and yes, the Maisemore weir kills the Bore. It feels bottom about 200 yards downstream and dumps (like a shorebreak), on my record run I just leaned back and bounced up the weir and it was done. For the record, I was paddlin' a Soar Valley Surf Shoe - a kayak. The front half of that boat broke off and disappeared later that year at Gwenfor Beach in Cornwall :(
Wow - what a crowd, I did a 4 mile run in 1972, doubling Charlie Williams' 2 mile Guinness record of 2 miles. Then after celebrating in a Gloucester pub, repeated my ride at midnight. Was in the Guinness book for 20 years, lesson learned - if you surf 4 miles, you get to walk 4 miles back to the tent in the dark *sigh*
"They carried on to the source of the Severn" I don't think so. The weir at Maisemore usually stops the bore wave, although the tide will rise beyond this to Tewkesbury, and very occasionally to Worcester.
Wire5858: Officially, no. The record belongs to Sergio Laus in Brazil at about 6.9 miles. Steve King's 7 mile+ ride was never officially recognised. I think there was something fishy about the way BSA withdrew their authentication of the record at a time when one of their committee wanted a shot at the record. Anyway, both rides pale into insignificance compared to what was done ilegally on the chinese bore in 07, when an unlicesenced French/Brazilian crew topped over 10 miles..then got arrested
was there watching this happen. what they dont tell you is the best place to see it, is next door to the abbattoir. nice smell while you watch. great fun.
Where is this? Gloucestershire, Between Newnham and maisemore. Also on rivers Trent, Dee, Parrett,Lune,Kent and many others. Elsewhere in the world.. Amazonia (various large bores called Pororoca) France (Mascaret) on the Gironde and Garronne rivers,Turnagain Arm in Alaska, Borneo (bore=Benak), and the big mama of them all, the Dragon in China, at Hangzhou, on the Quiantang river..recently surfed by youtube user serginholaus..check out his channel. He is the world distance surfing record holder.
that's kind of cool. I might take a trip to England and I've been thinking of going to the Severn area, it looks awfully pretty. And the tidal bore looks really like a fun time!
Fab clip GL.A back injury means I can only enjoy this event from the bank. As for what corriebeegps says, Well, every site has more than it's share of LimpDicks and corrietosser has just increased the number here by one more!
the goatboater above seems to be a rather odd old cove.......great clip,GL, and keep up the good work..........and that includes tea by the weir, best wishes, SBoard.......................................................we'll get a rib in the end :-)
@happeHacking One wave per tide for a few days around the springtides, about 10 months of the year. Biggest ones are usually around March and September...equinox tides.
Great example of amateur filiming capturing the mood of what really is a triumph against nature. Go Phil! - He even dismissed the challenge from Hawaii by at least a mile. Who said you couldn't surf at 45!!
Thats who it was ah ah .... Thank's for the info.. I think it was Phil who was being interviewed at the SBI... That was some epic ride !!!! Folks do a Youtube search for jimmyboy1505 ... His video on here shows that ride in better quality... Big respect to both of them from me .. Dave
Great video as ever. Show's the real power of the bore. A great place to view it if not a little crowded in the water. Bring on April! As for the guy above, you wear rubber skirts!!! Enough said!
Wagner cool, but the Severn Bore? Not quite so... We tried at Overbridge and it just faded away. My advice is: you shopuld do it just to cross it off the list, then chase waves down at the coast again where they will come every thirty seconds not twice a year. P.S. Let me make clear I'm talking to yakkers here not surfers who can all go get bent. Surfing stopped being cool when the started having Surf Schools. Yakkers forever! River access for all!
how lame!

I've watched a few videos of the Severn Bore. This one is my favourite. A good bore, great surfers, and superb choice of music.
