Traviata - Ms. Netrebko displayed ample power, coloratura bravura with a marvelous tone Having recently heard Natalie Dessay sing Sempre Libera at the Met Gala, one was impressed by the legato nature of Netrebko's portray in contrast to Dessay's intentional staccato, fragmented phrasing interpretation. Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.

After all that dancing around, it's only natural that she'd want to make sure everything was still "in place"! (And what's with all the 'thumbs down' for this comment? Lighten up, people!)
Netrebko does these outrageous things, but she gets away with them because they work with the material, and more importantly, because she truly does channel the character, Guiditta.
It's more obvious in this video than some others because of the English subtitles.
Her critics usually ramble on about all sorts of irrelevancies. What matters is the total effect, which was abundantly clear from the audience's reaction.
Opera is showmanship, and Netrebko is a showman par excellence.
She is absolutely outrageous: she touches people, gets them to laugh, and raise the roof. It used to be called 'having the craic'-- but, as you so rightly say, those self-preserving Operatic Taliban, have decided she is bad for OPERA! Showwomanship with gusto and significant talent-- Yes/No?
Try this thought experiment. What Netrebko did is not as easy as it looks. Don't believe me? Just imagine another singer. She's alone on the same stage, with the same conductor, the same orchestra, the same audience. She tries the same thing as Netrebko, and not having Netrebko's flair, it misfires. Major embarrassment for everyone present.
She caught the traditional boisterous mood of the "last night" and lifted it higher. Even the conductor began to understand this event. Great entertainment. Brava!
Then You do know... You just don't know for you... You need to be told! So, I am telling you: you love it... So, enjoy yourself unbeknown to yourself!

Be happy for all those thums down. They are from people who don't really like operetta. With those thums you get how many they are.
