I dis agree with you on The Social Network being a generational film. Although I do see your point The Social Network isn't a movie about facebook it's a movie about greed, betrayal & plagiarism it almost plays out like a courtroom drama and you can totally see that because it's written by Aaron Sorken who wrote A Few Good Men which IS a courtroom drama. Whether you use facebook or not there's a chance you may like the movie I doubted it but it was good.
@ichigokurosaki0007 I know it came out that year I never said it didn't. These guys are talking about the 2011 oscars the ones that are covering the most voted movies of 2010. You said district 9 should be in there I replied that didn't come out in 2010 so if it didn't come out in 2010 then there's a chance it came out in 2009 I think I got my facts right your the one who needs to get your facts right. They only cover 2010 movies.
Realllllllllly harsh on the fighter and christian bale, overacting? what? was daniel day lewis overacting in there will be blood? No, they are both brilliant performances
the best picture 10 weren't matched perfectly with screenplay nominations last year. the blind side and avatar missed out on screenplay nominations (in the loop and the messenger replaced them)
@ithelendl I wouldn't say Avatar had a screenplay worthy of nomination. The dialouge wasn't that great and it was a rip off of Pocahontas. I still think The Blind Side could have been nominated for that tho.
o my god. the guy in that tacky green pants is really really annoying. he is rude, he is dressed sloppily, and he sounds so unintelligent.
btw i think black swan didnt get nom for original screenplay, because the story is similar to roman polanski's repulsion. it's the same case like avatar similar to pocahontas or the last samurai.
i agree with wade, aranofsky knows how to direct natalie portman, tho i didnt like black swan that much either.. As for nolan, he isnt a bad director at all, he's pretty good, but he doesnt deserve a nomination for inception, really because there was no real character drama. it was very "blah" in that category. some interesting visuals, but there were much better films out that year.
You know what would settle this about Nolan not being nominated? Is for the academy to nominate it for The Dark Knight, yes... in the 2010 Academy Awards... just take it as it is!
They got the animated film nominee situation wrong. There's only 3 because you need 16 potential films to increase to 5. If 15 or fewer make the short list, it shrinks to 3. Only so many animated feature films are even made and have qualifying runs in the first place because they're so time consuming to do.
I'm learning so much about the nomination process from you guys.
I thought the 5/3 discrepancy with Best Animated Feature was because of a rule that says: if there are fewer than X-number of animated films released in theaters that year (15 I think), then there are 3 nominees. If there are more, then they get 5.
Wade, did you cut yourself shaving? (That HD is really something, huh?)
aronofsky's black swan seems like a type of movie that i could see nolan doing if indeed you guys say he does a character based movie. because its just thrilling enough for nolan but the characters in black swan are so well directed.
i feel like when you look at a best director nominee, you have to look at "could other directors have done this well with the film". i think social network, the fighter, and parts of true grit, could have been executed just as well with other direction. That's why my pick is Aronofsky, and Nolan should have gotten a nominee, as well as Boyle. Inception's screenplay and film were nominated...which both of those successes came because of Nolan, which is why he should have been nominated, in my op
Not really sure why they said Jesse Eisenberg wouldn't be nominated for anything again...I felt he did a fine job and if he's got depth I figure he'd do well in lots of suitable roles. I really liked The Social Network, fantastic writing. Timberlake did a great job...well I guess everyone in that film did a great job and there were no throw-away parts.
The girl in True Grit was the only remarkable performance in the movie, everyone else did their job perfectly but didn't have parts that allowed them to be remarkable. Of course her part was well written. And now I have a hankerin' for some cornbread and a shot of whiskey. I guess two others that stood out were the horse trader and the meek outlaw in the cabin.

Great discussion.
But again, I really fail to see how Nolan lacked any emotional investment in Inception.
I think both critics make Nolan colder than he actually he is; but its opinion I suppose
Can’t wait for the Oscar show
