she is very talented i've been wanting to play the piano ever since i was little but never got the chance to so im happy to see someone who plays it worked so hard to get where they are now. the piano is such a beautiful thing to play and listen to
I became literally obsessed with this piece when I first heard it, especially the slower middle part. I listened to it every night for a few months. It is very rarely played and recorded. I have yet to hear a rendition of the full piece that is superior to Rachel's. Her rendition at the recital is interesting as well, with a few blunders, but also including some intricacies missing here. Thanks Rachel for inspiring me and my family's interest in piano music.
*look for those of u hating on strict asian parents i have to say i wish my parents made me take piano lessons when i was young, now all i do is look at youtube videos and wish i played the piano or i wish my parents pressed me more on education or learning another language instead of watching tv and eating junk food all day, if so then maybe i would now have fulfilling career instead of a crappy dead end job. i mean is it any wonder our country, economy and educational system is in the trash?
@arivas713 WELL SAID ! You got it exactly right. When I was a kid living in the East end of London, we had a piano in the front room of the house even though nobody could play it. World war two had been finished just a few years, and times were hard. The piano became my toy, and I gradually taught myself to knock out the pop tunes of the day At school, I was egged on to play the school piano. and was caught and punished for it, not encouraged. that's the way it is here.

i think while she is absolutely amazing for a 9 year old, the problem with little kids playing such large songs is the lack of emotion. but amazing, nevertheless.
hmmm asian kid doing amazing...not surprised. But then as far as I know they have quite the discipline and I only steryotype bc all the best musicians in my school band and orchestras were always the asian kids.
Hey, pretty much all Asian--more specifically Chinese parents make their kids play some sort of instrument. >:T It's not a stereotype, it's factual. It's about 90%--but I just pulled that stat out of my ass just now, so haha... I was forced to play the piano, violin, and was forced to take ballet and ballroom dancing classes. It's a cycle. Their parents did the same to them, probably. What many parents don't realize is that you have to let the kids themselves get into it. Take them to recitals.
@sdthird10 her doing something she likes as proven by the huge smile on her face right before the video ends is child abuse? I think letting kids play video games all day long or watch tv unsupervised, aka neglect, comes closer to child abuse than letting a child play an instrument and being involved enough in their activities to record it and post it on youtube. Oh, and feel free to scroll through the thousands of other posts and realize how redundant your comment is.
Seriously, there are too many racist comments here. Look, I'm asian. Guess what? It's true. Our parents force us to work hard and all. It may be tough, but we do have leisure time you know. Besides, you may hate it now but in the future , you realize that all the stuff you were forced to learn can help.
I know it did for me. My mom forced me to practice scales for hours on end. Every day. I hated it, but I hafta admit it helped me make my fingers more flexible and play the piano better.
@Vswchwrm Yes, I love playing the piano. Sure, I complained and threw tantrums when she made me practice, but it's because she made me practice that I had good results in my piano exams. It's also because she forced me to practice that my fingers are flexible enough to play tricky pieces. I don't get why there are so many people here who are so narrow-minded. Parents force us to learn, to study, to practice, because they care for us. Parents who let their kids do whatever they want are too lax.
@lavasgal Okay. I think all these 'narrow-minded' people are Europeans who don't understand the Asian culture. In Europe it is the mainstream to let your child discover his/her own talent. That's why some people think this is child abuse. But lets leave it, we are just different.
@Vswchwrm sure. But I'm not really talking about Europeans. I'm actually talking about most of the younger generation of today. They don't know how to be grateful for what their parents do for them. Even in Asia, many parents couldn't care less about their kids. it's just that the people who are famous for their achievements.... they had parents who pushed them hard and they live satisfying lives. Besides if you leave children alone, most of them wouldn't discover their talents.
@Vswchwrm And besides... I have a really close friend whose mother loved her, but let her do whatever she wanted and let her explore her own talents. In the end, she chose nothing. She didn't learn any instruments, art, singing, karate.... nothing. That was because she was too young to know what she wanted to do. Now, whenever she watches me play the piano, she wishes that her parents had forced her to learn, because skills like these can only be gained after years of perseverance.
I'm sorry but you sound stupid to me... those people aren't racists, they just have an extremely boring and repetitive type of humour. It's the same people you see making dislike jokes, arrow in knee jokes, etc. etc....
It's obviously meant as a joke; "asians...so good at everything". Maybe 1 in 100 is more than so, but who cares
Also people lacking self discipline, as in goal reaching, will do these jokes in a kind of "Sigh, I wish had/was practicing more!"
I am obviously not referring to those who speak in a 'joking manner', but those who criticize Asian parents and degrade them for 'forcing their children to learn things'
Furthermore, I don't agree with your opinion on people who 'lack self discipline'. No one is perfect, therefore they will always wish that they could do better. They will always think that they could have done better. Wishing that they had 'practiced more' doesn't mean they lack self discipline.
