  • So realistic...how many of us have hidden our pain when love ends. Something The Platters express with highly charged emotional lyrics and silky voices. Communication of this caliber has become extinct from music, and from conversation, for that matter. Who has time and feeling to express themselves this well and this deeply when your latest text has just arrived.

If only those who experienced this era could somehow bring it back. Lord knows it will never be duplicated. Thank you for this.

  • hermosa canción para enamorar the plater en el recuerdo dan a conocer que el amor existe

  • How beautiful is this music! <3

  • I wish music could be so great today like it was ... But it is Impossible!

  • Great music. 30's - 70's.

  • This group could have easily been called Tony Williams And The Platters. Tony was the voice of this group. The Platters had hit, after hit, so I'm very surprise that Tony wasn't as successful as a solo artist.

  • @wilx218x Yep. Tony and Zola Taylor led the only lineup that was successful. Tony had a unique tenor and I'm surprised he didn't make it solo. Of course that happened with numerous great voices who started out leading vocal harmony groups for some reason. Another unique tenor I really liked was Joey Vann (Canzano) of the Duprees. A pedestrian tenor Mike Kelly replaced him and the group never had another hit despite their brilliantly complex harmonies. The modern Duprees are are a travesty.

  • quem sabe um dia o cantor seja aclamado pelo que sai do coração e acabe a cartolagem de musica. cantor é cantor, não é o berreiro de hoje.

Yes, this should be Obama's campaign song!

Freddie Mercury's version is far best however.

  • I cry when I hear this music, because we had good clean fun in the good old days. Never, never to return!

  • @Dragonbelly19 -- Me, too! I just loved the 50s. We had good clean fun and though we were poor I never felt in need of anything more. Well, for me it was the best decade ever...and I loved the Platters, Penguins, Satins, and so many others who were popular then.

  • @MyrnaMcGhie

    Hi,

I tried to tell my grand daughters about the life in the 50's and that's old time to them and laugh. But we know don't we!

  • @Dragonbelly19 -- Yes we sure do know. Well, you just had to there to appreciate it.

  • @Dragonbelly19 If you think for even a moment back then there were not people doing drugs and having unprotected sex with strangers then you are sorely mistaken. Just saying..

  • Comment removed

  • Really neat how they have the one pretty girl and she was dressed to the nines

  • Sadly, many of these great artists died in poverty. Great Find- Thanks

  • Listened to this wen I was 3 or 4 with my grandpa, im 16 now.

  • I Was "8" When This song Was Popular...

I Loved It Then And Still Love It.......

  • I used to have this single

  • Two different groups of "The Platters" performing in this video?

Tony Williams is the lead singer in "the Great Pretender", but who is the lead singer in "Only You'?

Actually, I think that the second lead singer (Herb Reed? or Sonny Turner?) sings "Only You" too fast.

  • @barrhavener ITS TONY WILLIAMS ON BOTH VIDS AND ON THE ORIGINAL SIDES - HE HAS A MUSTACHE ON ONLY YOU

  • omg pensava que era do Freddie Mecury essa música xD

  • It is UN American to dislike this group

  • I met one of the platters some years back. he passed three or four years ago.

  • Love the Platters!

  • como esta musica no hay otra. que bueno que la encontre.

  • this is real ,real music

  • Groups like this did more for breaking down racial barriers than anyone else. They were clean, polite and well dressed. On top of that, their music was so good how could you not like them. On the other hand, today's black "musicians" only hurt their race. Trash like them (and the white, liberal controlled media) only make blacks look like drugged out, sex crazed criminals. Sad.

  • Oldies Live Forever!

  • watching this in 2011

  • me encantan despues de mucho buscar los encontre!!

  • I am 20 years old lead guitar player that plays coldplay, u2, radiohead, oasis and the beatles, but fuck this song, i fuckin love this song! ... thanks to my grandpa for playing this one when i was a kid and stuck this beautiful type of song on my head :) fuck you lady gaga, justin bieber and miley cyrus... and yeah... im asian... i dont give a shit who sang this because this is a true talent and a brilliant song from this guys... very talented.

  • @MarkuzSergion -All the f words are not necessary to express your love of this song. I don't care if you are Asian or whatever-watch your mouth, ok.

  • @TheMel1950 I dont care who you are sinner or who ever you are mister holy priest ... Well im sorry if i hurt your feelings about it just because i said those words to express how i love that video, ,... oh ,,, i forgot your not the owner of youtube.... ill take that back... :P .... and yeah... watch yourself too... and all the things you have done in your life. I hate hypocrite people.

  • real music

  • @084033881025

Que músicas lindas. e que recordações nos trazem!!!!

  • special sounds ... special feeling .... excellent performance

  • :) but elvis is the king...still

  • this is still the only music

  • I wish I was black.

  • ISSO SIM É MÚSICA!

  • great fricken songs...........I LOVE YOU MAYNARD G KREBS :)

  • 65 people suck

  • i gotta have this and sam cooke's version on my playlist

  • Que grupo maravilhoso.Curti e dancei muito ao som de THE PLATERS, juntinho, sentindo ocoração do outro pulsar.Saudade, só quem viveu a época sabe o qto era lindo, maravilhoso.(Eulina Zaranza)

  • A great post, and thanks very much. However, it cannot be from1955 because there was no "Kookie" Byrnes before 1958, which his when the character was introduced on 77 Sunset Strip. Also, the character of Maynard is from the Dobie Gillis show, which first aired in 1959. In any case, it's great to hear Tony Williams and the group singing live.

