Being a Mechanical Engineer doesn't mean you know anything about Porsche or german engineering. My words aren't meant to be valuable. You just can't explain with words the feeling, the difference between american car and german car.
On the otherside being mechanical engineer doesn't mean you have the money to drive of those cars. I drove (on a track) the ZR1 of a friend of mine and I wasn't impress. It's a good car, lot of power, but my 18 years old 964 was even if not better
@TheLordofShell that's your opinion. Some of the new Vettes running around San Diego have shown my 930 their tailights, but they have 30 years worth of technology on my car.
Mike i will try to clear this up the 930 debut was at the paris auto show oct 74 the car went into production and was sold to the public in spring 75 all the other items in my post or correct as well and those are the facts acording to Porsche factory
I have owned many Corvette's my favorite being a 65. Fun fun cars. I have switched over to 930's with twin plug mods. As a whole the Vette have bottom end grunt and the Porsche 60 to 120mph slam. Both great cars, but the porsche is more agile - even though either can be modded to fly. A modded 930 has so much torque that a pair of 345's on rear cant keep it grounded when dropping clutch to third at 100mph. fast fast fast.
Too bad this video turned into an "I'm better than you" debate. Seriously guys, who cares what's faster, each has their own distinct merits. It's a bit awkward though to compare a new car to one that debuted in 1974.
I love those 930 turbos. I've never been in a turbocharged car that builds boost as violently or frenetically as that car does. Plus, if you drive that car fast around a bend and live, it's very satisfying.
Never driven a Z06, I'm sure they'd be quite fun too.
first 930 was in 1975 260 hp top speed 153 mph europe usa 1976 3.0L exhaust gas turbo no intercooler
in 1978 the 3.3 L 300 hp 162 mph added intercooler was introduced I have owned both currently own a 1977 930 all with four speed trans until the last year 1989 then 5 speed trans these are facts jack
Just to clear up the facts there Jack... '74 was the first year the 930 as we know it was produced. The 3.3 Turbo became available in the states in 1986. The '88 model ( which I proudly own) was the last production year with the 4 speed tranny. Porsche produced a car for 6 months in '89 under the internal designation of 930, but it wasn't a true 930. They tried out the new 5 speed tranny for the carrera 2 in it. rare model, but the last year of the true 930 is 1988!
Wow, a car keeping up with another car at an HPDE. Big fucking deal. Not all drivers have comparable abilities at track days, and most are there to learn. Put me in a new Z06 and watch me be 2 minutes off pace because I don't know the track, don't know the car, and only have Auto-X experience.
This is a case of a guy in a slower, older car, keeping up with the DRIVER in a faster, newer car. Put these two cars in a wheel-to-wheel race with equally competent drivers and show me who wins.
Apples to oranges. I can't believe how intensely you folks defend your personal "favorite"... And I'm sure the majority of you currently own neither. ;)
Agreed - the Vette is a nice piece of engineering for the money. . . but there is nothing like a Porsche. The German engineering is all about doing a lot with a little. Making the most of the displacement in a fine tuned balance of weight and power.
Absolutely. The 911 has 6 decades of engineering experience behind it, and all those years it has retained the same basic design. The same cannot be said about any other car out there. It's a car that remains humble, timeless, and an aggressive competitor on the steet or track, be it a '73 Carrera RS or a GT2. The same cannot be said about a Corvette.
uhh, yes it can...the corvette was introduced in the fifties, and is currently a force to be reckoned with on the American Le Mans series, not to mention its many victories over the past several years. I'm a huge Porsche fan, but give credit where credit is due.
Despite being released in the '50s, the Corvette still isn't on par with the 911. I'm speaking only in terms of it's success as a race car, not the car's overall pedigree. The Corvette made a huge impact on the automotive world in the 20th century, there's no arguing that.
I find German engineering tends to be code for idiotically convoluted design. Not so much in Porsche's case, but the BMWs, Benzes, and VW/Audis I've owned or worked on tended to be the most unpleasant things I've ever had to maintenance.
@hjjfffaa The problem lies in the fact that you have to be smarter than what you are working on. I am a mechanic as well and find working on Porsches,BMWs,Audis,Mercs fairly easy and straight forward.. But then I am German:-) tschüß
Again, Corvette for the win. Porsche has developed a task force to figure out how to deal with Corvette. They'll have to mark down the sick premium and also cost of ownership.
First 930 with the 3.0 engine was born in 1977, then the 3.3 one was born in 1989, but US version are always less powerful than Europe versions (from 265 to 282hp for the most powerful 930 in USA compare to 300hp in Europe)
Vettes and Porsches are both great...they are just different answers to the same question. Neither of the designs are inferior, they are just different approaches...both very entertaining in thier own way. I used to have a C-5 and I just bought a 930...I wish I could have both at once!
Gotta laugh when a thirty year old Porsche which you can buy for 25 grand keeps up with a new Vette. And then you get the idiots who feel compelled to badmouth Porsche, who have won tens of thousands of races. What do you see every week at every race track in the country? Hundreds of 30 year old Porsches outracing new cars.