Screw all these racialists! Asian parents do deprive their children leisure time and put their children on bench even though they are not willing! That's why we have Yundi Li and Lang Lang!
no..asian PARENTS are good at depriving their children of a normal childhood. Seriously? What little kid would willing sit in front of a piano ALL day watching other little kids play outside? Not me. Nope.
@MidniteHasStruck why all the stereotypes? not all asian parents deprive their children of childhood, not all children want to play outside. just as not all kids want to sit in front of a piano to practise. i bet there are some who do! we're all different. but nothing tells us that this girl is practising all day.besides, she looks like she is enjoying the music, and she plays very well and has talent. if i did not like piano, no amount of pressure from my parents would make me play well.
ive just watched her playing nocturne!&all of you mentioning her being asian are very small minded people!does it matter what nationality she is if she can play so well?
So this proves it What ever the fuck you think that you can do or play there is some asin kid that can do 10 x better I say bomb the whole country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@biohazzardalice612 -what a jealous person you sound&if u see a young girl play like this then it should inspire you that anyone can do it-so fuck you!
you can obviously see this little girl is having fun with what she is doing. I hate how people judge these litte kids because they are so good. they usually say how they probably get up at five and work half of everyday on piano. myabe they like it! maybe their parents dont! THATS HOW I PLAY PIANO! lol. let the piano prodigies live on.
Totally genius. I am glad the spirit and enjoyment for piano music can be found in the younger generations. You can see that she totally submerge herself into the piece. Bravo, young one! At a age of 9, you play amazingly, at a age of 15, I don't know what else you havent achieved in the world of piano music.
she's struggling. the piece is too big for her little hands. how sad. but she does a great job under the circumstances though. her parents should be ashamed making her play something too big for little hands. composers did not write these pieces for children to play. they did write children's pieces, but this is obviously not one of them.
@PianoTHIS I just listened to several other performances and they all get too fast with the right hand and too heavy with the left. Rachel's small hands obviously do not permit her to do this. Find a 9 year old playing with more emotion than this...you can't.
@PianoTHIS Maybe she wants to play this piece, why do you think her parents 'made her'. What about people with small hands, should they play ONLY children's pieces? Shove your age/size discrimination back up the same place your comments originated.
this is VERY VERY incredible playing for her age. Not only can she play hard literature like this, but the plays it WELL! most kids that are gifted like her try to play stuff like this but they don't execute it successfully at all and they play it sloppy. She plays like a pro already! She has potential to do something incredible with music in the future!
nice kid. you are only good because you are an asian. isn't it great to automatically be good at everything when you are born, and not have to try????
@foottothenuts I see what you mean and to a certain level I back that opinion, it's just, asian are good at everything because of their devotion. They put something in their mind, and won't stop before the master it I guess. Or it gets stomped in, and they have no choice. whatever, devotion is the key word imo.
@foottothenuts i'm asian and i suck at piano, but you can tell this girls having fun at least. Can tell you one thing she worked her butt off to play this so don't go saying she doesn't have to try at all. You really have no right to snark on this kid it just makes you look pathetic. Try looking up other prodigy's on piano that aren't asian and telling them they're only good because they're german or russian or is it simply because she's asian that you think she doesn't work at all?
Dude...i hear ya bro. Can't really give ya any insight to why ppl are like that. My only explaination is that they come up with any other excuse for their own inadequesies(proly spelled that wrong). So they say it's some naturally inherited skill from someone race. Don't get me started lol.
@11765animation ur sooo right. im a 16 yr old pianist and not to brag people are amazed at the fact i dnt hav a piano but play like i practice 12 hrs a day, but when they actually recognize im a black male, their whole oppinion changes on how i am as a person and my perspective towards when they dnt even know me. Just be cause of what your race is doesnt show your intelligence or tenacity towards something in particuar MUSIC. Why must race always be a part of society
@11765animation The only right we have is to blame the parrent. They "usualy" (not always) Choose theirs kids future. But, they have right to choose it too. She is talentful, and she work lot hard for it, but, it is maybe not her choice, just remember that. (BTW, i can never say that she didnt work hard, cause everything in life need a work up to be awesome, and awesome, can descripe her at piano)
Hello to oyou, 17th- It certainly was a joke- I'm sorry if there was some doubt. Very facetious on my part- the ludicrous notions that there was some problem with this young lady's ( girl's) efforts in music was absurd, and I got sarcastic. Televison is nonsense, for the most part.
This is obviously totally amazing! And yeah, especially when it's played by a 9 years old girl. And a very musically mature performance.
But I can't help thinking what she must've missed to be able to play this so flawlessly. She should be sent out to play with the other children instead...

