as far as i know the christmas tree is a german "pagan" thing at all! the fir tree (hope thats right) is green all year long and its was (still is) a symbol for life (as you pointed out if i got you right). and i think the 24th of december is an old date to celebrate winter solstice (hope that word is right again) so basically the katholic church made some agreements with the old european paganic religions there. oh and the relal winter solstice is on the 21st or 22nd every year.