I'd love to see where Airox180 gets his data from. The Porsche 917 made over 1700 hp and ran non-stop for 24 hours at Lemans, placing 1st, 2nd, etc ... several years in a row - in the late 60's / early 70's. All from 5 liters of engine capacity. Never seen a 2000 hp Vette coming close to that. What are semi slicks? Race tires for a Kenworth?
I see that you have done your homework on porsche race history and a very good job you have done aswell. The 917 absolutely dominated @ lemans with it's normally aspirated 4.9ltr flat 12(560bhp), with a top speed of 248 if you could handle it since the car wanted to leave the pavement. It destroyed the canam series in turbocharged form(917/30), producing over 1550bhp on it's 5ltr flat 12. It is now known as "The Legend."
That 1550 hp although very accurate, was a conservative figure. It is no secret that with adjustable boost, the car could be tweaked while driving to make the additional hp for the Mulsanne straight. That car struck fear into the hearts of many top drivers who had the privilege of driving one. I'd tell you the story about how heat-softened fiberglass engine shrouds once got sucked into the engine under full throttle but there's limited space here.
id agree with u if u gave a reason or two to back it up... Like they suck because the dumb germans put the engine behind the rear wheels, or they're bug-eyed, or have looked the same for 40 years lol. I dunno, anything. Just dont say they suck cuz they suck
Compared to ur sucky ass car, The porsche will pulverize you. Another thing-GET A LIFE WILL YA! Porsches are so much cheaper to buy and they are so much more fun to drive.
To nocomment33, as a former 2002 Turbo owner, I realized that my lifelong dream car was overprised(purchase & maintenance) and underpowered at 420hp. The car was heavy and the slower than I had hoped. It was akward at speed in turns also.
To nocomment33, My dad had a 79 930 when I was in High School and I drove it to my prom. In the early 70's, he had a 59 Convertible D. All aluminum body, original knock off wheels, Nardi steering wheel, triple black. It was pretty much a show car, that he drove the piss out of.
To nocomment33, I had a 1970 914/6 with a 77 2.7 S motor and webers. I beat 911's all day long at Willow Springs. That was a fun car. Then I had an 83 911SC in 85. Hey if Porsches are your thing, then you probally don't mind spending money on them. For me, I just got tired of it. That's all. Many Blessings to you.
To nocomment33, I can tell, you have never owned a Porsche. You have never experienced the pain of writing large checks to the dealership cashier. I sold that car late last year, and bought a brand new silver ZO6 Corvette and love it.
...and do you wear a white/white tuxedo with a red tie holding a submachine gun? With a guy who doesn't have any videos and loves watching volvo's, i don't think so.
This is a really good clip although i don't get the comments. What is the point of some of them? It's a '06/'07? Z06 racing a what...'82 930!? If there is anything that needs to be recognized it would be the fact that an '82 porsche is keeping up with the latest product that america has to offer. So what if it has 420bhp or weighs whatever, IT'S AN '82 MODEL PORSCHE that definitely needs suspension tweaking. For Gods' sake, if your going comment a video, be valid with your points. Good run guys.
The Porsche only weighs rougly 2600lbs, and the Vette weighs 3132 lbs...the 50 hp that the Vette has over the 930 is far negated by its extra 532 lbs of weight...
And that is after GM put the Corvette on a diet...
So basically I suppose it would be like driving a Buick Roadmaster with a Z06 engine in it lol
You suppose wrong. Why don't you read webheads comment? He actually owns the cars. Only he owns a C5Z, not a C6Z that wieghs the same and has an extra 100hp.
0 - 60mph - there's nothing between them - top speed the vette has it by a whisker
2 different methods of creating 400bhp and high performance. The vette is more forgiving, easier to drive, the 930 is a bitch but ultimately more rewarding when you get it right - and very painful if you get it wrong
lol, putting that power down on a real track is a totally different story. and the boxer has plenty of potential... more than enough to match the p/w and get it effectively to the ground in a trackable manner.
Yeah but have you seen any other engine with 15000 race wins on it's record? Have you seen any other engine with 600 bhp while Aircooled?!! It's the most successful engine ever built and it's still contemporary even if it's essentially the same since 1964!!
I find the fact that GM ppl strained to get the Z06 up to its best time 7:42.9 while Porsche went on a couple of visits and made 7:40 911T and 7:39 GT3 :)
Still 7:42 is impressive though, I'm glad an iconic car as the Vette finally made it as a good car, but come on, Porsche's are better :))) [in the end it goes to which car one subjectively prefers actually]
Strained? It only took Jan 3 runs to get that time. He did it in one day and it was unseasonably humid, which would have taken the edge off of the LS7s 505hp. Under ideal conditions he could have done better.
The C6 Z06 did the Hockenheim Ring in 1.11,5. No other stock porsche, except the Carrera GT is faster. Even the 997 Turbo with semi slicks an the new GT3 RS couldn`t beat that time, both were slightly slower. The new Turbo without semi slicks was over 2 seconds slower than the Z06 per lap.
Gotta love Porsche's haha, i have a ls2 powered g body and my dad handed me the keys to his 80 Weissach, i laughed like a school girl all the way to fifth gear