What makes it lovely is that you smile while you play it!!! You should email Juliard or Oberlin your videos so they can get first crack at you when your older.
rather than saying things like she's being pushed too hard or putting in some racial comment, i will say that this video inspired me to learn this piece. if someone can play something like this so perfectly at age 9, i can at least try my best to learn it. its amazing
What is it with the racial comments? There are plenty of kids of all race's that are prodigy's. There is a kid from Mexico that plays Santana better than Santana! Lets focus on the fact that she is amazing! Not on what race she is! Seriously?
She smiled. She likes it!

ajdicks 1 year ago
@PianoTHIS Maybe she wants to play this piece, why do you think her parents 'made her'. What about people with small hands, should they play ONLY children's pieces? Shove your age/size discrimination back up the same place your comments originated.

this is VERY VERY incredible playing for her age. Not only can she play hard literature like this, but the plays it WELL! most kids that are gifted like her try to play stuff like this but they don't execute it successfully at all and they play it sloppy. She plays like a pro already! She has potential to do something incredible with music in the future!

nice kid. you are only good because you are an asian. isn't it great to automatically be good at everything when you are born, and not have to try????
foottothenuts 1 year ago
@foottothenuts I see what you mean and to a certain level I back that opinion, it's just, asian are good at everything because of their devotion. They put something in their mind, and won't stop before the master it I guess. Or it gets stomped in, and they have no choice. whatever, devotion is the key word imo.

Djokosoetono 1 year ago
@foottothenuts i'm asian and i suck at piano, but you can tell this girls having fun at least. Can tell you one thing she worked her butt off to play this so don't go saying she doesn't have to try at all. You really have no right to snark on this kid it just makes you look pathetic. Try looking up other prodigy's on piano that aren't asian and telling them they're only good because they're german or russian or is it simply because she's asian that you think she doesn't work at all?

@11765animation
Dude...i hear ya bro. Can't really give ya any insight to why ppl are like that. My only explaination is that they come up with any other excuse for their own inadequesies(proly spelled that wrong). So they say it's some naturally inherited skill from someone race. Don't get me started lol.
guanxingpingyu 1 year ago
@11765animation ur sooo right. im a 16 yr old pianist and not to brag people are amazed at the fact i dnt hav a piano but play like i practice 12 hrs a day, but when they actually recognize im a black male, their whole oppinion changes on how i am as a person and my perspective towards when they dnt even know me. Just be cause of what your race is doesnt show your intelligence or tenacity towards something in particuar MUSIC. Why must race always be a part of society

freakmunkay 8 months ago
@11765animation The only right we have is to blame the parrent. They "usualy" (not always) Choose theirs kids future. But, they have right to choose it too. She is talentful, and she work lot hard for it, but, it is maybe not her choice, just remember that. (BTW, i can never say that she didnt work hard, cause everything in life need a work up to be awesome, and awesome, can descripe her at piano)

@17thknight
Best to you- and thank you for caring!
Dave

This is obviously totally amazing! And yeah, especially when it's played by a 9 years old girl. And a very musically mature performance.
But I can't help thinking what she must've missed to be able to play this so flawlessly. She should be sent out to play with the other children instead...

rather than saying things like she's being pushed too hard or putting in some racial comment, i will say that this video inspired me to learn this piece. if someone can play something like this so perfectly at age 9, i can at least try my best to learn it. its amazing

What is it with the racial comments? There are plenty of kids of all race's that are prodigy's. There is a kid from Mexico that plays Santana better than Santana! Lets focus on the fact that she is amazing! Not on what race she is! Seriously?

And she is probably as good in her school in many other discipline, at 9 y/o, that's incredible,
I love to watch you play Rachel , keep doing what you like best for the joy and example to the people of this world!... Love !...:-)