  • As a 70 year old I find these comments great, the audio content was not to great but the harmony was there.

  • I have always thought it is for Freddie Mercury. Thanks for the post!

  • Fuck - I've just bought 250 business cards again.

  • If i had one youtube wish, i would like that ppl stop comparing music from all over the ages. Every generation has great singer and the things they are singing about are universial: Love death and everything in between. So stfu and just enjoy.

  • queen and elvis did these guys justice..never to forget them..

  • this is wonderful!!!

  • 65 pessoas de que não entendem nada de boa música....

  • Where do you think Freddie Mercury got his inspiration from in the first place?

  • What PERFECT PITCH! His range is sublime!

  • Great. Great. Great.

  • This is very close to how Freddie Mercury sung it i think. Class.

  • This group was my introduction to early Motown. Absolutely LOVE The Platters.

  • whyyyyy something like this exist anymore?? I don't understand.. it's a great collusion?

  • asum

  • u bet

  • This was music as it was intended! Thanks for the up.

  • I agree. THIS is singing and Rap is crap. The Platters were one of the greatest singing groups of all time. Beautiful songs and beautiful singing.

  • Canada 1955 omg

  • Sure beats "rap crap"

  • I have one word to say about this song.... amazing

  • a drift in a world of my own <3

  • This is REAL music

  • @sanounvonacopo I second that!

  • @sanounvonacopo I was born in 86' but I couldn't agree more with you! I wish I grew up in that time!

  • Can I get an updated Idiot count , last count was 64 and you can`t fix stupid !!!!

  • they are brilliant nothing to compare with them nowadays most of the groups and singers now need the help of electronics but dont get me wrong there are still some today that can sing, the pretenders were in a league of their own, also tony as the lead vocalist and zola as the backing made the harmonies so fantastic, take it from somone who knows and was around then.

    yoh they go on forever

  • i cant believe this song has even got people that would dislike it have they even got taste in music

  • Among the songs of my childhood and still among the best!

  • They were the best of all those early 50 groups. Great vocals and definetly the best tempo for slow dances. Of course, Tony Williams was the best. May he rest in peace!

  • @ssm070394 youve got that right they were fantastic nothing to compare with and also zola was brilliant as the backing and on her own, trouble is as someone as already said, a lot of music today doesnt come like this without the help of electronics to make their voices better, they were in a class of their long live music like this.

yoh from a person is old enough to remember them for real

  • Oscar it is for you !!! I love you !!!

  • They just don't make em like they used to. Piss off Kanye. This is real talent.

  • @NicciCoxify Ya the platters were one of the greatest of the groups with the best of voices. In those days you had to be the best to sell records not just popular.

  • is this the original version?

  • @murkaz.......I hope you are wrong .I hope there are not 62 nazis still alive .If there is they live in fear ....I think the 62 just don't like our music ,all we can do is feel sorry for them .

  • <3

  • One wonders if any of the original members are around. I saw a PBS "fundraiser" that had some singers that used the Platters name, but do not believe it was them.

  • music back then doesn't need autotune to sound great unlike the "baby, baby.oh",which has no meaning at all.

  • classic...

  • THANKS TO MY MON FOR SHARING HER MUSIC WITH ME, I LOVE IT!

  • Oh these tunes from my teenage years

  • This is my fav song of the Platter.

I can listen this over and over with the same interest and loving it more and more

  • Thanks! & Beautiful

  • Music, just isn't the same as it use to be. I know along with time music changes, but damn do I wish I was born during this era.

  • @VPTSV - I was fortunate enough to be in jr. high school in late 50s and dancing to this song. I loved it then and still love it.

  • All that's left is Herb Reed. They're all gone now. Great singers. I can vision a record players floating through a cold, empty space with "The Great Pretender" coming from an old Kenwood speaker. Warming up the Cosmos for the last number on the dance floor.

  • Gee-whiz, I am nostalgic of my 26 years, when I first heard these songs

  • Freddie Mercury totally missed the point.

  • Reed haha whoops :)

  • I just met herb reid yesterday! He's my grandfathers roommate at a nursing home :) he was so nice!

  • Faaa!!! I totally forgot about this one...

  • We loved this music and did not think about race just love and talent

  • ba

  • é de sonho

  • May be those 62 ppl clicked on the "dislike" button by mistake?!

  • Am an avid listener of this group. Are they all still singing? They have such good voices.

  • They are here in Brazil right now, and will remain until the end of the month touring around. I watched them yesterday on TV, being interviewed by Jô Saores and singing. They will perform in several states from North to South. It´s their 23rd time touring around Brazil and people are always eager to have them over. Welcome, and long live The Platters!

  • I miss the true music...

  • Man, this is real American music.

  • the 62 ppl that dont like this FUCK OFF.

  • One of the greatest groups for lovers to dance too. The greatest

    DiamondT

  • its a really good song.but i prefer Great Freddie's version

  • Great post.......Thanks a lot.

  • A música é linda, mas a participação dos backing vocals é hilária.