P/W ratio is nearly identical. For now. Add more boost and fuel and.... ;-)

Oh and Turbo adds a lot of torque. I`d go for the Z06, the engine has far more potntial than the little boxer six.

lol, putting that power down on a real track is a totally different story. and the boxer has plenty of potential... more than enough to match the p/w and get it effectively to the ground in a trackable manner.

The Boxer has far less potential than the LS7. Never seen a 2000 hp Porsche.

Yeah but have you seen any other engine with 15000 race wins on it's record? Have you seen any other engine with 600 bhp while Aircooled?!! It's the most successful engine ever built and it's still contemporary even if it's essentially the same since 1964!!

"It's the most successful engine ever built and it's still contemporary even if it's essentially the same since 1964!!"
Ummm... I think you could say the same thing about the small block chevy. Only from 1956 instead of 1964.

That Porsche must be stronger. Z06 eats 997 Turbo and GT3, proven in Sport Auto magazine.

Homejengeneering 5 years ago
LOL, those Porsche numbers are total crap. Make it 7:50 and 7:49 and that is more realistic.

Strained? It only took Jan 3 runs to get that time. He did it in one day and it was unseasonably humid, which would have taken the edge off of the LS7s 505hp. Under ideal conditions he could have done better.

dont listen to everything you hear...porsche is overall better car. but vettes have come a long way in the passed 10 years...still not better ;)

Airox180 4 years ago
yeah and the 997 GT2 eats it back..

Shows you how good kumho tires are. And they most likely cost half as much as the hoosiers and will last almost twice as long.
