  • The boost pipes were not properly latched into their mouning tabs on the front of the upper timing covers which pushed on the timing cover and pressed it against the timing belt. This caused the timing belt to rub the cover the motor ran. I guarantee it. I did the same thing on my 2.7T when I changed my timing belt. Just make sure to carefully align the timing covers and boost pipes and you'll be good.

  • probably the waterpump.

  • @Didrik70 water pump r u kidding :)

  • my 2004 a6 2.7t does the same thing. it runs fine sounds normal then randomly out of no where it starts running rough sounds just like ur car i dont have a clue wat it could possible be. my car just hit 60,000 miles and its well taken care of ??? any idea wat it could possibly be ?

  • it sounds like a diesel :O

  • that sounds like the fan belt is frayed, my 99 a6 2.8 had that noise and then the belt broke It is slapping on the rad or the side of the engine block or something, mine did that and then it broke, because the tensioner gave out!! I thought it was water pump to but it was just the belt was frayed!! but that is the exact sound I had on my car!! The car was not affected until it broke so it sounds very similar to my experience!!

  • hahahaha. sounds like a lorry...

  • I don't know the word in English but I think that it has something to do with the valves...not the valves themselves but the part that is picking them up....!!!

I have a friend who has a 2.4i engine and he had the same diesel like noise and it turned out to be the valves!!! You can check that by removing the plastic cover of the engine and try to listen if the noise is metal like and coming from the (top of the engine??)!!

Sorry for the bad terminology but English is not my native language! :)

  • More data please! What was changed, tensioner, belt, idler, tensioner pulley, water pump, what? Is it the howling sound? Kinda sounds like a bad acc drive bearing or bad idler. Remove the serp belt and see if it changes.

  • OMG people it is not chains or hydrolics... It is simply the water pump. My car did the same thing i was freaking out it sounded like a diesel engine and i was scared to drive far from home. This is the water pump for sure, have you changed it along with the timing belt and other related parts, its a pretty big job find a cool mechanic that will replace the water pump, tBelt, rollers, THERMOSTAT because that will give up soon all at the same time even though theyre not bad yet. Write me back.

  • Okey, i don't know it's exact english word (swedish)

But i can almost guarrante that it's your hydraulic pressure valves (??? right word) That's the problem, the 2.8Litre engines sounds just the same when these valves gets bad.

Send me a message if you don't get what i mean :D

  • my audi 2.8 sounds like a diesel is this what you are talking about? and would it cost a lot to repair?

  • v belt looks frayed ? see it spinning....

  • you can see the rayed belt!

  • Shot in the dark here, as I know nothing about this engine but, could it be an overtightened timing belt tensioner seeing as the noise came about after the change?

  • its your turbo bearing nearing its end

  • wrong, you're an idiot

  • It is still doing it after 6000 miles icluding 4 days on the track. The car is doing just fine with no other issues but the annoying noise. Two service shops said is normal and nothing to worry about. One of the shops took it apart and chaged the water pump the second time.

  • get a good decibel meter and figure out where the sound is the loudest by trial and error.

  • @crystalgabber Hey, overall how is reliablility on your 2.7t?

  • @crystalgabber How reliable has this engine been for you? Looking at maybe getting an S4 but worried about all the problems...heard to have at least $2k in the bank ready for something to happen...

I'm a DIY mechanic and can do everything myself.

  • I am not sure it could be the chains beacuse it happens only after the car is well warmed up. Also, it started doing it right after the timing belt was changed. Also, I changed the water pump again just in case if it is DOA but nothing changed.

  • This sound is coming from chains.. they are a bit loose.. change them and the noise will disappear..

  • that sounds like a plastic loose, hope it's not the turbos,,with the mileage,, turbos go bad and the propeplers start to make funky noises..

  • Hey i own one, and i got the same noise ! maybe a little less nosier one but its there i was thinking about changing the timing belt but it just might be that someone did before me and that's only the plastic noise, hope its not the headers.

  • Yep, agreed with the dealer. They charge so much and they take so long. example, the timing belt and all that, about $1300 plus parts, are they f... retarded?? 13 hours of labor? WTF? I figured they would be masters since all they do is work with audis!!! I got all my job done at a NAPA mechanic for half price!!

  • Men, I recognize that awful sound. Its either an uncentered pulley wheel or headers gone bad, much like intrepid 2.7 engine.

    Pre-symptom to blown engine.

  • Yeah I heard its because they charge like 800 for the belt when you can get the whole kit for under 400 including the ac belt, gaskets, thermostat, and water pump. I'm real cool with the mechanics so they quoted me 2 1/2 hours which is like almost 300. I might go that way instead of dealing with it.

  • Holy crap what was that? I'm about to get mine changed soon so that is not a cool sound. How much was it or did you get everything done at the dealership? I'm thinking of buying my own kit and taking it to the dealership.

  • It turned out to be just the belt rubbing on the plastic cover that is protecting the timing belt. My friends and I did the timing belt job. Well educated people with many TB jobs. Took us 4 hours overall. Dealership price will be at least $1200 plus parts cost.

  • did it happen after you changed the belt ? i havent in mine maybe owner before me did and was it just some plastic ?

  • @crystalgabber

OUr 2004 Audi A6 3.0 is making the same noise. We bought it with 125K used like a week ago. So it is normal???

  • @crystalgabber bullshit. its is normal, not a big problem. There is one small part which controlling air coming from turbo. Just lift a plastic and you will see something in grey color and listing there. if its annoying so by new one. A had the same problem. this part a little bit cost...
